The focus is on minimizing the time wasted, long term, over your total lifespan as an artist. Obviously, no one is even close to perfect efficiency, it's just that frame of mind that helps me the most self-learning art. I am self-taught and have no education on art, and I went to school for engineering. More specifically, my engineering discipline was broadly focused on efficiency in the context of industry, but with a mechanical engineering default background. But I went into the medical hardware megafactory side of it. Perhaps that is why I approach art with this mindset, philosophically speaking. The thing I was taught to value the most isn't efficiency, it's consistency. We are taught that it is better to be consistently inefficient than it is to be inconsistently efficient. The reasoning is you can modify the environment or process to achieve efficiency in a consistent process even if its inefficient.
