They found Volkner explaining to the residents that the man who captured Lugia was sent to jail and Lugia was safe. After a quick trip to the Pokemon Center, they stopped by the pier to check on Tom. Shinxy: Oh hey, Tom! Glad to see you and your boat are in one piece. Tom: Uh huh. The waves got stirred up real good but thankfully my vessel didn't get capsized. I saw you fly up into the sky chasing after that nut job. You helped stop him, didn't ya? Shinxy: Sure did! Tom: Heheh, man you kids are the most interesting passengers I've ever had. Anyways, I supposed now you'll be facing Volkner? Shinxy: Yep! I'll have my eigth gym badge shortly, so you can take me to the Battle Frontier soon! Tom: Well, good luck with Volkner. You're gonna need it. Crystal: Hey, I just realized... what about Altan and myself? Will we be able to go to the Battle Frontier with Shinxy, even though we don't have any badges? Tom: Of course! There's guest passes for friends/family, but you must be accompanied by someone with eight badges from a region. Shinxy: And that someone is going to be me! We'll be right back, Tom! The crew then made their way to the SunnyShore City gym. Once inside, they found Volkner waiting on his side of the arena. And to their surprise, Dreike, Terra and Adam were on the bleachers. Felix: Hey, you guys! What are you all doing here? Adam: We wanted to see Volkner in action. Terra: From what we've heard, he only challenges trainers who conquered every other gym in the region, so it should be a good match! Dreike: And, well, we wanted to see Shinxy off when he leaves for the Pokemon League. ...That was his goal, right? Altan: Actually, he's going to the Battle Frontier to see his mom. But, you're welcome to see us off for that too. Shinxy: Heheh, wow, I've never had an audience this big before... Crystal: We'll all be cheering you on, so kick some butt for us! Altan, Crystal, Felix and Mewtwo went to sit on the bleachers with Dreike, Terra and Adam. Shinxy meanwhile took his stand on the trainers' side of the battlefield. Volkner: You've got some good friends there, Shinxy. Shinxy: Thanks, Volkner! And sorry to keep you waiting. Volkner: It's no problem. I just hope this battle will be exciting enough to have been worth the wait. Shinxy: I guess we'll see! Volkner and Shinxy tossed out their pokemon at once. Volkner released his Jolteon and Shinxy his Rhydon. Terra: Wow, those pokemon both look strong... Altan: It's not like Shinxy to be sending out his more effective pokemon from the start... but he does have two ground type pokemon. Mewtwo: His journey up until now has certainly prepared him for this moment, yes. Volkner commanded his Jolteon to use Iron Tail. The quick and nimble yellow canine struck Rhydon directly with it's fierce steel attack. Sinxy then ordered his Rhydon to use Bulldoze, a move he had not previously revealed Rhdyon to have. Rhydon shook the ground struck Jolteon a heavy blow in return. Terra: Woah, what was that attack? Dreike: Bulldoze is an attack similar to Earthquake. It's not as powerful, but any pokemon hit by it get slowed down. It's especially useful against a pokemon like Jolteon. With Jolteon's speed reduced, Shinxy then commanded his Rhydon to use Drill Run. The attack was able to land successfully and knock out Volkner's first pokemon. Volkner returned Jolteon to it's pokeball. Volkner: Hmmm, not bad. I admit I don't have a lot of counter measures for a pokemon like Rhydon. Of course, the few I do have are very effective. Volkner sent out his Raichu onto the field. Terra: Aaaww, it's cute! I'm so glad we stopped by to watch this! Volkner commanded his Raichu to use Focus Blast. Raichu formed a large orb of energy and hurled it at Rhydon. The attack was slow, but Rhydon was as well, on top of being a rather big target. Rhydon was struck by the attack directly and fainted as a result. Shinxy returned Rhydon to it's pokeball. Shinxy: Wow, I haven't seen that attack before! Volkner: Focus Blast is a special fighting type attack. Rhydon's a rock type pokemon and it's special defense isn't very great, so Focus Blast is a perfect counter. Shinxy sent his Mew out to fight next. Mew floated over it's side of the battlefield and stared down Volkner's Raichu. Volkner: How interesting... Let's see if that Mew is as strong as it is rare. Shinxy: Let's do this, Mew! Shinxy commanded his Mew to use Psybeam. At the same time, Raichu used Signal Beam. Both attacks collided with eachother in a powerful display, though with Signal Beam's type advantage, Raichu was able to overpower Mew and Signal Beam landed a direct hit. Unfortunately for Shinxy, Mew became confused by Raichu's attack. Volkner took advantage of the situation and commanded Raichu to use Charge Beam. With Mew confused, the attack had no trouble making direct contact and striking down Mew. Mew fainted and Raichu's special attack was raised by Charge Beam's secondary effect. Shinxy returned Mew to it's pokeball. Crystal: Oh no... that Raichu downed two of Shinxy's pokemon, and it's not even Volkner's ace... Adam: It seems it's true, that Volkner is the strongest gym leader in the Sinnoh region... what will Shinxy do now, I wonder? Shinxy released his Serperior onto the battlefield next. Volkner: Odd, you choose to send out another pokemon weak to Signal Beam? Shinxy: Don't doubt my Serperior's speed and power. We'll show you! Volkner commanded Raichu to use Signal Beam once again. Seperior's nimble snake body was able to dodge the attack as it closed in for a quick and powerful Leaf Blade. With a decisive strike, Serperior hit Raichu with a powerful Leaf Blade, taking down Raichu in a single hit. Volkner returned Raichu to it's pokeball. Altan: Hahah, nice! A critical hit! Dreike: Moves with a high critical hit chance like Leaf Blade can really turn a battle to one's favor. Volkner: I gotta say, you're doing pretty well! But you've only taken down half of my team. And each pokemon I use is stronger than the last. So be prepared, Shinxy.
