After getting dressed, they set out to the Canalave City Gym, where Shinxy was fixing to win his 6th gym badge. Upon entering the building, a tall and rugged figure was waiting. ???: Ah, welcome! The name's Byron, I'm the leader of this gym. I don't suppose all three of you kids are looking to challenge me? Shinxy: No, just me, sir! These are my friends, Altan and Crystal, and I'm Shinxy! Altan: You look kind of familiar. Have we seen you somewhere before? Byron: I would hope so, seeing as my steel type pokemon are much stronger than my son, Roark's rock types. Crystal: Wow, you're Roark's dad? Byron: That I am! Shinxy: Roark was the first gym leader I beat. He's a pretty nice guy! I'll have to stop by Oreburgh sometime and tell him all about how I defeated his dad too! Byron: Hahahah! I like your confidence. Hopefully your pokemon have the strength to back it up. When you're ready, step onto the edge of the battlefield! Altan, Crystal and Mewtwo headed to the bench and Shinxy stepped forward to battle Byron. Byron released Magneton onto the battlefield, and Shinxy led with Arcanine. Upon starting the match, Arcanine swiftly took down Magneton with a single Flame Wheel. After recalling Magneton to it's pokeball, Byron sent forth his Steelix. The massive pokemon towered over Arcanine and reminded Shinxy of his battle with Crasher Wake's Gyarados. Byron: Heheheh, I'm glad you came prepared with a fire type! But this is where things get much more difficult. Altan: You've got to be kidding... That pokemon is huge! Crystal: It's even bigger than Gyarados! Mewtwo: It is still a steel type. Shinxy has the advantage. Shinxy: O-Okay... A bigger pokemon just makes a bigger target! Arcanine, go for another Flame Wheel! Arcanine huffed affirmatively, and charged at the giant steel pokemon in a cloak of fire. Arcanine's attack made a direct hit, however, Steelix appeared to be unshaken by the attack. Byron then commanded Steelix to use Earthquake. The intensely powerful ground type attack defeated Arcanine instantly. Shinxy: But- But how?! Arcanine definitely hit Steelix with his Flame Wheel! Byron: You don't seem to grasp how sturdy my pokemon are. Can you break through our ultimate defense, young trainer? Shinxy: Of course we can, just watch! Shinxy returned Arcanine to it's pokeball, and sent out his Serperior. Shinxy: Steelix is also a ground type, so grass attacks should be somewhat effective too! Byron: You aren't wrong about that, but they gotta be strong enough too! Shinxy commanded Serperior to use Leaf Blade, and the large snake slithered quickly and slashed Steelix directly. Byron had properly prepared Steelix for battle with grass type pokemon, however. Byron commanded Steelix to use Ice Fang, and the giant steel snake pokemon chomped down on Serperior with it's huge mouth with chilled teeth, causing Serperior to faint. Crystal: It knows Ice Fang, just like Crasher Wake's Floatzel! Altan: But unlike Floatzel, it only took one to K.O Shinxy's Serperior. Mewtwo: It has incredible defense, and quite the attack power to match. I wonder how Shinxy will climb this wall? Shinxy returned Serperior to it's pokeball, and sent out his Quagsire next. Shinxy: Man, Steelix is much tougher than your Magneton, like waaaayyy tougher. Byron: I hope you're not giving up already. Shinxy: Not a chance! Byron: Hahah, that's just what I wanted to hear! Shinxy: Arcanine and Serperior did a great job at chipping away Steelix's health, now it's time to take it down! Quagsire, use Brine! Quagsire fired the heavy wave of water from it's mouth. Thanks to Steelix being weakened, Brine's power was boosted well enough to bring the massive pokemon crashing down. The large, heavy iron snake shook the ground as it made impact. Byron laughed and returned Steelix to it's pokeball. Altan: He's in a pretty good mood after losing such a heavy hitter. Crystal: Maybe he likes the challenge? Byron: Well done, young man! I wasn't expecting your pokemon to be hiding a move like Brine. And Steelix's special defence isn't near as good as it's physical defense. Shinxy: I have Crasher Wake to thank for the technical machine! I taught it to Quagsire and it's definitely come in handy. Byron: I would imagine so!
