Thoughts of every future winter on Waikiki danced in my head. The next\nthing that happened deflated that fantasy faster than a gummi bear in a microwave.\n\nYou see, my mate isn't exactly human.\n\nAnd here, in the crystal solitude of the mountains, he began to revert into his\ntrue form.\n\nOff came the backpack. Off came the cargo shorts. He yanked off his undies and\ntossed them on the ground like a forgotten candy wrapper. My mind danced with the\nchanges he began, much like that first night years ago when I thought we were rich.\n\nHis jaw always extended first. Then the ears. Then the fur. His muzzle grew along\nwith the rest of his canine form.\n\nIt took some time to get used to. But here, now, in the elevated landscape, I was\nglad he felt comfortable enough to shed his humanity.\n\nWe sat across from each other in the invigorating waters of the stream, eyes locked\nin rapt attention to each other.\n\nMy mate.\n\nMy dog.\n\nMy love.",
