It had been way too quiet recently and he was worried there were dark things being planned. But that was the risk he and the others ran everyday. At the moment it was calm so why not enjoy it. Zipping over the grass he stopped at the edge of a cliff and peered into the valley below. Miles of green stretched for what seemed to be forever, the air cool yet slightly warm making for a perfect day. \"Ah well, nice day at least.\"\n\nRodney peered out of the forest. It was a wonderful day for a walk, something to take his mind off his work. He stood at the base of the cliff. It always fascinated him, the strange checkerboard patterns in the rock. He wondered what could cause them. It seemed so... unnatural. He looked up the cliff, as he thought he heard something. \"That's strange, this area is always deserted.\" \"Wait, I think I see someone up there!\"\n\nSonic looked down, seeing a dot down below. \"Hmm... someone's out there?\" he said to no one. As far as he knew, there was no one living near the area so while it was strange to see someone else, he decided to investigate. \"Might as well say hi.\" Zipping back and down to the valley he saw the wolf just admiring the rocks. 'I don’t think Robotnik would send anyone out here. Too clever of him.' \n\"Heyooo.\" Sonic waved, walking up to him.\n\nRodney was taken aback. He'd heard stories about sonic, but never thought he would actually meet him. \"Wow, S-s-... Sonic! I never thought I'd actually meet you! I've looked up to you so much, and, well, thank you for keeping us safe!\" Rodney blushed a little, worried the hedgehog might reject him.\n\"What brings you out to the middle of nowhere?\" Rodney asked\n\n\"Easy there.\" he laughed. \"I go through here a lot, making sure it's safe and everything's good. I should be asking you what you're doing out here. I've only seen Mobians out here... well never.\"\n\n\"Well, its these rocks. Ever since I was a little pup, and I wandered out here one day, I wondered what caused those patterns. Nobody could explain it to me, and sometimes the even told me off for asking. I've wondered if they are fake, but you can see the crystals in them, and the imperfections. Nowadays, when I ca't deal with all the hustle-bustle, or if I get too stressed, I walk out here, and I ponder the rocks, Its strangely calming, but it makes me think.\" Rodney replied\n\n\"Ah. From what we found it's natural, but we don't know.\" Sonic said. Running a gloved hand along the wall face, it was quite beautiful. \"I don't blame you for coming out here. It is nice to get away from everything.\n\n\"Is that what brought you out here as well?\" Rodney questioned, \"or are you on the run again from more robots?\"\n\n\"Oh no, I've been doing patrols out here for years.\" he said, leaning up against the wall face. \"Guess we've just never ran across each other until now.\"\n\n\"Patrols? You really think Eggman would ruin a place like this? I have to imagine he needs some place to go too... But you never know with someone who just wants to 'Take over the world!!!' Rodney looked back towards the trees, and saw a green Flicky. \"Wow, I thought those were rare around these parts, do you think they are migrating, Sonic?\"\n\n\"Of course he would. Just to cause me trouble.\" he laughed, catching the Flicky flying off. \"Possibly. But the green ones are rare. I know the blues are starting too. Green must be passing through, if they are here they're can't be many left. They're usually in the south by now.\"\n\n\"Yeah, I heard the green ones fly away from everyone, I guess they don't want to be seen ripping off Knuckle's hair style,\" Rodney chuckled. \"How is Knuckles anyway, I haven't heard much about him around town for a few months!\"\n\n\"He stays up on the island. We even put in a security system for the emerald but he refuses to leave unless he has to.\" he shook his head and shrugged. \"I keep telling him he needs to come down more but you can't budge him for anything.\"\n\n\"Not even Rouge can get him to come down? I thought he would do anything for her. Or at least, that’s what she said....\" Rodney looked up into the clouds, searching for the floating island. \"Can you even see the island at this time of day?\" Rodney questioned\n\n\"You gotta be on the other side of the cliff.\" he said. \"It's rare. Unless we need him he doesn't. We did get him down for a party once. That was nice.\"\n\n\"Oh really? Was that your 20th anniversary? How awful of Eggman to crash that party, and to bring Robotnick from the past to crash it too! Maybe that’s why he doesn't come down much any more...\"\n\n\"Tails was there too, right? And Amy... I heard you somehow were able to keep Amy off of you with just your hand, for once! That's impressive, I guess she forgot her hammer\" Rodney laughed.\n\n\"Yeah. That was a... confusing time to say the least.\" He shook his head. \"Well she had it but no time to pull it out. Wanna walk with me?\"\n\n\"Of course. I'm not nearly as fast as you though, so don't leave me in the dust! Which way, to Green Hill, or Windy Valley?\" Rodney asked\n\n\"Valley. And don't worry. I can walk.\" They headed off, the wind blowing lightly, scarf around his neck catching it some. \"You live close by?\"\n\n\"Well, sort of. I'm off on a month-long break in the mystic ruins, but I normally live in Station Square. I'm currently at Amadeus University. I'm studying music and engineering actually.\"\n\n\"Nice. You'd get along with Tails just fine then. Might be able to understand most of his technobabble.\" he laughed again, ducking a tree branch. \"Don't get me wrong, he's cool but sometimes I nod my head and go 'uh-huh.' \"\n\nRodney slightly lifted the tree branch as he ducked under it, disturbing a Blue Flicky. \"Oh yeah, I totally understand that, It happens to me sometimes in physics class. How is Tails, by the way? Does he still like to join you for adventures?\" Rodney asked\n\"Huh, there's another one\" Rodney noted.\n\n\"I guess they haven't all migrated after all.\" Sonic said, taking a deep breath of the fresh air. \"He's always ready but lately with it quiet he's been in his lab a lot. Its changed from last time I visited\" Rodney remarked\n\n\"Boy, is it just me or is it really calm today?\" he said. For Windy Valley it was more like Breezy Valley. The wind blew but much calmer and gentler than he was used to. \"Probably a low pressure system moved in.\"\n\n\"Seems like it. That might be why the birds are still here, its not really fall yet. Do you come here often, Sonic?\"\n\n\"Not usually. It's canyons so I avoid them unless there's already trouble brewing. But I'll admit, it's nice.\"\n\n\"Tails's house is that way, right? Do you think I could finally meet him?\" Rodney asked\n\n\"Yeah, we just cut through here. Shouldn't be more than a 10 minute walk. But first I need to go. Don't mind me, just trying to fix the flaps on the Tornado.\" He took his gloves off and set them on a table. \"Hey, I'm Tails.\" he said, extending his hand to Rodney.\n\n\"Hey Tails, I'm Rodney, nice to finally meet you! I've heard so much about your inventions, studying at Amadeus University, and, well, I've looked up to your mechanical skill about as much as I've looked up to Sonic's heroism. You're pretty smart for an 18 year old, to design a plane like this!\"\n\nHe was taken aback a bit by his enthusiasm but nodded. \"Thanks. But I was actually 15 when I came up with the design for it. I've only recently perfected it. Swapping out the old sheet metal for titanium and aluminum. Right now I'm trying to get the flaps replaced. It's a carbon fiber wing, just need to get it on there and she'll be done.\"\n\n\"Oh wow! We were doing carbon fiber layups in school last week! I still don't quite understand how the composites work, but it definitely looks beautiful! Sorry, I just never thought I would actually meet you and Sonic, let alone in the same day!\" Rodney said. \"Need any help attaching it?\" Rodney asked\n\n\"Oh no, it's fine. I do it myself so in case anything breaks it's my fault. I had to put that rule in cause Knuckles accidentally ripped a hole in the fuselage awhile back trying to kill a fly.
