She has a black patch of fur that looks like an inverted heart centered in the small of her back. 9 years old in this story. She is in the 4th grade. *Kalvin Bane - Calista's father. A book binder and print-shop owner. *Marry Bane - Calista's mother. A home-maker and church deacon. *Oakley Sage - A thirty year old heavy boned clydesdale with rich red-brown body fur, and a black mane, tail, feathers, and headfur. He is a shade-tree mechanic and a classic car hobbyist. His mane source of income is from a family trust, but this does not make him rich or particularly well off but is enough when combined with his earnings from his work on rebuilding engines. *Aubrey Sells - A ten year old richly brown furred pine martin with black "glove and sock" fur markings and very long blonde headfur down to her waist. She is the mayor's daughter and her uncle is the local county sheriff. She is well known to be the town's junior miss harvest queen and attends several beauty pageants throughout the state. Her mother is already looking into breast implants for her. She isn't a very nice girl in reality despite her often well performed nice-girl act she puts on around adults. Her mother keeps her bottled up and she tends to take it out on other less-popular girls. She is in the 4th grade after spending a year "abroad" vacationing with her family in Europe on another pageant tour when she was in the second grade, between that and the pageant circuit in the states she has fallen one grade behind. *The Rabble - A group of four other girls of various types who hang out with Aubrey. They're secretly jealous of Aubrey but are willing to do anything she says to stay "in" her inner circle. They consist of a fawn (Bellany), a young vixen cub (Rachel), a cream colored ewe (Livey), and a chowchow girl pup (Sissy). [Refuge from the Rabble] "Get her!" one of them yelled just before the large clods of dirt began to fly as the Rabble began digging chunks of grass and earth from the edge of the roadside ditch. It had rained recently and the chunks of grass and earth were just perfect for ammunition as they let fly. The heavy mud-bombs pelting their target about the head, shoulders and somehow finding that gap between her backpack and her shoulders slipping down past her shirt collar making the insult of it all that much worse. The "Rabble" were set on Cali by Aubrey, who of course wasn't present as she lets others do her dirty work for her. Cali wasn't sure exactly why Aubrey was so set on making her life miserable, but it probably had to be from that time earlier in the year on Picture-Day when she showed up wearing the exact same dress as the other girl, but with a stylish black lace ribbon choker with a silver heart charm, meaning that it looked that much better somehow, and insulted the other girl so much that it was "on" from that point forward. First thing on that day, Aubrey cornered Cali in the girl's bathroom just after recess and demanded the girl go home and change her outfit. Then when Cali refused, Aubrey reached out and tried to tear the other girl's dress but Cali got lucky and just barely twisted out of reach just in time just as a teacher stepped in checking to see if anyone was smoking or vaping. There was an awkward moment of "nothing" replies from all the girls when asked what was going on. Meanwhile Cali slipped away, and the day had become immortalized in the yearbook with her unintentionally upstaging Aubrey by having a name that comes sooner in the alphabet so that her picture appeared first. If Cali knew how much grief that would call down upon her she would have just gone home and changed clothes just as Aubrey had asked. From that point on, Aubrey and her Rabble had singled her out for special attention. Bumps and shoves in the hallway before class, sudden legs stuck out as she rounded corners on the way back from recess. There was that time they put this big leggy bug in her sandwich and laughed as she reacted to almost biting into the thing. Gum appearing in her hair when she wasn't watching close enough, or paying attention to the fact that one of the Rabble had sat behind her that day in class. On and on it went. Cali tried to get the adults at the school involved. Especially after the time they beat her up on the playground where others saw the tail end of the incident, when Cali herself finally stood up for herself and took a swing at Aubrey giving the girl a solid slap across the face. As it turned out, fate just wasn't going to side with her. Calista somehow got all of the blame for the fight, it was five girl's statements and one adult witness' word against hers. Her parents were called in, and Aubrey's father... who turned out to be the Mayor of all things! Not only that but the Deputy that served as the school resource officer worked for the girl's Uncle, and he was the one that witnessed that final slap. Cali's mother completely took their side! She had become convinced that it was Cali's fault and that she was the one causing all the trouble. Nothing she said was accepted and instead her mother said, "STOP YOUR LYING! Rememberm I hold an important position at the church, they elected me to serve as Deacon. This might threaten all of that! You will stop this mess, and you will behave young lady!" It just went downhill from there. There were apologies and in-school suspension and hours of extra punishment work piled on by her teacher. Meanwhile Aubrey and her Rabble got away with everything! The worst injustice of it all was that despite everything, it all continued as the girls kept up their campaign. Cali just... gave up. She ducked down her head and tried to avoid the girls as much as possible. Hanging out in safe zones on the playground during recess where the teachers on duty could clearly see her. Volunteering to stay late at school to help clean the room so that the bullies would just go home instead of waiting for her. Things like that. Still it didn't always work. Today, a Friday, the Rabble had ridden their bikes ahead of Cali and set up an ambush at the end of her street. As soon as she heard the shout of "Get her!" she tried to run, but she couldn't outrun the clods of earth launched at her, and she half tripped as one of the girls got clever and included a large rock in the pack of missiles launched at her, glancing her on the side of the head. She still tried to run, stumbling dizzily and falling right into a deep roadside ditch filled with soft mud from the morning rain. The Rabble began to laugh uproariously and they ran to shove her back down into the ditch near the culvert that separated the ditch from the driveway of the home she was in front of. After being kicked over once, Cali made the mistake of trying to throw mud back at the girls but that just gave them the excuse to be even more mean as one of them yelled, "Make the pig eat her mud pies!" All of this, however, was interrupted by another voice. "Hey! You there, stop that!" It was unexpectedly loud, almost baritone, masculine, and definitely that of an adult. "Busted! Book it!" one of the other girls cried out and the Rabble scattered in all directions and were soon out of sight. Cali sat up in the ditch, pondering a moment as she sat there in the mud before she just... gave up and sat there breathing hard and holding her paw to the side of her head where a large goose egg was starting to form painfully. Footsteps could be heard approaching, "Woah, and I thought boys could be bad." he mutters shaking his head. He steps atop the edge of the small culvert pipe that protects his driveway and reaches his large hoofpaw down to the little girl covered head to toe in mud. "Take my paw, lets get you out of there." he says closing his thick nailed fingers around the tiny lop's paw and pulling her up to her unsteady feet. "Careful there, don't fall over... let me help." She couldn't help it. The contrast of events between being outright attacked and then calmly helped was just too much for the little girl. Tears began to well up, and then the sniffles came. She didn't break out into a bawl but she wanted to, but she didn't want to look like a baby in front of her friendly neighbor. "J... just help me get home." she said her voice half whine, and then she nearly tipped right over dizzily. "Oh, no, none of that. We're going inside my place and getting you cleaned up first... and maybe an ambulance." Oakley says catching the girl before she can fall over again. Cali's tears dried up instantly as a wave of fear shocked right through her. "No no! I don't need it. Please, don't turn this into a big deal. My mom hates it when I make trouble for her!" Oakley frowns then he remembers this girl's mother is the Deacon of the local church and this could cause trouble in the community and make the situation worse. Still, there are priorities. "Okay, we'll just go inside and get you cleaned up first. I won't call an ambulance but you might have a concussion so you have to show me you're okay by keeping me company and staying awake for a while." he says. Cali nods, "My dad is out of town, and my mom was supposed to join him today. I was supposed to be home by myself overnight." she says. "But I have a phone number I can call if I have to," she says, "But I would rather not." Oakley mmmns at that, "Are you old enough to be home alone?" he asks. The girl frowns, "I'm almost ten!" she grumps as he walks her to the back of his house where he can use the hose to get some off the mud off her. "Okay, okay, you're old enough. No offense. Well... I see. Lets get the worst off you. Then inside. We'll get you washed up and your things in the laundry right away before they get stained by the mud." he says. Cali just stands there and puts out a paw to steady herself against the corner of his house. She barely braces herself before the cold water gently hits her as he starts at her feet and works his way up and making sure to carefully open her bookbag and take everything out and set aside before he washes the mud off of it too. "Okay, that's enough for the moment. You're shivering. Lets get you inside and in the tub." Oakley says, "I will get that number from you and talk with your parents." He holds up his hoofpaw before the girl opens her mouth to object. "No," he says firmly, "no argument. You'll do as you're told here. I am going to just let them know you are with me and safe, and that you had a small accident. I won't mention the bullies and I will downplay any fuss. Okay?" Now feeling her mood swing back towards sullen, Cali nods frowning. "Okaaaay." she says reluctantly. She tells him the number to unlock the flip phone her parents gave her for emergency use that was buried deeply in her bookbag fortunately it wasn't broken or got soaked in all the recent events. She digs in her bag and hands over the small phone. He nods and gives her a reassuring smile as he pockets it for the moment. He opens his kitchen door for her and gestures for her to go inside. "But I'm still dripping..." she says worried she'll make a mess in his home. "I can just go home..." again Oakley holds up his hoofpaw and the gestures again, "Don't you fret about any of that. Just get inside where we can get you warmed up and clean." She steps inside still shivering and steps into his kitchen. Like the rest of his house his kitchen is nearly spotless other than those little tell tale things that are a part of being a home that is actually lived in. Everything is organized and in its place. Cali takes it in and never would have thought anyone was more of a neat freak than her own mother but here it was. Now she feels even worse about the little bits of mud and water she is leaving in her wake. Oakley shows her the way through to a short hallway linking the kitchen to the front livingroom and another longer hallway leading to the rest of his house. He walks with her to the door to a pretty little bathroom that is all white tile, chrome mirrors, and decorated with several hanging plants, including one very healthy looking fern that is practically overflowing from its pot, kept just up and out of the way by hooks and little chains connected to the ceiling. There are two doors that lead into the bathroom, one from the hall, and another that is currently closed but leads to the master bedroom. "Here we go." Oakley says as he walks over and begins running water in the tub. "Now just get yourself undressed, set your clothes in the hall outside so I can get them in the washer and dryer. Don't worry I won't peek. Just you relax and take a good long soak. If you need to drain the water to get rid of the mud, go ahead. Towels and such are in that little closet there next to the tub. Use one of the smaller ones if you need to clear the mud from the bottom of the tub first." he says pulling the small lever that operates the tub's stopper letting it fill now that the water is running warm enough. Oakley looks at the little girl. "Now this is very important. Even if you feel sleepy, don't let yourself fall asleep. If you start to feel nauseous you call out for me right away. I don't care if you're naked or not. It means you may be very sick and could die if we don't get you help. Understand?" Cali nods slowly feeling just a little bit nonplussed at what he said. He gives Cali a smile, "So far you're just a bit dizzy and you have just a bit of a goose-egg there on the side of your head, but we gotta be careful, okay?" Cali nods and looks around and despite feeling a bit nervous about taking a bath in a strange house, she's just been overwhelmed how nice and caring her neighbor has been to her. His concern for her health seems very genuine, and she sees him almost in a new light. He's been living here for as long as she can remember and he's always been friendly when he's seen her or her family in the neighborhood or at the church on Sundays. Now... well he's turning out to be something of a knight in shining armor. Oakley excuses himself and leaves her to her own devices. She sticks her pawfingers into the rising warm water in the tub and it feels wonderful! Especially after getting so chilled after practically being hosed down. Quickly she begins to peel off and shed her clothes. Now naked she gathers the sodden things together in a pile and even puts her sneakers on top. She goes to the door and cracks it open just enough so that she can peer outside to the hallway to make sure he's not there and she sets them on the floor just outside. "You can get my things!" she calls out and there is a distant, "Okay, be right there." from somewhere up the hall. Cali quickly closes the bathroom door and spotting a little push button in the handle she presses it locking the door. Feeling more secure she turns and gets into the bath tub and she practically groans in pleasure at how good it feels to be warm again. -- Almost an hour, and one tub refill, later Cali feels refreshed and almost completely back to herself again. The goose-egg is still a bit sore, but it seems to be going down and the dizziness is completely gone. There was no sign of nausea or anything that would be worrisome. Instead there is a pleasant languid feeling of being clean and relaxed. Relaxed until she realized suddenly. She doesn't have any clothes! Opening the towel closet and the cabinets around the bathroom, Calista searched to see if she somehow missed a bathrobe or something that Mr.Sage wanted her to wear, but there was nothing. She even poked her head out the bathroom door to see if there was something left for her out in the hall, but again, nothing! Trying not to panic at her situation she turned about and noticed that some of the towels were quite large. Grabbing one and draping it over her shoulder and down her front she gets another and uses one paw to hold it at her hip. Gathering her wits she then tentatively stepped out into the hallway calling out, "Mister Sage? It's me, Calista?" It wasn't until she was almost to the livingroom did she hear voices. "Yes ma'am. She's fine." Oakley's voice can be heard. Then she heard her mother's faint voice, "Well I don't want her causing you any trouble..." "Naw, naw. No trouble at all, Deacon Bane. She just got messed up by those girls and..." Marry Bane interrupts him. "Yes, I heard you telling my husband. We have been through all of this before. My girl for some reason has been picking fights with these girls and this kind of acting out... well we had a long talk at the school about it. I am at my wits end as to why she insists..." Oakley clears his throat and takes his turn at interrupting, "Now hold on, Ma'am, this time I saw it all. Those girls ambushed her, threw rocks and mud at her and were about to do some real damage before I stepped in. Now she's okay for now, but I think..." Again Marry speaks up, "I beg you Mister Sage, but you do not know my daughter as well as I do. She is at war with that Sells girl for what reason is beyond me, but she is STUBBORN as hell about it! We will deal with this when we get back in a few hours." "Oh no!" Cali mouths to herself, "This is so unfair!" A whole weekend by herself doing nothing but playing video games by herself ruined! Plus the hammer about to come down from her mother! Oakley realizes that he just got the girl into some sort of trouble and that her parents were going to cut their trip short to sort it out. "Wait a minute, Deacon, Ma'am... I don't think that's necessary. The group of girls ran off, and that Sells girl, she wasn't anywhere to be seen. Maybe it was in retaliation from the previous stuff, as you said. But it is over now. There's no need to cut your trip short." Marry mmmns, and then she can be heard talking in the background with Cali's father. "Mister Sage, could we possibly impose on you for a favor? Could you keep our daughter at your place until Sunday evening? Evidently she is still too young to be left on her own and..." Oakley smiles and chuckles a bit, "She's fine... but certainly. I owe you a favor with that home-owner's association thing about the car parts in my back yard. So it would be my pleasure to have her company for a couple days." A few more minutes of conversation goes by before he presses the hang-up button on the tiny flip-phone and closes it. He turns and smiles at Cali who has been standing there listening in. Apparently he had spotted her reflection in the tv which is currently turned off. He then sees how the girl is awkwardly holding the towels to her small frame. He lets out an "Oh! I didn't even think of that. Sorry. Did you hear, your folks want you to stay over here with me. I have an empty guest room you can use... or you can sneak on back home as soon as your clothes are out of the drier. Your shoes will have to dry in the sun I am afraid. Unless you want me to bake them or something." Cali blinks as she sees Mr.Sage get up and step close to her. "Um, okay... I can stay here. I guess. But I will want some things from home first. Um..." she blushes shifting her weight from one foot to the other. "Mr.Sage..." Oakley grins, "Please, Calista, call me Oakley. Okay? Now hasn't anyone ever taught you how to wear a towel?" he reaches and without a pause takes a hold of the edges of the towel where the girl was holding it closed, "See you flatten one end out around you like so." The girl lets out a little eep as he takes an unexpected liberty. "Then you take the other end and fold it over like so..." he says tugging it snugly and folding it in such a way as it holds itself in place. He steps back and the girl starts to grip at the towel again in a panic fearing it would fall down but instead it stays in place quite nicely. "Now, be careful when you walk around it may slip if the tension isn't just right." Cali nods, "T... thanks." she says blushing. The fact that her mother is going to lay into her when she gets home having fled her mind completely now. Maybe it won't be so bad staying here, she thinks. She feels herself blushing even redder, and there is a bit of a strange feeling... it comes and goes sometimes but lately it's been sooo embarrassing. Oakley, "Well my drier is one of those super high efficiency ones, so it is going to take forever for your things to dry. In the mean time how about we watch some tv. I'll order us a pizza. How does that sound?" Cali's face brightens and she looks up, "Pizza? For real! Can I have pineapple on it?" Oakley makes a face, "Um, in some states you'd be lynched for that blasphemy... but tell you what, you can have it on half. My half will have veggies." He lets out half a laugh as the girl makes a face. Ah youth! The girl hasn't hit the dieting age yet where it is salads and morning jogs forever. Cali makes an "um" sound and she twirls her pawfingers. "Huh?" Oakley quirks then "Oh!" He then ahs and turns his back a moment while the girl fixes the towel draped over her front so that it is tucked in almost the same way as the one securely at her hip. She then wanders past the clydesdale and settles in on his couch making sure to tuck the hem of the towel down between her legs. Oakley smiles and takes a spot on a large laz-e-fur chair next to the large couch he then leans forward and passes the tv's remote to the girl before he picks up his own phone and uses an app for a pizza delivery. -- After the pizza arrived and two small bottles of soda later. Cali has now become absorbed in the movie she selected to watch on the television and she's become much more relaxed. She's even swung her feet up sitting sideways on the couch as she eats her last slice of pizza saving a bit of pineapple to go with the chewy crust. As the movie plays out the heroine protagonist begins to flirt with the detective while they talk about how someone could be both dead and alive at the same time. The lady casually uncrosses her legs, and with a finger she draws up the edge of her already short skirt a little giving the detective a view of her panties. Cali giggles at the scene and wonders if that ever really works in real life. Still the woman on the screen seems to have the detective wrapped all around her finger. A thought occurs to Cali and she giggles again earning her a quizzical look from Oakley. "What's funny?" He asks. Cali just shakes her head, "Oh nothing. Those two are just acting so weird." Oakley mmns, "Well maybe this movie is a bit mature for you. Want me to find something else for you?" Cali shakes her head vehemently, "No! My mom almost never lets me watch stuff that's rated R. I don't want to ruin it." Oakley smirks and shrugs, "Okay." After that the characters end up in bed together. The scene making Cali blush as she watches them kiss passionately and things happen just out of view of the camera. She has a fair idea of what they are doing from the health lecture at school and of course the internet filters her parents use aren't perfect. Still she cant take her eyes off the screen as she decides to try something. As she relaxes there on the couch still wearing just the towels she slowly inches her legs apart just a bit, and tries that trick with her finger, making the hem of the towel ride up just a bit. She knows she's not got any panties on but... she is curious now how Oakley will react. If anything giving him a little peek as a reward for saving her should be rewarded somehow. Plus maybe he can keep her mother from going ballistic when she gets home. That weird feeling returned as she moves, but she tries to ignore it along with the wave of nervousness that suddenly tries to out-do the mischievousness of what she is attempting. She suddenly wonders if maybe he'll get angry or maybe it will get her in trouble somehow. She looked up and there he was, staring at her. Though as soon as he sees her looking he tears his eyes away and stares at the television screen. HE SAW IT AND SAID NOTHING! Eeek! [Editing/Writing in Progress. To be updated and continued!]
