It traditionally housed college students, but has since (due to it being located in a somewhat rural area far from any nearby campuses) picked up longer term tenants living in a slightly communal style sharing the first floor kitchen and social spaces. The house itself was built in a Victorian Gothic style.\n\n*Cinder Nash (Nash) -- A 15 year old jerboa who lives in a rented room on the second floor with his single mother. He has green eyes, light brown patches of fur splotting randomly over his back and thighs. And white fur dominating his fur color everywhere else, including his head and front except for one brown left ear, and chestnut headfur. \n\n*Aylee Sun (Lee) -- A ten year old stoat. She has tawny brown and white fur, and long white headfur that comes down and hides part of her face. She has soft brown eyes hidden behind small wire-frame glasses. She is visiting Baxter Hall as a guest attending a \"Haunted House\" event that the residents have put on turning the first story of the Manor House into a spooky haunted house.\n\n*Baxter Hall Residents -- Nine other residents who live there, most of whom are in their early 20s, but there is one elderly couple, two women in their early 30s, and Nash's mother (Clara) who is a middle-aged widow and single mother.\n\n====( Okay! Okay! Just get on with the story! )====\n\"A 'Fright' to Remember!\" a Beyond the Veil story by R.Blue\n\nIt was sort of a long honored tradition started probably somewhere in the 1950's when the Manor House was occupied by mostly students who attended a now closed college. Every year on Halloween the first floor would be divided off with cardboard and carefully hung draperies to create a sort of maze that featured different spooky rooms with different scary themes. It would be manned by the residents and their friends. All of them costumed up to play in a matching role for each room. While others donned monster costumes better suited for jump scares and wandered or lurked about in among the turns and blind alleys of the haunted house expose.\n\nOne room, usually the dining room, would be set up as a social space with coolers filled with soda and plastic cups filled with green tinted punch. If you made it there you were treated to a small gift bag with candy and other little goodies like plastic spiders and rubber snakes to toss at your friends.\n\nThis is the second time that Nash got to participate in setting everything up, picking out his costume, and helping out. The proceeds for it went half to charities (usually a local food bank or woman's shelter) and half went to paying for the event the following year. Plus there was a jar for anyone who wanted to add a little more money for the charity pile. Last year, Nash got to play as a zombie where he would pop out of a pine box coffin in room made up to look like a mausoleum. \n\nThis year he had a \"big hairy fanged monster\" costume that was something between a sabre toothed cat and a shaggy monster wolf thing with a bare toothy skull with horns all made of bone-like plastic that had a working jaw and glowing red lights in its eye sockets.... though he had to usually turn those off cause he couldn't see past it. There were patches of shaggy fur matching the body part of the costume as if it were some kind of half zombie half demon thing.\n\nHis mother went all out buying it for him a few weeks ago on his birthday and he was real happy with it. Even when it wasn't being worn as a costume it would look great decorating the wall of his room like some cryptozoologist's hunting trophy. He planned on splaying it out on his wall complete with the furred body and the long arms and feet that had large clawed hands that were articulated with the gloves from the inside.\n\nToday though he was also a \"runabout\", or at least that was what they were calling anyone that filled the free-roaming hosts who were there to guide guests in or out, or could set up an ambush spot leaping out from one of the curtained walls in random places inside the maze-like corridors they had set up. Doing the jump scares was going to be great! \n\nIt was one of the best host positions, and at least he wouldn't be confined to sitting up suddenly from inside a box. This year they dressed up a dummy to do that, operated by a rope pull. Nor would he have to stand on the porch holding a pumpkin shaped bucket all day and night to take collections from those paying the entry fee. Being able to roam about at will was going to be a lot more fun. Though he did take particular pride in the decorations he had helped set up too.\n\nThis year was one of those lucky occasions when Halloween fell on a Saturday, meaning there would be a steady stream of people. Rarely did it get crowded these days, with all the things going on in town, but there would be enough to keep everyone entertained in the entertaining all night. It also meant he didn't have to go to School the next day so he could stay up late and enjoy the after-party movie.\n\nThey started at 3pm in the afternoon. It was lots of fun! He got a lot of laughs chasing people down one of the longer corridors they had set up. He could just wait until they had just passed the room with the smoke machine and the \"crawling horrors\" which was usually one or more of the tenants hiding down under the smoke wearing scary clawed gloves to grab at people's ankles with from a semi-hidden spot as they walked by. Already startled they never expected to have him pop right out as they left the room in that moment of relief having escaped the clutches of something hidden in the mist.\n\nAnother spot he liked to hide in was at a dead end some people wound up in. He'd emerge from a veiled curtain that was just at the end, and it was so dark you couldn't see anything. It was there that he liked to turn his eye-lights on since he only had to roar loudly and take a couple steps between the curtain's folds.\n\nThere was a short break around 6pm for a quick dinner, someone had sprung for several pizzas for everyone to share. Then it was back to the fun. They had planned on wrapping up around 9:30pm or maybe 10pm if there were still people around, but as the night rolled past 8pm the visitors started to thin and it was looking to be a shorter run this time despite it being on a Saturday. Still, they had at least a hundred, or maybe even two go through since they started... which they had said would more than pay for the event the following year, plus there would be a good donation to the charities.\n\nIt was rolling up getting close to closing time when he met her. He didn't mean to scare her so badly, a lone little girl. He recognized her as one of the few neighbors within walking distance of the old spooky-looking Manor. The place was nestled in a thick bramble of woods and was one of those thickets that almost hid it from the road. She came from a small cul-de-sac that had been built sometime in the last couple decades to try and lure more development to that part of the town where it thinned out going from suburbs to rural communities. It was about a half-mile away. She had likely walked here on her own after running out of homes to get candy from where she lived.\n \nShe was by herself, and she was wearing a warrior woman costume that took him some time to place. It was the Valkyrie woman from that hero movie series. Sif or something. Her costume was a notch or two up from a \"kit\" costume you'd buy for a little kid at one of the big box stores, but not quite professionally tailored either. More like something you'd find in a drama club. Still quite a good costume. Though the leather skirt was a bit short for her, so much so that you could see the shorts she was wearing under it peeking out from under the hem. Especially after she plopped right down to the floor.\n\nHe had set up in his ambush spot, his finger tip carefully hold the little light switch for his eye-lights for when he jumped out. They would light up the short dead end draped in black curtains with an eerie reddish light that would make you think the whole area was coated in dark red blood as he jumped out.\n\nJumping out with a loud roar as he turned on the eye-lights, letting the wire go to raise his arms in a menacing gesture. He had barely seen her enter the short hallway before he jumped out, and with the lights half blinding him he didn't see her already tear streaked face and terror stricken wide eyes as he jumped out and shocked the already overwhelmed girl past her limit. Rather than letting out a girly high pitched shriek and turn to dash back the way she came like everyone else had that night, she just went stock still for a moment, shuddering where she stood before her knees gave out and she collapsed with a loud sob. Uh oh!\n\nHe wasn't supposed to push them that far. In fact if anyone looked \"too scared\" he was supposed to play friendly monster instead and act like a happy host and escort them to the end of the maze where the snack and gifts were set up in the dining-room where people could sit down and drink sodas or punch and chat.\n\nInstead she began sobbing and saying \"oh no!\" over and over. He turned off his eye-lights right away and flicked on a little flashlight he had tethered to his wrist. It had a blue-green filter over its lens and lit up the area with a slightly more friendly light. \"I'm sorry. I didn't mean to scare you that bad!\" he says trying to pull the headpiece of his costume off, but it was being stubborn with his big oversized claw gloves. \"I won't hurt you, I promise.\" Then a whiff of something hit him. The poor girl had wet herself!\n\nHe tries his best to ignore that, but at the same time he feared getting in trouble for over-doing it with a grade-school girl who obviously wasn't having fun at all. The girl just lets out another sob though she seems to be going from fearful to embarrassed or maybe a mixture of both. \"Hey... hey...\" he says trying to calm his voice as much as possible, though failing somewhat. \"It's okay. My name is Nash. What's yours?\" he asks, hoping upon hope that she answers instead of returning to crying.\n\n\"A... Aylee.\" she says her face now turning more and more mortified than terrified as she realizes she over-reacted. She obviously thought she was too old to be really scared by a place like this, and had entered alone, not realizing that all the jump scares and disorienting strobing lights in some of the rooms would work against her.\n\nNash looks around and then remembers where he is in the house. Behind one of the curtains is a door that leads to the basement. \"Hey there's a place we can go where you can kind of cool off. It wont have anyone else there to um... well it will be our secret okay? We can get you all cleaned up.\"\n\nThe girl stares up at Nash, her blushing so red it just blazes pinkly under her fur, and on the insides of her ears quite noticeably. She realizes he noticed her accident and it almost sends her back into a state of blubbering again except she instead takes a deeeeep breath and forces it down like the \"big girl\" she was supposed to be and quietly nods.\n\nShe reaches up and takes Nash's offered paw and he helps her up. He then turns and begins running his free paw along the wall till he finds a gap in the curtain and fumbles about for the nearby door that leads down to the finished basement.\n\nAfter opening the door for her and reaching in to flip a light switch on he lets her go down ahead of him, turning to close the door behind him and he throws a little latch locking it behind them. He then turns and follows closely behind guiding he to continue down to the bottom. The basement had been remodeled sometime in the 80's and so it had completely lost its \"spooky basement\" vibe and once you stepped down into the basement proper you saw that it had a much more modern feel to it.\n\n",

Even when it wasn&#039;t being worn as a costume it would look great decorating the wall of his room like some cryptozoologist&#039;s hunting trophy. He planned on splaying it out on his wall complete with the furred body and the long arms and feet that had large clawed hands that were articulated with the gloves from the inside.<br /><br />Today though he was also a &quot;runabout&quot;, or at least that was what they were calling anyone that filled the free-roaming hosts who were there to guide guests in or out, or could set up an ambush spot leaping out from one of the curtained walls in random places inside the maze-like corridors they had set up. Doing the jump scares was going to be great! <br /><br />It was one of the best host positions, and at least he wouldn&#039;t be confined to sitting up suddenly from inside a box. This year they dressed up a dummy to do that, operated by a rope pull. Nor would he have to stand on the porch holding a pumpkin shaped bucket all day and night to take collections from those paying the entry fee. Being able to roam about at will was going to be a lot more fun. Though he did take particular pride in the decorations he had helped set up too.<br /><br />This year was one of those lucky occasions when Halloween fell on a Saturday, meaning there would be a steady stream of people. Rarely did it get crowded these days, with all the things going on in town, but there would be enough to keep everyone entertained in the entertaining all night. It also meant he didn&#039;t have to go to School the next day so he could stay up late and enjoy the after-party movie.<br /><br />They started at 3pm in the afternoon. It was lots of fun! He got a lot of laughs chasing people down one of the longer corridors they had set up. He could just wait until they had just passed the room with the smoke machine and the &quot;crawling horrors&quot; which was usually one or more of the tenants hiding down under the smoke wearing scary clawed gloves to grab at people&#039;s ankles with from a semi-hidden spot as they walked by. Already startled they never expected to have him pop right out as they left the room in that moment of relief having escaped the clutches of something hidden in the mist.<br /><br />Another spot he liked to hide in was at a dead end some people wound up in. He&#039;d emerge from a veiled curtain that was just at the end, and it was so dark you couldn&#039;t see anything. It was there that he liked to turn his eye-lights on since he only had to roar loudly and take a couple steps between the curtain&#039;s folds.<br /><br />There was a short break around 6pm for a quick dinner, someone had sprung for several pizzas for everyone to share. Then it was back to the fun. They had planned on wrapping up around 9:30pm or maybe 10pm if there were still people around, but as the night rolled past 8pm the visitors started to thin and it was looking to be a shorter run this time despite it being on a Saturday. Still, they had at least a hundred, or maybe even two go through since they started... which they had said would more than pay for the event the following year, plus there would be a good donation to the charities.<br /><br />It was rolling up getting close to closing time when he met her. He didn&#039;t mean to scare her so badly, a lone little girl. She had likely walked here on her own after running out of homes to get candy from where she lived.<br />&nbsp;<br />She was by herself, and she was wearing a warrior woman costume that took him some time to place. It was the Valkyrie woman from that hero movie series. Sif or something. Her costume was a notch or two up from a &quot;kit&quot; costume you&#039;d buy for a little kid at one of the big box stores, but not quite professionally tailored either. More like something you&#039;d find in a drama club. Still quite a good costume. Though the leather skirt was a bit short for her, so much so that you could see the shorts she was wearing under it peeking out from under the hem. Especially after she plopped right down to the floor.<br /><br />He had set up in his ambush spot, his finger tip carefully hold the little light switch for his eye-lights for when he jumped out. They would light up the short dead end draped in black curtains with an eerie reddish light that would make you think the whole area was coated in dark red blood as he jumped out.<br /><br />Jumping out with a loud roar as he turned on the eye-lights, letting the wire go to raise his arms in a menacing gesture. He had barely seen her enter the short hallway before he jumped out, and with the lights half blinding him he didn&#039;t see her already tear streaked face and terror stricken wide eyes as he jumped out and shocked the already overwhelmed girl past her limit. Rather than letting out a girly high pitched shriek and turn to dash back the way she came like everyone else had that night, she just went stock still for a moment, shuddering where she stood before her knees gave out and she collapsed with a loud sob. Uh oh!<br /><br />He wasn&#039;t supposed to push them that far. In fact if anyone looked &quot;too scared&quot; he was supposed to play friendly monster instead and act like a happy host and escort them to the end of the maze where the snack and gifts were set up in the dining-room where people could sit down and drink sodas or punch and chat.<br /><br />Instead she began sobbing and saying &quot;oh no!&quot; over and over. He turned off his eye-lights right away and flicked on a little flashlight he had tethered to his wrist. It had a blue-green filter over its lens and lit up the area with a slightly more friendly light. &quot;I&#039;m sorry. I didn&#039;t mean to scare you that bad!&quot; he says trying to pull the headpiece of his costume off, but it was being stubborn with his big oversized claw gloves. &quot;I won&#039;t hurt you, I promise.&quot; Then a whiff of something hit him. The poor girl had wet herself!<br /><br />He tries his best to ignore that, but at the same time he feared getting in trouble for over-doing it with a grade-school girl who obviously wasn&#039;t having fun at all. The girl just lets out another sob though she seems to be going from fearful to embarrassed or maybe a mixture of both. &quot;Hey... hey...&quot; he says trying to calm his voice as much as possible, though failing somewhat. &quot;It&#039;s okay. My name is Nash. What&#039;s yours?&quot; he asks, hoping upon hope that she answers instead of returning to crying.<br /><br />&quot;A... Aylee.&quot; she says her face now turning more and more mortified than terrified as she realizes she over-reacted. She obviously thought she was too old to be really scared by a place like this, and had entered alone, not realizing that all the jump scares and disorienting strobing lights in some of the rooms would work against her.<br /><br />Nash looks around and then remembers where he is in the house. Behind one of the curtains is a door that leads to the basement. &quot;Hey there&#039;s a place we can go where you can kind of cool off. It wont have anyone else there to um... well it will be our secret okay? We can get you all cleaned up.&quot;<br /><br />The girl stares up at Nash, her blushing so red it just blazes pinkly under her fur, and on the insides of her ears quite noticeably. She realizes he noticed her accident and it almost sends her back into a state of blubbering again except she instead takes a deeeeep breath and forces it down like the &quot;big girl&quot; she was supposed to be and quietly nods.<br /><br />She reaches up and takes Nash&#039;s offered paw and he helps her up. He then turns and begins running his free paw along the wall till he finds a gap in the curtain and fumbles about for the nearby door that leads down to the finished basement.<br /><br />After opening the door for her and reaching in to flip a light switch on he lets her go down ahead of him, turning to close the door behind him and he throws a little latch locking it behind them. He then turns and follows closely behind guiding he to continue down to the bottom. The basement had been remodeled sometime in the 80&#039;s and so it had completely lost its &quot;spooky basement&quot; vibe and once you stepped down into the basement proper you saw that it had a much more modern feel to it.<br /><br /></span>",
