It's just a basic overview of how I work. Figured I'd share it here too. Some more info:\n\n1. Thumbnailing is a really important part of the process. I usually do several thumbnails for one picture. Some commissions it's a little less important than others, but it's still a good idea to do to generate ideas.\n\n2. I do a rough sketch that defines the pose a little better. I start thinking more about anatomy, but gesture is still a bigger focus here. I'll use several layers before I get a sketch I like. This one only took five, but I've been known to take 10 or more layers to get a sketch I'm happy with.\n\n3. After I've got it basically where I want it, I get the anatomy sorted out and finalized, as well as adding any clothing the character might be wearing. I flip often to make sure that I've not got any big mistakes that I haven't noticed before.\n\n4. I lower the sketch's opacity one last time and \"ink\" the picture. I use a modified version of the marker tool (settings provided in the image) to do this. I use a darker version of the color I plan to do my underpainting with.\n\n5. This one's a little self-explanatory. I fill everything in as one solid midtone. I then set the layer to lock transparent pixels so that I don't color outside that area in the next step.\n\n6. I basically do a loose cel-shading of the image to get the idea where my lights and darks are going. Remember that the lightest lights are going to be on the areas closest to the light source.\n\n7. I set the brush tool to the simple circle shape and blend the values in. I then go to my value scale and pick out colors to continue defining things. Under the settings, I'm constantly shifting the blending setting based on whether I need to blend (higher) or define (lower).\n\n8. Now, I make another layer that's set to clipping mode so that it won't color outside the previous layer. I then color in everything flatly with the pen tool on the same layer.\n\n9. After that, I set the blending mode to overlay. I might also adjust the opacity of the layer for different effects. This is similar to a traditional technique called glazing where transparent layers of paint are built up to show the layers underneath.\n\n10. I adjust the value layer's colors using the Hue/Saturation filter in SAI. I just play with it until it looks good.\n\n10a.
