Tidal Wave was in the middle of her training exam for the Paragon Task Force. Thanks to the nanotech embedded within her wetsuit, she was able to clear the strength and speed test with ease. A team of observers watched from a one way window as they talked among themselves. They discussed her score on the written and physical exam. While she did not score the best on the written exam, her physical made up for it. The lead observer pressed a green button and spoke into the microphone.

"That will conclude Miss Wave. Excellent work. Someone will come to retrieve you shortly. Feel free use the training course until then," the voice said. She looked at the window and waved in understanding. She decided to stay in the pool even. It kind of remained her of the ocean. She dove under the water and floated on her back. She hoped that performance would make them consider her a worthy candidate. About fifteen minutes later, a staff personnel came into the training course. He helped Tidal Wave out of the pool and dried her with a towel. She subtly flinched at being dry. She changed her tail back into feet and stood up. The staff member escorted down the long hallway until they reached a waiting room. He opened the door for her, told her to have a seat and until someone came for her. She nodded her head as she walked inside. He wished her good luck and closed the door. 

She sat in a plastic chair and picked up a magazine. She opened it and began to glance through it. The magazine was about the latest upcoming heroes. She flipped through the book until she came upon a story about the Deep Sea Twins, Aquafina and Poseidon. Tidal Wave became ecstatic as she read about the twins. Most of society knew about Poseidon and his legendary trident. Aquafina and her castanets were relatively new. Tidal Wave wondered if Aquafina ever felt like she was in her brother's shadow at times? About an hour later, she dropped the magazine when she fell asleep. The door opened and a wolf in a white coat walked in. He held a clipboard in his hands as he went over the notes. He looked at the sleeping bipedal seal and walked over to her. He gently rocked her, and she jolted awake. He chuckled and smiled at her. 

"I apologize for the long wait Miss Wave. Allow me to be the first one to congratulate you. You have been formally accepted as a member of the Paragon Task Force. Congratulations," he said. Tidal Wave quickly stood up and shook the wolf's hand. She thanked him repeatedly. He tilted his head towards the hall. He led her down the hallway until they reached a set of elevators. The wolf pressed the button, and the elevator on the right opened. They walked onto it as he pressed the button for the tenth floor. They chatted for a bit until the door opened. He then led her to a door with the name "Captain Reino Severi" written on the plague. She looked at the wolf.

"He's going to be your commanding officer. Paragon works similarly to the military in terms of Chain of Command," the wolf explained as he knocked on the door. Tidal Wave nodded her head as a voice told them to enter. The wolf opened the door and walked inside first. Tidal Wave felt butterflies in her stomach. She hoped that the Captain was nice enough. The wolf opened the door and told her come in. She gulped and walked in. The wolf introduced her to Reino Severi.The Finnish Lapphund stood up from his desk and walked to her. He shook her hand her. 

"Try not to scare the young lady to death," the wolf said as he left the room. Severi returned to his desk. 

"Have a seat and tell me about yourself. Why do you want to be a hero? Why work for Paragon," Severi asked.

"Not at all. It helps me focus those under my command in the best direction," he said. She thought carefully about how she wanted to answer. 

"Well, my first reason is because I have the ability to become a good hero. I want to follow in the footsteps of the Deep Sea Twins. Society underestimated them because they are sea dwellers and looked what happened. I believe I can do the same thing. The second is less noble and more selfish. I heard Paragon has the best pay when it comes to heroes. While I spend most of my time in the ocean, land has better food and stuff I like now and then..." she said as she pushed her index fingers together. Severi laughed.

"Well now. I think that's the first time someone has been straight forward with me in awhile. There's nothing wrong with wanting things out of life. You may have super abilities, but you still have live just like everyone else," he said. She smiled.

"Alright then, I have a task for you. It's nothing glamorous, but it will give you a good test," he said.She looked at him with eager eyes. 

"You're going to have to go into the sewers. A small intel has it that some a creature from the Winterson Zoo. It could be simply scared. Go and investigate," he said. He opened his drawer and gave her a smartphone.

"Your official communication device. It has your profile and everything you will need. Try not to lose or damage. The technology in it is more expensive than the latest smartphone on the market right now," he said. She carefully took it and hid it inside her wetsuit. He stood up and performed the Paragon salute. He placed his left fist behind his back and his right fist over his heart. Tidal Wave mimicked the movement in a more sloppy manner. She then turned around as her aqua blue hair swung freely like the ocean current. She walked out of his office. She looked around for the elevator. 

"Are looking for the elevator?" a maintenance guy asked. 
"Yes," she said.

"Just go to the left and make another left. You'll see the sign," the maintenance member said.

"Thanks!" she said as she followed his directions. She pressed the button and rode the left one to the first floor. She followed a few furs until she walked out of the front door.She walked until she reach an alleyway. Common sense said if anyone ever saw enter the sewer, she would undoubtedly be labeled as "Sewer Girl" for the rest of her life. She moved the manhole cover and quickly descended into it. She took out her phone, turned on the flashlight and walked along the path.

"Oh goodness," she said as she covered mouth with her free hand. "I should have asked for a breathing mask," she said. No way she was going into that nasty water if she could help it. Half an hour had passed and still no lost creature. She was about to call Headquarters until she realized she didn't know much about her phone. Well, she had time to figure it out. She went into the setting. She looked towards the water when she heard something in it. Something burst out of the water and roared. She rolled out of the way. 

"Well...at least I found it...." she said. She sprung up and saw it was a serpent. The serpent roared and launched at her. She rolled out the way again then jumped at her. She punched the serpent in the side of the face though that only seemed to infuriate it. The serpent whipped its tail around slapped her with it . She hit the wall. Fortunately, the nanotech in her wetsuit prevented any serious injuries to her body. However, her head hit the cement wall and caused her to fall in the sewer water. The nanotech automatically changed her to mermaid form and kept her from drowning. The serpent grabbed her in its teeth and dragged her off. 

Tidal Wave slowly opened her eyes. She carefully sat up and place a hand on the side of her head. She looked down and saw her wetsuit had been ruined. The cosmetics of the suit was not a major issue. Without the nanotech, she was just a simple mermaid. She couldn't switch back and forth anymore, and the nanotech only realize her mermaid form as the default body. The water burst up as the serpent emerged from the water. 

"You're awake at last..." it said. Tidal Wave must have taken a bigger blow than originally believed. She could have swore she heard it speak inside of her head. The serpent spoke as if it read her thoughts. 
"No child. It is not your imagination. I am speaking to you telepathically. And now you are going to help out in a number of ways," the serpent said as it slithered over her. It hurt her pride and disgusted her, but it was better than the alternative. She tried the swim away when the water burst apart, and the serpent revealed himself. He now stood on two legs. He was over six feet tall and had refined muscles. He jumped in the water and swam after. Tidal Wave was fast, but the serpent was a shark. He grabbed her tail and flung her into a wall. He leaped out of the water and landed next to her. He grabbed her by the hair and held her face to his sheath.
