Most citizens had their home filled with 'pointers' - items linked to a specific place and time. The loss of a pointer in many cases could be likened to the loss of a memory itself. Many times, though, one wouldn't really even notice - could one remember forgetting something? The memory was still there, of course, as crystal as the day it was first taken... but without a pointer to it, it was lost among all the others.\n\nPoly was sneaking though the maintenance facility of a starbase when she encountered such a pointer up on the wall - a pinup picture... of her. She remembered posing for it, for laughing as it was taken - she was older then. Or.. her body was. It hadn't felt right, like wearing tailored clothes that wern't yours, a subtle but everpresent feeling of unease. She started to remember the rest of the context as well, but she blinked a few times and looked away. Now wasn't the time for a trip down memory lane. Without a 'pointer' into memory, any particular memory is lost. Even 'core memories' - those that go a long way towards forming the personality - can be lost without a pointer to them.
