Morning came faster than I’d have liked, waking me from quite the peaceful dream. Muttering to myself, I climbed out of bed and padded my way to the bathroom to relieve myself. Upon seeing the shower, my thoughts returned to the previous day, of the little bunny I’d saved, the leopard men I’d killed. I sighed at that and shook my head, returning to the matter at hand. Life has a way of throwing things at you, like curve balls and shuriken, and it had certainly through quite a lot at me, especially this past week. What I didn’t expect was to come out of my bathroom and find the little bunny girl from yesterday, sitting on my bed, wearing one of the only three shirts I owned. It dwarfed her and would have been hilarious if I wasn’t totally confused as to how she got into my apartment. Blinking with confusion, I turned to my front door and tilted my head to the side, seeing it closed and locked, like I’d left it, then I looked back at her and pointed at the door. My expression must have been humorous because she cutely giggled and waved. “Hi~” she sang to me. “I picked the lock.” She nodded at that and I could just feel one of my eyebrows twitching with disbelief. She just giggled again and swung her feet and forth, looking fucking adorable. Finally I sighed and shook my head, raising a hand to rub my eyes briefly before I crossed the room to her and petted her head, fingers running through her silky blond hair. “You can stay as long as you like,” I told her softly, my voice a rich mixture of velvet and silk, making her blush instantly, her ears perking up. She raised her little hands and clutched at my wrist, tilting her head back to look up at me. “Really? That’s okay?” she asked quietly, as if disbelieving I’d even offer. I simply nod and smile lightly before my phone rings. I pull away and go over, taking the cordless off the hook, holding it up to my ear, listening as the voice on the other end spoke to me. With a sigh, I hang up and place it back on the hook. I look over at her and find her giving me this sad look, clearly having heard the voice. “You have to go?” she asked quietly. A simple nod is my only reply and I grab a clean pair of pants, tugging them on and feeding my tail through the hole in the back. After pulling on my jacket and making sure I collected my knife before leaving the apartment this time, I step out into the hall and steel myself. Sometimes it just has to be done… It must have rained again during the night, the streets and sidewalks wet again, the sky overcast again. All it ever seemed to do is rain in this city, as if trying to wash away the filth that clotted here. Raising a hand, I ran my fingers through my pale hair and regarded my surroundings. Today’s job was in a part of the city I hadn’t yet been, which could mean anything from random druggies in alley’s looking to mug me, to prostitutes working hard to get someone to trick out of their cash. With my guard up, I made my way through the streets to the aforementioned place, finding a burly bear standing there outside the club. He gave me a nod, his arms folded across his chest. “Logan,” he said simply in a gruff voice. That was the best greeting I’d get. I sighed as I leaned against the wall on the other side of the door we were guarding. I did this sometimes, worked odd jobs like being a bouncer at a club or being a body guard for people from outside the city. I never knew the names of the people who contacted me, just that they paid well in nondescript envelopes mailed to my apartment. That had freaked me out the first time, but eventually I got used to it. Just like how I’d gotten used to everything else about this city. Blood, guts, gore, dead bodies, hookers turning tricks in alleys, muggings, public police beat downs. Oh yeah, the city had police, but they were more thugs than officers of the law. An explosion inside the club pushed me away from the wall, staggering me to one knee as the world shook around me. A loud buzzing filled my ears and I realized from the pain and the way the world swirled that my hearing was fucked. I looked over at the burly bear that had been standing on the other side of the door, finding bits and pieces of him splattered about the concrete… half his face on the ground beside me, that lifeless eye staring up at me. Shit. I stood and turned, finding the club on fire and as I stared, sound came rushing back. The roar of the flames, the screams of the still living inside, all of it hit me in an instant and I rushed into the inferno without thinking. Most of the club goers were dead; gore, fire and the dead everywhere. I could see a few hyenas towards the back of the rather large club, safe from the flames and apparently unhurt but too terrified to flee. I rushed towards them and pushed them towards the entrance, immediately turning to find others as they rushed off. Just as I discovered and rushed over to a wounded fox, I heard more screams and turned, seeing the ceiling crash down on those hyenas, crushing them to death. I grimaced and turned my gaze back to the fox. A young male, but with all the smoke choking the air I couldn’t tell much more than that. Coughing heavily and looking around, I can’t really see an exit but I know there must be because the smoke isn’t as thick as it should be. Picking up the fox in my arms, I grimace again as I feel sticky blood staining my chest. Great. I make my way to the opposite side of the club, finding a hole in one of the walls where the explosion had knocked out the bricks, exposing the street outside. Out into the cooler street, I suck in fresh air and set the fox down, realizing just then that the poor guy died back in the club as I’d carried him. Fucking great. With a sigh, I shake my head and straighten, patting out the fire on my coat sleeves… How and when I got back to my apartment I’m not sure, I must have zoned out, but I suddenly found myself staring at my door for who knows how long. I sigh and unlock the door, finding the little bunny girl waiting for me. Her eyes went big, seeing me and I shook my head to stop her from asking questions. Her lip quivered a little so I reach over and gently pet her head. With that, I turned and stepped into the bathroom to clean the soot, blood and ash from my body…
