Otlan snapped awake with a jolt that brought him up into a low crouch, looking frantically around him. Gone was the safe and warm bed and bed room he and his lover had shared. All around him was nothing but a decaying and festering swamp, full of stinging insects and worse. His bed had been a bed of soft moss he'd found on a patch of dry land nestled between the roots of an enormous tree.
Realizing where he was, he groaned and sat back, rubbing his face. He wasn't sure how long it's been since he'd last seen Jen. Five years? Ten? Twenty? And yet he still missed her so deeply. And why shouldn't he? The young bear had literally saved his life. After falling through a dimensional rift and smacking down through the branches of a tree, he'd laid on the wet ground, broken and bleeding, a terrible storm raging all around him. Through the gloom and the howl of the storm though, she appeared. Dressed in a rain coat and wielding nothing more then a flashlight. His guardian angle, Jen Kai.
Seeing how badly he was hurt, she didn't hesitate. She helped get him on his feet and helped him manage to hobble back to her home. After getting him on the couch, she started not only treating his wounds, but cooked and fed him a home cook meal. The first one he'd had in centuries. And she did it all with the efficiency he'd rarely seen in adults. Otlan admired his little savior, and as the months passed and his injuries healed, they grew quite close. In that time, Jen showed that she was not only quite mature and motherly for her age, she was also a cute little flirt. At first, Otlan was hesitant to respicate to her advances, but eventually, the Love he felt for her in his heart won out, and he started returning her feelings, and when his wounds were fully healed, Otlan repayed her in the way he knew best, and the two spent an unforgettable night together. Otlan vowing to stay with her forever.
Fate, however, is a cruel Mistress...Eight months later, the two of them were walking down a street in her hometown, arm in arm. Her with her Baby Bump, him fretting over her, and both of them happy as could be. Otlan should have known better. He should have known that the universe wouldn't allow him to be happy. But he'd managed to fool himself. The first he felt was a tingling sensation along his skin, making his fur stand on end. He had just enough time to make Jen grab ahold of a nearby lamp post and press a strange coin into her paw before there was a loud crack, and in the wall of the building behind him, another dimensional rift opened up, and began sucking up everything around it, including Otlan. He dug his claws into the concrete side walk, trying to resist, but the pull only grew stronger, and dragged him back. He managed to scream out before it swallowed him. "JEN!!...HOLD ONTO THAT COIN!! I S...SWEAR BY ALL THE GODS!! I WILL FIND YOU AGAIN!!!!" With one final yank, his claws were pulled free and he was sent tumbling through the air as the rift closed behind him.
He screamed in rage, slamming his fist through one of the tree roots and tearing out a massive chunk of it. Panting hard in pain and anger, he looked down at his bloodied fist. He felt the gentle pulse of the coin, so he knew Jen still had it, but unless she actually used it to summon him, he couldn't pinpoint her location, and he hadn't had time to tell her how to use it. One hundred jumps later, and he was still no closer to finding her.
He closed his eyes for a minuet, calming down before pressing his blood soaked hand and his forehead against the tree that had sheltered him. "I swear...on this Blood Oath...I will get back to you Jen...if it's the last thing I ever do...Until then...please continue watching over me..." He stood there a moment more, his hand finally healing. He nodded, gathering his few belongings, and once more waded through the feted waters of this damnable swamp. His heart and thoughts heavy, his spirit leaden.
