In an effort to stave off the unhappiness caused by the isolation that comes with huge technological improvements, the powers that be start producing Life Partners. They're basically extremely life-like beings that use some kind of very textured hard-light technology, and each one of them is individually generated according to the person's True Compatible Desires- as in no weird monkey's paw situations, actual artificial people that are perfect for you.\n\nI was holed up in my apartment, and an online friend was talking my ear off about how they were going to go line up to get their Life Partner and wanted me to come along. I was really cagey about it for reasons which would become clear later, but they insisted. It was dark and raining as usual, and the line was long, but it was kind of enchanting to see all these people individually being given these people perfect for them. Supermodels, bodybuilders, inspiring larger-than-life characters, even the occasional softie that was obviously made to be inoffensive and supportive. My friend got hers and he was a really sharp-looking guy with a lithe build and a quick wit. Then it was my turn. And everything went wrong.\n\nThat's not to say it didn't function- it did, perfectly. Out of the amazing machine popped an extremely cute cartoon raccoon child with an outrageous build. She was apparently the most gorgeous thing I'd ever seen, and the judgement was instant. I left, and the newly minted girl, Kestral, followed.\n\nThe rest of the dream was kind of a weird cross between Ghost in the Shell and Cowboy Bebop, just going places and seeing this setting and people reacting.
