Leaves fell gently around him as the sun shone down through the trees.\n\nSuddenly the sky grew dark and he heard a howl and the footfalls of something large chasing after him. The fox panicked and ran as fast as he could, dodging trees trying to get away. With every tree he dodged, he heard the sound of whatever was chasing him barrel through the plants gaining ground.\n\nHe found himself in a clearing and stopped in fright upon seeing what waited for him, a tall pale figure with blood red eyes and a hood, a figure with glowing red marks covering its body, a dark feline with long steel fangs, and a shadowy figure with a large tail and a white mask.\n\nThe fox nearly pissed himself as he tried to back away and ran into a paw twice his size. He swallowed his fear and looked up seeing a large wolf towering over him then he heard laughter.\n\n“Is the great beast of the Abyss frightened?”\n\nHe heard a swishing sound and looked back seeing a red-eyed kitsune walking towards him with its tails swarming like snakes. Niko quaked in fear as he saw the single blood red tail swimming among the snow-white ones.\n\n“Death is coming for you again, little boy…”\n\nNiko backed away as quickly as he could but he felt the stabbing pain rip through his chest again as another of the kitsune’s tails turned red with blood. \n\n--------------------------\n\nNiko woke with a start and felt himself falling. He let out a startled cry as both he and his chair crashed into the desk behind him and then to the floor.\n\nHe lay there panting and trying to calm down as the other students in class either gasped or laughed at him. for his best friend’s love life.\n\nSuddenly a shot rang out and No’sh felt a great deal of pain in his side that caused him to wreck.\n\n“What happened, man?” Niko landed on his feet and ran to the side of No’sh.\n\n“Some bastard shot me!” he shouted from where he lay beside his moped, “A-am I gonna die?”\n\nNiko looked at No’sh with worry until he noticed the bright purple explosion of paint right above his kidney, “I think you’ll live…”\n\n“You’re lucky, Norbert,” they heard a voice say with a laugh and looked back to see a figure standing there with a paintball gun resting on his shoulder.\n\n“I could’ve gone for a headshot,” a panther in a St. Rutherford school uniform said, his saffron eyes shone with a twisted joy at the pain he caused that was mirrored by his brace filled smile.\n\nNiko let out a grown, “Who the hell are you?”\n\n“Why don’t you ask Norby?” the panther asked while pointing the gun at them.\n\n“Blow me, Droz,” said No’sh as he stood up holding his side in pain.\n\n“Oh please, Norby, if I remember right you’re the one who enjoyed doing that,” the panther said with a cruel grin, “I’m surprised you haven’t done it with him yet.”\n\n“What the hell do you want?” Niko asked as he got into a defensive stance.\n\nDroz smiled his steely grin and spun his gun, “We’re going to play a little game.”\n\n“Go fuck yourself,” No’sh let out his own growl, “I know the twisted games you play, and we ain’t gonna play.”\n\nDroz pouted slightly, “Oh poo, I guess I’ll just have to make due with that pretty little mink then.”\n\nNiko let out a war cry and lunged at the panther only to hit nothing and receive a gun butt across his jaw.\n\n“What the hell did you do with Zoe you freak?!” No’sh shouted as Niko stumbled back.\n\n“If you play the game then nothing,” Droz’s face darkened and his eyes seemed to glow a sickly yellow, “but if you don’t then there’s no telling what my associate will do.”\n\n“Fine, I’ll play,” Niko spit out some blood, “But The scent of the forest filled his nose and he could feel himself running.

He felt free, he felt happy, and he felt cool grass between his toes and fingers as he ran. Leaves fell gently around him as the sun shone down through the trees.

Suddenly the sky grew dark and he heard a howl and the footfalls of something large chasing after him. The fox panicked and ran as fast as he could, dodging trees trying to get away. With every tree he dodged, he heard the sound of whatever was chasing him barrel through the plants gaining ground.

He found himself in a clearing and stopped in fright upon seeing what waited for him, a tall pale figure with blood red eyes and a hood, a figure with glowing red marks covering its body, a dark feline with long steel fangs, and a shadowy figure with a large tail and a white mask.

The fox nearly pissed himself as he tried to back away and ran into a paw twice his size. He swallowed his fear and looked up seeing a large wolf towering over him then he heard laughter.

“Is the great beast of the Abyss frightened?”

He heard a swishing sound and looked back seeing a red-eyed kitsune walking towards him with its tails swarming like snakes. Niko quaked in fear as he saw the single blood red tail swimming among the snow-white ones.

“Death is coming for you again, little boy…”

Niko backed away as quickly as he could but he felt the stabbing pain rip through his chest again as another of the kitsune’s tails turned red with blood.

Niko woke with a start and felt himself falling. He let out a startled cry as both he and his chair crashed into the desk behind him and then to the floor.

He lay there panting and trying to calm down as the other students in class either gasped or laughed at him. The scent of the forest filled Niko’s nose again as he looked up and saw a black figure standing over him wearing a hooded sweatshirt.

“You ok?” the hooded figure asked as towards the fallen fox.

“It’s cool, Nikolas,” the raven grinned at Niko’s surprised face.

“How do you know my name?” Niko tensed and if not for the teacher, being in the room, would have been prepared to fight.

Speaking of teachers…

“Mr. Todd, Mr. Nightwing take your seats so we can gat back to the lesson.”

“Yes. sir,” both the fox and the bird said as they took their seats.

“Who the hell are you?!” Niko asked with growl as he slammed the bird against a row of lockers.

The crow didn’t blink or show any surprise as he was assaulted by the white fox after class.

“Shame…”

Niko looked at the bird in confusion.

“My name is Shame,” the crow clarified as Niko continued holding him against the lockers.

“Your name is Shame?” Niko’s grip loosened letting the bird stand on his own two feet.

The bird brushed the stray white fur off of his hoodie, “Yes, I was so named because that is what I am, Nikolas.”

“What do you mean you’re shame, and how the hell do you know my name?” Niko asked with honest curiosity, “I still haven’t even had it changed in the system.”

“I know much about you Nikolas,” Shame began walking away, “Thought your mind is shattered the past is written clearly on your soul.”

Niko stood there confused as the crow walked away.

“Hey, wait a minute. What’s that supposed to mean?”

No’sh looked left and then right as he snuck around trying to find a nice quiet place to wait till lunch.

“Man it’s getting so a guy can’t even relax around here.”

He saw an opening and ran towards a room that shouldn’t be occupied.

“Norbert Shante Walker!”

No’sh stopped dead in his tracks and turned around nervously to see his angry mother standing there.

“H-hi mom… What are you doing here?” he asked with a blush as he noticed a small group of stragglers watching the commotion.

“The school called and told me you haven’t been going to classes for nearly a month,” she marched over towards her son who shrunk back with his tail between his legs as she approached.

“We all have things that we’d rather do,” Frankie led the way through the waiting room into the receptionist area, “besides if you work hard I’ll get you something special for dessert tonight.”

Zoe perked up at that, “Can I have some mint ice cream?”

“Sure,” Frankie said as she walked back to tell Nick she was back and that she had brought an assistant with her.

Zoe bounced around slightly before she sat down, “Maybe today isn’t as bad as I thought.”

Niko let out a defeated sigh; he had been looking for Zoe since before lunch and hadn’t been able to find a trace of her by the end of the day.

“I can’t find Zoe…” Niko then looked at the green fox and tried not to laugh as No’sh struggled under the weight of the load, “What’s with you?”

No’sh looked around and spotted an open locker, “My mom came to school, so I had to go to class…” He threw his unwanted load into the locker and slammed it shut, hoping that it didn’t belong to anybody he knew, “You have any idea how much homework piles up when you skip nearly a month of classes?”

“No clue,” Niko said and then let out another sigh.

“Haven’t even known her a full week and you’re already this bad huh?” the green fox asked.

“I just wanna see her,” Niko said with a blush, “Is that so bad?”

“Yes,” No’sh answered with a grin, “It’s so bad that you’re becoming a wussy who gives up just because you can’t find her in school.”

“But we still have our last class…” the white fox said while looking at his friend.

“Skip it,” Niko looked at No’sh shocked, “You heard me, Snowball, let’s skip the rest of the day and go looking for your girlfriend.”

“B-but…”

“But nothing,” No’sh squatted near Niko and grinned, “If you really love her, then you shouldn’t be afraid to do something stupid to see her.”

“Who says I love her?” Niko growled defensively as he blushed.

“I know you, and ever since you met her you’ve been goofy,” the green fox said with a smile as he stood back up, “Now lets get our tails outta here and go find your girlfriend.”

Niko stood and followed No’sh who glanced around as they snuck out a side entrance. Unbeknownst to them two pairs of eyes were watching them.

“So shall we begin out game?”

“I just need to gather my pieces and then we can.”

“Do what?” Niko looked back from where he sat crouched on the headlight sniffing for Zoe.

“Sit like that, I mean I could understand if you were a bird or something…” No’sh let out a sigh as Niko looked at him strangely, “Never mind.”

They drove for a while in silence turning down many streets with Niko constantly sniffing.

“Do you even have a clue where you’re going?” the green fox asked as he glanced down at his gas gauge.

“Nope,” was Niko’s response.

No’sh let out a sigh and kept driving knowing that he was doing this for his best friend’s love life.

Suddenly a shot rang out and No’sh felt a great deal of pain in his side that caused him to wreck.

“What happened, man?” Niko landed on his feet and ran to the side of No’sh.

“Some bastard shot me!” he shouted from where he lay beside his moped, “A-am I gonna die?”

Niko looked at No’sh with worry until he noticed the bright purple explosion of paint right above his kidney, “I think you’ll live…”

“You’re lucky, Norbert,” they heard a voice say with a laugh and looked back to see a figure standing there with a paintball gun resting on his shoulder.

“I could’ve gone for a headshot,” a panther in a St. Rutherford school uniform said, his saffron eyes shone with a twisted joy at the pain he caused that was mirrored by his brace filled smile.

Niko let out a grown, “Who the hell are you?”

“Why don’t you ask Norby?” the panther asked while pointing the gun at them.

“Blow me, Droz,” said No’sh as he stood up holding his side in pain.

“Oh please, Norby, if I remember right you’re the one who enjoyed doing that,” the panther said with a cruel grin, “I’m surprised you haven’t done it with him yet.”

“What the hell do you want?” Niko asked as he got into a defensive stance.

Droz smiled his steely grin and spun his gun, “We’re going to play a little game.”

“Go fuck yourself,” No’sh let out his own growl, “I know the twisted games you play, and we ain’t gonna play.”

Droz pouted slightly, “Oh poo, I guess I’ll just have to make due with that pretty little mink then.”

Niko let out a war cry and lunged at the panther only to hit nothing and receive a gun butt across his jaw.

“What the hell did you do with Zoe you freak?!” No’sh shouted as Niko stumbled back.

“If you play the game then nothing,” Droz’s face darkened and his eyes seemed to glow a sickly yellow, “but if you don’t then there’s no telling what my associate will do.”

“Fine, I’ll play,” Niko spit out some blood, “But if there’s so much as a scratch on her, I’ll rip you apart.”

Zoe let out a sigh, it hadn’t even been an hour and she was already bored to death.

“Can I go home yet, Frankie?” the young mink asked with a pout.

“Nope,” Frankie didn’t even look up from the small bit of filing she was doing, “You gotta stay till I get off, or you don’t get your ice cream.”

“That’s not fair,” Zoe said with a huff, “I wanted to go home early.”

“Why, were you hoping to see your boyfriend after school or something?” Frankie asked with a grin.

“No, nothing like that!” the mink shouted in embarrassment, “I just had a hard day at school and wanted to go home, take a shower, and sleep.”

“Oh come on, Z,” Frankie gave her cousin a knowing grin, “You would have called that fox up to come play.”

“W-what are you talking about?” she asked defensively.

“You’re in heat,” Frankie said with a smile.

“I-I dunno what you’re talking about,” she said as she blushed and hid behind her tail.

“Oh, come on,” the ferret looked at Zoe smugly, “I can smell it, I’m sure Dr. Lupis can smell it, hell, I bet your fox could smell it to.”

Zoe buried herself in her tail, “D-don’t be nasty, Frankie.”

“There’s nothing nasty about growing up, Z,” Frankie pulled Zoe’s tail out of the way, “I just ask that you don’t sleep with Niko while you’re in heat.”

Zoe turned even redder through her cream-colored fur, “W-what makes you think I’d sleep with him?”

“Oh please, you’re a girl in heat and he’s a cute boy, at least from what you’ve told me,” Frankie ruffled her cousin’s hair, “You’d be a weird girl if you didn’t atleast fantasies about it.”

Zoe blushed but couldn’t help but grin slightly.

“I knew it,” Frankie smiled back, “just don’t have sex anytime soon, I don’t want to have to skin your boyfriend.”

“Gee thanks, Frankie,” Zoe said with a look, “I coulda gotten a mom answer from any adult.”

“Ok fine,” the ferret grinned, “the hand, the mouth, or the tail.”

Zoe looked at her cousin in confusion.

“If you decide to yiff him anyways,” Frankie smiled wickedly at the blush that spread once again on Zoe, “those are the three best places when you’re in heat that won’t get you knocked up.”

“W-wha…” Zoe trailed off as she hid behind her tail again.

“I’m sure your fox would love any of them,” Frankie thought for a moment, “But if you want to give him a special treat, let him take you in the tail hole.”

“I-I dunno if I could do that,” Zoe fixed her skirt in nervousness.

“Trust me, it feels good after you get used to it,” Frankie said with a smile, “I know I like it.”

“God, Frankie, I didn’t need to know.”

The two girls were so lost in their conversation that they didn’t even notice the imposing white figure watching them from the door, or hear the hiss as his tongue tasted the air.

“Serpentine!” No’sh shouted as a shot rang out and struck the ground beside him.

Niko and No’sh ran through the streets with their ears perked up waiting for the next shot to be fired.

“What the hell is wrong with this guy?” Niko asked as he veered left to throw off any incoming shots, “You seem to know him.”

“I’ll tell ya later, Niko,” No’sh went right, “but right now we gotta avoid that psycho’s sniping.”

Niko dove to the side of the road as an explosion of green appeared where he once was.

“The rules are simple,” Droz smiled from where he aimed his gun, “They have till nightfall to reach Zoe, while I try to pick them off. They are allowed help, but just so you know, they become part of the game and viable targets too…”

A fur wearing a long white coat stood behind him, “Very well, Darrius, but remember you aren’t to kill them.”

“I know,” he took another shot intentionally missing, “but I still get to take a prize from anyone I take out, right?”

“As you wish, just don’t disfigure them,” the coat wearing fur began walking away, “It really messes with my research when they are not whole.”

“And I really wanted to mount Norby’s tail on my wall…” the panther let out a sigh as he prepared to fire again and vanished.

A shot sounded again and a paintball exploded in front of Niko’s bare feet.

“What the hell!” Niko stumbled and rolled towards a bush in somebody’s yard.

“I dunno, maybe he has a few buddies waiting for us,” No’sh stopped and looked around with paranoia in his eyes.

“If that’s the case we need some backup of our own…” Niko looked around as he stood up and didn’t see anybody, “Why’s there never a cop around when you need one?”

“Do you honestly think they would be of any help?” the foxes looked up at the sound of the voice and saw a black bird perched on a streetlight.

Niko looked at the bird in confusion, “You’re that Shame guy ain’t you?”

“Sha, if you don’t mind,” the bird replied as he stretched his wings and leapt from the light.

“Huh, who’s this guy?” No’sh nervously asked as his ears twitched waiting for another shot.

“Some bird from school,” Niko sniffed at the air trying to find Zoe’s scent to make the game stop.

A shot sounded in a new direction and in the blink of an eye, Niko saw a hoodie flying through the air beside him and a splat as a paintball exploded in it.

“If you want to win, you should pay attention to the strange Cheshire cat you seem to be facing,” Sha said, as he stood there bare from the waist up.

“How’d you do that?” No’sh asked in shock.

“Your opponent is special, so is his spirit,” Sha said as he picked up his discarded sweatshirt.

“Why’d you help me?” Niko asked as the bird stood up, “I nearly beat you up earlier.”

“Does it matter?” Sha turned and began to walk away, “If you are going to find Zoe, then you should look for her Sentry.”

No’sh watched as the bird left, expecting another shot to come, but there was none, the only thing that seemed out of place on the bird was a white patch of feathers in the middle of his back that looked like an eye.

“What he mean by that?” the green fox asked as he looked around wondering why they were still standing around with a gun-toting maniac after them.

Niko stood and thought for a while till a shot was fired and whizzed by his ear.

“What is wrong with this guy anyways?” Niko seemed to effortlessly dodge the rapid shots fired at him.

“Are you goin all Neo, on me Niko?” asked No’sh from where he hid behind a tree.

“I dunno…” the shots stopped, “Who’s Neo?”

“Never mind…” No’sh came out and looked at the paint-splattered street, “Any ideas where Zoe is?”

“With her cousin would be my guess,” Niko took off running.

“Hey, wait for me!” No’sh chased after him.

Zoe fidgeted in her seat. She couldn’t stay much longer, school was nearly over and she wanted to hang out with the few friends she had.

“I’m bored,” she whined to Frankie who was reclining with her feet on the desk.

Frankie sat up and spun her chair a little, “It’s a slow day, not many people made appointments.”

Zoe hopped out of her chair and began to walk off.

“I’m going to the bathroom,” she said as she walked out of the reception area.

“Don’t do anything bad. Z,” Frankie grinned wickedly, “I know you’re in heat but it’s still a public restroom.”

Zoe blushed and ran to the bathroom leaving a chuckling Frankie all alone until a hiss was heard from the waiting room.

“Excuse me miss,” Frankie turned to see a very tall albino reptile standing on the other side of the glass.

“Welcome to Pouncefield Family Medical Clinic,” Frankie said with a smile, “How may I help you sir?”

“Is that where I am?” the hissing voice of tall albino sounded, “I guess I’m more lost then I thought.”

Frankie looked at him in confusion, “How’d you not know where you are?”

“I’m new in town and I’ve yet to have anybody walk me around,” Frankie looked up to the retiles face and saw that his eyes were as red as any other albino’s except they were kind of cloudy white in some areas.

“Oh, I’m sorry sir, I didn’t realize you were blind,” Frankie blushed slightly, “I’m Frankie Sentry, if you need anything don’t hesitate to ask…”

“Thank you very much, but if I can just rest here and get my bearings I should be able to find my way home.”

“Of course sir, rest as long as you need to.”

Droz sat back as he meticulously went about reloading his paintball gun.

“Just like old times, Norby,” he said out loud, “Soon I’ll shoot all over your tail just like when we were together.”

“Up till three years ago we were best friends,” No’sh ran through the streets following Niko.

“I guess it didn’t end well,” Niko was focused on finding Zoe again and was barely paying attention.

The green fox looked around wondering why they weren’t being shot at, “You could say that…”

A shot rang out and clipped the tip of No’sh’s tail.

“Tell me later, I gotta get to Zoe before something happens,” Niko picked up speed leaving No’sh struggling to keep up.

“Man,” No’sh stopped trying, “I should really cut back on smoking…”

“It couldn’t hurt, Norby,” No’sh stiffened as he heard the voice from behind him and turned only to come face to face with a gun barrel.

“Aww, fuck me…” No’sh’s tail drooped.

“Maybe later Norby,” Droz slammed the butt of his gun into the green fox’s abdomen knocking the wind out of him.

Niko found himself in the parking lot of the clinic. It took him a moment to realize that the entire time he had been running there hadn’t been a shot fired.

“It can’t be this easy,” the white fox said as he looked at the clinic and didn’t see anything strange, “Right No’sh?”

There was no response.

“No’sh?” Niko turned looking for his companion, “Where’d you go?”

“I’m sure he’ll show up eventually, Missster Foxxglove,” a shudder ran down Niko’s back and his fur stood on end at that hissing voice.

Walking from the front door of the clinic was tall reptile, his scales as white as bone, his eyes as red as blood, arms and legs so lanky they seemed to be an afterthought by whatever being had created him.

“Y-you,” Niko stammered as he felt panic running through him, “I-I-I thought you were just a nightmare…”

The reptile let out another his hearing the fear in the fox’s voice, “I am more then a nightmare, Misster Foxxglove,” his tongue snaked out tasting that fear and a hood flared open around his head.

Niko could feel the urge to run biting at the back of his head but also his anger driving him forward, “What did you do with Zoe?”

“If you can beat me you will see,” the blind snake struck with blinding speed, sending Niko flying back.

“That’s not what the other guy said,” Niko staggered to his feet, “He said that if we made it here then I’d get to see Zoe and nothing would happen.”

The snake began to laugh a creepy hissing laugh as he stared at Niko with his blind eyes.

“Do I look like that cat to you?” the snake struck again sending Niko sailing into a parked car.

A growl came from Niko as he staggered to his feet and glared at the snake with eyes burning with rage.

“Get the hell out of the way you freak!” Niko attacked the snake only to be countered at every move before being sent sliding away with a strike to the chest.

“You are so pathetic, Missster Foxxglove,” the snake stood glaring at Niko with his blind eyes, “If you don’t fight like you mean it, I’ll go after your mate.”

Niko let out another growl, “If you so much as bring up Zoe again, I’ll rip you apart!”

“Yesss, please do, Missster Foxxglove,” the snake entered a fighting stance and smiled, “Zoe will be a delicious meal after I kill you.”

Something in Niko snapped and his eyes began to glow red as he fell to all fours and lunged at the snake.

The snake’s tongue flicked out moments before his arm did and closed around Niko’s neck.

“Yess, that’s exactly what I wanted,” the snake laughed as he tightened his grip on his prey, “Show me the rage of the beast!”

Niko sank his claws and teeth into the snake’s arm drawing blood.

“Such wild untamed aggression,” the snake laughed as he slammed Niko to the street and stared into his red eyes, “You are far from what you once were.”

Niko yelped in pain and felt everything going dark, as he was unable to look away from the snake eyes.

“Did I miss anything, Frankie?” Zoe walked back to her seat.

“Not really,” Frankie looked up from some paperwork and then looked around the waiting room, “there was some blind guy here, but I guess he left…”

At that moment there was a loud crash and an unconscious fox came flying through the front door.

“Oh my god, Niko!” Zoe ran over to the battered form and recognized it was Niko, “What happened to you?”

“Don’t touch him Z,” Frankie grabbed hold of the mink, “You don’t know how bad he’s hurt.”

“B-but, I can’t just let him lie there,” Zoe strained against Frankie’s grip.

“I’m not asking you to,” Frankie pushed Zoe towards the back, “go get Dr. Lupis, if you wanna help.”

“R-right…” the mink ran to the back to get Nick as Frankie kneeled over the fox.
