Jody:
The first time I was nominated, it was for playing a slut in "The Wahoo Project." [laughter and applause] During that awards season, I was visibly pregnant. [laughter] I'm at this luncheon that they have for the nominees, and I'm directed to the room where the other Best Actress nominees are. And before I start walking, somebody walks up to me and says "Jody. Lauren Bacall's in there, and says she wants to meet you." I say, "What? Fuck yeah!" [laughter]
So I walked fast, not running so my baby doesn't die. [shows how she walked, audience laughs] And I'm in the room, and I couldn't believe my eyes. It was The Look! It didn't hit me until that point that I was competing with her. You know she's from the golden age of cinema, where nobody on screen said the word "shit." [laughter] Well you've seen all my work prior to Wahoo, so I was afraid, but she said some very nice things. "Jody, you're a very funny and talented young woman. I hope that I can see you do more movies and stand-up." I said, "Wow, thanks Betty." [laughter]
Standing beside her, I don't know the nicest way to say this... some deaf girl from Japan. [laughter and "ohhhhs"] Girls, lighten the fuck up or you're not gonna make it to the end of this show. [laughter] Just lighten the fuck up. She won. You already know what happened. Not a lot saw that movie, but she deserved it. It was the first foreign movie to win best picture. We all thought Lauren would win, but Maki came and karate swept Lauren under her legs! [laughter]
I can tell you that Maki was very nice to us. It was her first movie but she acted that part so sensitively. She didn't go over-the-top. She took a part of herself and portrayed a delicate little girl, hiding her feelings of self-loathing with a fake happy attitude. You could see it. I'm telling you, that's not an easy thing to act. I couldn't do that at 14.
I was very touched to see her dedicate her win to Lauren, then to me and my other nominees. She and her interpreter even congratulated me for my baby, and I signed back to her "we love you" ["awww"]. But I wasn't only just touched by that part, I was touched that she actually saw a movie where Jody slaps a tampon on a window. [laughter]
After the show, we're back stage, and Dave and I congratulate her. We gave her our thanks, and then I let her feel my pregnant belly. ["awwww"] She felt it for like 30 seconds then I whispered in her ear, "Bitch, are you trying to jinx me?" [laughter and applause] I'm just kidding, I didn't say that.
