A Tragic Tale of Beasts and Blood It was a peaceful day in the fields of Kanto; The sun was shining, a light breeze was blowing, and not a single cloud dotted the sky. A group of local Rattata had decided to take advantage of these perfect condition, and went to frolic in the open fields. No clouds meant they would easily be able to spot any Spearow or Fearow, and the breeze would help them to detect other potential predators. Which meant they could devote most of their time to simply basking in warmth of the afternoon sun. Things were calm, and everything was right with the world... Until reality as they knew it was literally torn apart. Despite the lack of clouds and time of day, the sky suddenly turned dark as night. Space seemed to bend and fold in on itself, forming a basin in the air itself. Rings of multicolored light formed around the edges of the basin and cascaded inward, creating a sort of tunnel into the void. The Rattata were all mesmerized by the wondrous and seemingly impossible spectacle, having never seen anything like it before. As if that weren't strange enough, something began to descend from the portal, slowly floating down towards the field below. As the object drew closer, the Rattata were all able to make out details about its appearance. At first the thing appeared to be a sickly white flower, but upon closer inspection they noticed instead of petals, long wriggling tendrils sprouted from it stem. Which brought up its most striking feature... This thing was no mere object; This thing was alive! And even though Pokemon came in all different shapes and sized, somehow they could tell that there was something foreign about this entity. Something just felt off and wrong about its presence here. But still the pack watched as the bizarre creature continued to float down, landing safely in the middle of the bewildered rodents. At first the Rattata all just stood in shock; Locked in place by a mixture of curiosity, fear, and disbelief as they beheld the alien creature before them. However this silence was quickly shattered when the unknown creature unleashed an otherworldly roar. Its tentacles lashed out, coiling around the nearest group of Rattata and hoisting them high into the air. Shocked from their stupor by their sudden predicament, the helpless captives began to squeal and squirm frantically, desperately trying to break free from their bonds. But it was no use, they were no match for the strength of the alien tendrils. And while its victims struggled, the monster prepared its next, even more distressing move. From its center more tentacles emerged, but these ones looked far more menacing than the simple appendages used to ensnare its catch. These new ones possessed sharp stinger-like tips, making them appear downright sinister. Each of the new tendrils moved towards one of the trapped Rattata, positioning themselves just a short distance from the prisoners' flanks. For a brief moment the sinister tentacles just hovered there, as if to build dramatic tension... Suddenly, the sharp tipped tendrils shot forward, each embedding themselves into their respective victims' flanks. The hapless Rattata all cried out in agony and shed tears of anguish as white hot stabbing pain shooting up their spines. It was a nightmarish scene in its own rite, but it was only a precursor for the true horror to follow. An audible squelching sound filled the air and the captives' struggles intensified further as sizable bulges were drawn from the poor rodents and sucked down the tentacles' hungry lengths. The realization of what these bulges were caused several of the spectators to grasp in horror. This creature was feasting upon their blood, feeding off them like some kind of monstrous leech! That should have been the others' cue to run, to flee the horrifying scene. But they did not budge, frozen by terror and indecision like a Deerling in headlights. The victims' struggles quickly died down as the life force was drained from them. Their bodies withered and shriveled, deprived of vital nutrients by the voracious monster. It wasn't long before each of the Rattata breathed their last, casting a morbid silence over the field. Having completely drained their victims of all life giving fluids, the blood sucking tendrils unceremoniously ripped themselves from their victims, and the lifeless corpses were released, allowing them to plummet to the ground below. The horribly emaciated bodies landed among the petrified pack, giving them all a clear view of the horrifying effects of the creature's treatment. This was the straw that finally shook them from their terror induced trance; The pack scattered in every direction hoping to avoid a similar fate. But it was far too late for that. Tendrils shot out in every direction, snatching up any Rattata unfortunate enough to be in their path. Squeals of panic and pain filled the air as the scene erupted into utter chaos. One such pair of mates had been right at ground zero, but by some fortune had been spared the initial selection. Like the others, they turned and ran, desperate to escape the alien horror. Acting on instinct, they joined a small group of stampeding Rattata as they fled. Every few moments a tentacle would come down, plucking another unfortunate soul for the creature's unholy feast. There were a couple of close calls for the duo, one Rattata even being snatched up from right in front of them. It was heart wrenching to see, but now was not the time to mourn for the victims; Survival was their first priority. However their odds of surviving were quickly dwindling as the pack began to thin out. Every time they heard the forlorn cry of another packmate, they thanked Arceus that it wasn't them. Just a little longer! Their salvation was within view, a bush that would surely hide them from the ravenous monster's gaze. Spurred by hope, the female put every last bit of effort into her final dash, pulling slightly ahead of her mate. They were going to make! They were so close!... But just when it seemed they would escape this wretched nightmare, a distressed squeal caught the female's attention, and she turned back to find a sight that made her heart sink in despair. One of the monster's tentacles had wrapped itself firmly around her mate, a surefire death sentence. The poor Rattata was digging his claws into the ground as the tendril lazily pulled him towards his doom. Without a second thought, the female jumped in, grabbing her mate's paws in her own, and trying desperately to pull him free. She held on tight, refusing to let her mate be taken by the monster. But in doing so, she had only sealed her own fate; Another tendril shot forth and quickly wrapped around her torso, dooming the poor rodent. Bone chilling terror ran down her spine as she realized she had given up her only chance at escape and would soon be sharing the same grizzly fate as her kin. They were both hoisted in the air, still desperately clutching each other's paws. The tortured squeals of their dying packmates assaulted their ears, filling them with dread. With each silenced voice, their terror grew, knowing that their turn would soon be upon them. Time seemed to slow to a crawl as adrenaline pumped through their systems, fueling their panic and sharpening their senses. They could hear every anguished cry, every sickening slurp, giving them a preview of the horrors that awaited them. They gazed into each other's eyes, searching for even the slightest hint of comfort or reassurance, but finding only fear and despair. They continued to stare at each other, refusing to look at the horrific sights surrounding them... That was until the female's gaze suddenly shifted skyward, her pupils shrinking in abject terror. The male could practically see it reflected in her eyes, a spiked tendril hovering just above his tender flank. His body tensed in apprehension of the oncoming strike. In one swift motion the spined tentacle shot forth, sinking deep into the helpless male's side. He cried out as he experience pain unlike anything he could have imagined. The female could see and feel his body tremble from shock and untold agony. In that short moment she forgot about her own peril, and was overcome with grief. It tore her heart out to see her mate in so much pain, and she wished more than anything that she could help him. But she was powerless; There was nothing she could do except shed tears of sorrow as she witnessed her mate's agonizingly slow demise. She watched him clench his eyes and grit his teeth, trying futilely to cope with the pain radiating from his flank. The female was overcome with a wave of horrified disgust as the tendril began to quiver and pulse, leeching wave after wave of precious crimson fluid from her mate. Every slurp drew a squeak of distress from the poor Rattata, and each one brought fresh tears to the female's eyes as she was force to listen to her loved one suffer. She didn't want to see nor hear anymore, but at the same time was unable to look away. She gripped his paws firmly, trying to offer what little comfort she could to the tormented rodent. His condition only grew worse as the life was slowly drained from him. She could feel his paws losing weight and see his features growing haggard and gaunt, making him look as though he hadn't eaten in weeks. She watched in nauseated horror as the color drain from his face and body, leaving him a sickly pail hue. His frantic squeals grew weaker and weaker until they were reduced to nothing but pitiful wheezes. He was too weak to voice it, but the tortured expression on his sunken cheeks still reflected the depths of his agony. With the last of his strength, he peeled his eyes open, getting one final look at his terrified mate. Through his pain and sorrow he felt a pang of guilt. If he hadn't been caught, then she wouldn't be here, forced to share in his horrific demise. With a final plea to Arceus that he might spare her this awful fate, he breathed his final breath and collapsed. The female felt his paws go limp in her grasp, watching with utter despair as his hind legs and tail dangled lifelessly in the monster's grip. She could hardly believe it; Her mind refused to accept it. This had to be some kind of nightmare. There was no way he was gone, and that this withered husk was all that remained of her love. With a sickening sputter like a straw at the end of a delicious beverage, the tendril sucked up the last few drops of blood from the dead Rattata before removing itself from his flank and releasing the lifeless rodent. But the female refused to let go, hanging onto the drained corpse with all her might. She looked down at the emaciated form with tear filled eyes, struggling to accept the reality of her situation. So distraught was she, that she failed to notice the spined tendril reposition itself near her flank. Without sympathy or mercy, the sharp tip plunged into her side, only seeking to feed its seemingly boundless hunger. The Rattata's eyes grew wide, and she shrieked in agony, the sudden shock causing her to release her grip on her mate. Her face twisted in anguish as she tried to endure the stabbing pain coming from her side. It was unbearable; She was convinced that no torture could be worse than this... and then the tendril started to suck... It hurt! Oh dear Arceus, it hurt so much! Was this what it had been like for him? This was agony! She squealed and thrashed about wildly, driven by desperation and pain. But with each passing moment she grew weaker and weaker. She felt cold, like the very warmth was being sapped from her body; She felt tired, like all of her energy was being leeched away; But most frightening of all, she felt numb, the unpleasant tingle of pins and needles spreading through her system as she was deprived of blood. It wasn't long until her drained body hung limply in the monster's grasp, the icy embrace of death creeping in around her. She closed her eyes, waiting for oblivion to take her... But something changed. The suction in her side unexpectedly stopped as the tendril violently and painfully tore itself from her flank. Her body jerked from the shock, but she only had the strength to whine pitifully in response. Then the grip around her loosened and for a brief moment she felt the sensation of falling. Another jolt of pain shot through her as her weakened body crashed against the harsh unforgiving landscape below. She groaned miserably, fresh pain wracking her battered body. Why was she still alive?... Had the creature finally had its fill? Had is sensed danger, and fled? Or was it simply that cruel, and wanted to see her suffer? She would never know. But whatever the reason, she had been discarded, doomed to spend her final moments languishing away on the cold hard ground. Her eyes opened weakly, straining to see the world around her. Her vision focused just enough for her to make out her mate's body lying a few feet from her own. With all the strength she could muster, she dug her claws into the soil, desperately dragging her decrepit body through the dirt. It was like crawling through the very depths of hell; The emaciated bodies of her deceased packmates littered the ground around her, and the stench of blood hang heavily in the air. She was weak and in pain, her entire body trembling violently with each exertion. But she refused to give in, pushing forward through shear force of will. It took several agonizing minutes, but she finally managed to reached her goal. She took one last look at her mate's sunken face; He seemed so peaceful now, no longer tormented by pain nor grief. She nuzzled her boney cheek against his own, shedding what little tears she had left as she lamented their tragic fate. Her eyes closed and her breathing slowed, the remainder of her life starting to slipping away. And there she remained, pitifully clinging to her mate's lifeless corpse, silently awaiting her own inevitable demise; They would be together again soon.
