Some had top of the line rackets and highly responsive sneakers from the old name brands, but others came with minimal products, whatever they could get their hands on.\n\nA pangolin stood at the end of the locker room guiding everyone down the rows until each stood before a locker. “OK, contestants, I'm coach Willis. You have all earned your place here from among your local communities. But your communities have not all come through the revolution with the same fortunes. Now, you will be playing for our state to determined who gets to go to nationals, and in our new Clovic nation we strive to provide equality. \n\n“An overhaul like this takes time and comes in many parts so we haven't gotten to all of you yet. Your ranking in this championship will help determine which community sports centers we overhaul first.”\n\nA hand rose from a bobcat contestant. She waited till she was called on with a ‘Yes, Stacy?’ from the pangolin coach. “Um, how do we open these lockers? This is all pretty new to all of us and I'm used to dealing with older students. Here at the university, we have a new locker system, it uses networked vector gates. Some of you might have used these before, but I'm betting its new to most of you. So, reach out with your hand to the locker plate, about an inch or two away would be best for your first time. Then think of it opening like a window.”\n\nAs the contestants all reached out one vixen commented, “My dad invented these.” Willis chirped back, “Now is no time for boasting, Orphelia. Just get those lockers open and put away all your clothes and equipment. New ones will be assigned or selected from the committee for equality. And for any worshipers of Tarmile, your rackets have already been blessed for performance in his name. Uniforms are also available conforming to each demonic standard, so stow everything you brought, even what you are wearing.”\n\nAs they focused a spiral of light emerged from each locker plate. The spiral widened and flattened out forming a clean edge with only a few millimeters between each locker. Where the plate had been now was only a thin shimmering film.\n\n“As you place your items in the vector gate they will hover in place. These lockers can hold a near-infinite amount of stuff as long as it fits through the opening. You can access your vector gate from any locker plate on campus.” Willis lifted his left arm and gestured over the wrist with his right hand. A portal matching those of the lockers opened in the air. He turned it for everyone to see his shelves of itemized supplies. “If your stuff is disorganized or too far to easily reach, then just put your hand in and think of the item you want. It should float over to you soon enough.” Demonstrating, he reached in and a towel floated off the racks into his hand. He then reversed the process to return the towel. “It may be easier for now if you open your packs and let everything spill out. The items will loosely congregate into a center point on their own.”\n\nAs he spoke some of the contestants played around with the lockers, sticking their arms through and waving them where another locker should have been, or tossing items in so they would collide and float away before calling the item to hand with their thoughts. Booths lined one wall while the rest of the court was divided into long rectangles by tape on the floor. “As your names are called go to the first booth to claim your uniform. From the other booths select your equipment.
