Chapter 40
A Plethora of Engagements
The morning after Michael and Amanda met Consuelo, Jonathan woke up enjoying the warmth
of a nude female body lying next to him. He opened his eyes and looked at the brown-and-white
swirl colored bear sleeping so peacefully. He rolled onto his side, propped himself up on his left
elbow, and just watched her. As he watched Bertha sleeping, he thought about giving her a quick
kiss to see if he could awaken her. Unfortunately, before he could follow through with this idea,
Bertha’s eye fluttered open. She stretched languidly and turned her head toward him.
“What are you doing?” She asked with a smile.
“Watching the most beautiful woman I know sleeping.”
“Really? I thought you were looking at me.” Jonathan raised his eyebrows in answer to her
statement. “Really, Jonathan. Why do you say I’m beautiful. I’m 14 years older than you, I’ve
been married and divorced, and I’ve got four cubs, one of whom has never met her father and
probably never will. For about a year, until I got pregnant with Kaunis, my youngest, I spent my
weekends at different bars and I’d sleep with any guy who showed any kind of interest in me.
How can you even remotely think I’m beautiful?”
“Because you are, Bertha. You are beautiful physically and beauty is more than physical. What
you did before we met isn’t important to me; what’s important is how you treat me when we’re
alone together. Of course, there’s also the fact that you’re a fantastic lover and I don’t regret one
second of the times we’ve made love.”
