Though the name "Esmerelda" has been used most commonly as a
reference to the word "Emerald" in recent times, its historical value
and deeper connections with various peoples of the distant past is what
makes it befitting of this witch.
Beyond the "Emerald" in which the name defines, Esmeralda is rooted
deeply via folklore and the like to the existence of the Gypsies of the past,
their own bloodlines rooted even more-so to the Romani peoples as a
whole. Oddly enough, the term "Gypsy" came from the false belief that
the original Romani settlers originated from the Egyptian line.
Such information aside, not only were Gypsies given false origins, their
history is one and the same with Witch culture revolving their persecution
and near universal mistreatment and shunning regardless of location,
with tales spread of their supposed "wicked" ways and the methods in
which they may use to mistreat others and take from them.
On top of this, Gypsies and Witches alike, despite how lands neglected
them, were often used for their abilities for the sake and betterment of the
very people which caused them to live such difficult lives. Pushed into
slavery in service of those who looked down on them, and spirited off to
war-fronts to defend the very lands which refused to allow them to call home.
When you consider this harsh, and lengthy, history of neglect toward their
kind, one should consider it of little surprise that both Witches and Gypsies
alike would come to hold grudges and skepticism toward others, nor' should
it be a shock that their actions would come to revolve the very stories told of
their kind, not out of willingness per-se, but more-so necessity to survive.
Hunt others before they hunt you, take before you are taken, leave no roots
to track, an existence little more than an enigma thriving on the winds of tall
tales and the fear of the unknown. The name "Esmerelda" encompasses
perfectly the danger of lies and the threat in which they may pose, toward
those lied about, and the vengeful potential in response to those persecuted.
It's no wonder then as to why the Hatterene line loathes those who hold too
much on their minds, as busybody types have a bad habit of sticking their
noses where they don't belong. Such people often harbor thoughts and opinions
of others they've no business labeling, and can fill themselves with discontent,
even ill will toward those who they don't understand, be it a result of envy,
societal differences, etc.
In the end, Hatterene by a vast majority consider themselves non-conformists,
refusing to have much if anything to do with society, and to those foolhardy
enough to capture one of their kin in the present day, the abuse a Hatterene
forces upon their captors makes the potential benefits of their powers less than
worth the pain they'll inflict consistently, winding up released by those who failed
to do their research and merely assumed they would submit to the "right type"
of human, with such being fairly nonexistent.
On the topic of Hatterene being non-conformist, one shouldn't be surprised by
the "assets" they harbor beneath the gown of lengthy locks which typically shroud
their physiques. With their "hair" in general being a sign of their power, in the past
Witches would find themselves shaved head to toe by their persecutors to strip
them of said power, leaving Witches preferring death itself over the loss of that which
represents who and what they are and gives them their very way of life.
This in mind... Abuse will be paradise to those who attempt to remove a single lock
from a Hatterene's body. Regardless of whether it was via force or request, both
will be met with the same traumatizing experience, leaving those who weren't already
wary of their kind permanently horrified by the mere mention of their name. If by
some miracle a human is fortunate enough to win their favor, requesting anything
revolving removal of their follicles will have that person sent through the same hellish
experience their kin would give to any stranger, with their favor permanently lost.
