"writing": "While he had a successful morning on his first day, that was really about all the luck he'd had as far as finding the Hero. It really seemed, no matter how much he looked, everyone was being rewarded for something they did because of just how badly the world got fucked over. He really wanted to know more about it, but if his mom's advisors knew he got any information from anyone but their target he'd probably have to do more remedial shit... He grumbled in annoyance, but shoved it away. Now wasn't the time.\n\nHe was on his fourth day now... And at least last night had been merciful. No nightmares. And his assistant didn't flip at the fact he got a music player now, nor did he inquire about his music tastes. Yesterday had been... well, useless. The weather turned to snow for the day, and as much as he wanted to use each early day as he could, he couldn't risk frostbite. He just couldn't go out in his dress whites. Even if he was held at gunpoint, he'd argue cold feet were better to deal with than the stiff dress shoes his full uniform carried. So he spent the day inside the hotel.\n\nAnd boy, did he learn a thing or two...\n\n---\n\nThe hotel lobby had a rack of magazines available for viewing by the public, and he'd taken a couple that looked interesting while he'd waited for lunch to get ready. Some covered metal, others covered the latest innovations in technology, and there was also one featuring athletes and swimsuits.\n\nIf talking to that bouncer hadn't affirmed his attraction was squarely with male humans, now he was absolutely certain. How had he been missing out on this knowledge for so long?! Some of the barely clothed athletes were downright delightful, with lightly carved muscles. Some were even oiled up for the shots, giving their skin a glisten that fur just couldn't match. And fuck, some of the guys had really tight underwear, leaving very little to the imagination...\n\nWhich his imagination definitely did things to him then, and it made him glad he was wearing pants... He remembered the assistant being concerned he was running a fever, until he'd caught the cover and gave him a look that while could have been disgust at his preferences, he knew the old man was just more irritated he was fantasizing in public.\n\n``May the gods help us if you do entice a human male to visit your penthouse...'' he'd said, and boy that did NOT help! He'd nearly thrown the booklet at his face before hurrying to his room as his mind and hand did the rest.\n\nAfter that incident, he decided to focus on his puzzle for the evening, while using a city map he'd managed to get printed for him. At least this would give him something productive to do rather than purely personal.\n\nWith the snow falling outside his window, Manic sat as close to it as he could while he had the wooden tower on a stand. It swiveled on its base, allowing him to look at all four sides without moving around, which made things easier. He pulled out the slip of paper which had all of his notes on it - notes specifically about the puzzle, since he had no way to record himself doing anything - and went over them again. ``No difference on any o' th' edges... magnet in bottom right opened `ese four panels `ere... Each panel's got a number in it... one, four, six, seven...'' But what did those numbers mean? He couldn't see any other numbers on the tower, and there wasn't any element that looked the same distributed in that fashion. There didn't seem to be any true order to the numbers, either. ``Maybe... maybe I gotta count different things?'' he frowned. But what could he even see there was only one of on this thing?\n\nWith a pencil and paper in hand, he started counting every unique aspect of the tower he could see. Steps along the outside, the number of panels, the switches he'd uncovered so far... but nothing wanted to add up for him, even after two hours.\n\nGrumbling, he'd given the opened panel a poke, surprised when it had actually moved with a solid click. ``Wait... more switches?''\n\nWith a curious finger, he'd begun pushing each panel the number of times it read, and each had clicked after that many presses. Another click sounded, and Manic began eagerly pushing and tugging at each section until he finally felt the top piece come off. ``Fuck yeah!!''\n\nThe rest of that evening had been a lot of fiddling with the top piece, as it seemed to be some sort of massive key. But how it unlocked the rest, he wasn't sure... Still, he'd take the progress!\n\n---\n\nThankfully, today was not as cold, and he was able to get out and enjoy the lack of blustering winds. The city looked so pretty with the light dusting of snow still present... It was melting fast and would be gone by the evening, but that didn't matter. After studying the town map, he now had some places he could check. One of the cooler areas was a housing complex nearby, as well as a sort of tourist shop for Green Hill - it had been a pretty popular area but had been apparently wrecked during the war and needed some work done. The proceeds all went to restoring it, and so far it was apparently on its way to normal.\n\nStill, that was a way's off.\n\nTrue to his plan, the next stop was a small store. One of the biggest things for any town was to check the best place to shop. And even still, most sapient heavy cities didn't have supermarkets, making for a rather quiet and easy experience. While the hotel would cover food, there was nothing wrong with hitting up a grocery store or other areas for small snacks, so he had a snack allowance of sorts he could also use. Thank the gods, he would hate only eating when the hotel offered food.\n\nBut more importantly, he didn't want to just ask the working clerk without buying anything. He was raised better than that, and would at least put his money to good use in the process.\n\nThe shop was surprisingly well stocked, and there were a handful of people grabbing vegetables that had been brought from a nearby greenhouse. Another section had fresh bread that had just been delivered that morning, and there was a decently sized section of refrigerated drinks and sandwiches. In his browsing, he almost managed to bump into a very tall figure, but thankfully he either didn't or the other didn't care.\n\nAs much as he'd have loved to pile his cart, he just wanted a few. A couple cold sandwiches, some hard-boiled eggs, and some lunchmeat he could slap on a piece of bread would suffice. As he walked around, he kept catching glimpses of the large figure, and while part of him felt strangely uneasy, another part was... intrigued. The man was clearly a human, if rather fat, judging by the way he walked with rather long legs. No sapient had a build like that... And wait, was he... barefoot? Nah, it couldn't be. Maybe it was just light coloring on his shoes.\n\nGah, he had to get a grip! He wasn't here to `window shop' for a hookup. After some more looking, he got a couple cans of Chaos Cola and headed to the register, surprised when the human was also in line right in front of him. It wasn't like a bad line, and he could hear the customers in front chatting with each other. Ah, the peace of people who weren't in a hurry to do anything... He idly stretched and adjusted his basket, glancing back and forth to see if there was anything else he'd want, before he actually looked ahead and let his curiosity answer his question.\n\nOh. Sweet. Chaos...\n\nManic had to bite his lip to keep the gasp from escaping when he actually took in the figure in front of him. He was tall even for a human. He had to be almost twice his height... The coat was sleek with a high collar at the back, black with red trim, but best and worst of all... the bottom half of his outfit was to die for. Manic thought he'd never see a human barefoot in this city, at this time, but here this man had stirrups! And he looked like he wasn't even cold at all...\n\nAnd by the gods, his feet were long... Long enough that it could probably cover his torso - sweet mercy, he was down bad. It was almost a blessing there were pretty much no humans in Mobotropolis, even still. If he had to deal with this on a regular basis, he was fucked!\n\nThe `cha-ching!' of the register thankfully broke him out of his stupor, grateful for the fact no one was looking at him being a pervert. His face burned so bright, but he just had to get through this line and... not stare at that huge ass or big feet. He could do this.\n\nThough one thing that was odd... the clerk seemed almost... too neutral. It was almost as if he was only being polite to the big guy because he had to, rather than typical customer service friendliness. It was really weird, since he'd been talking a bit more animatedly to the customers in front of him.\n\nWhen he left, Manic let out a breath he didn't know he was holding, smiling at the goat at the counter.\n\n``Howdy! What's a well-dressed stranger doing in this little shop?'' the goat seemed to resume his more polite tone, causing Manic to blink. Was there personal beef going on??\n\n``Oh, uh, looking fer a mystery man I'm tryna interview... Any clues on a `Hero of Mobius' `at lives near here?'' he asked, while carefully sliding his basket up. The older male pursed his lips for a moment, opening as if to speak, but shut it again before shaking his head.\n\n``Can't say I do, partner. He let you set up an interview but didn't tell you where he is?'' Manic could understand that being the goat's line of thinking, as it was odd. But...\n\n``Well, he was supposed t' mail us last month buuuuut he didn't. Deadline's coming up so they sent me out early t' see if I can track `im down...'' He sighed. ``Well, thanks anyways. But hey, what's witta human guy? Som'm up?'' The clerk paused for a good moment, staring hard as if in disbelief. Was he really that out of the loop? He barely knew anyone out this way. ``Been kinda closed off, so my knowledge is zip.''\n\nThere was another beat of silence before the goat resumed and started to pack. \n\n``Doctor Eggman. He's... something. And that artificial intelligence daughter of his creeps me out with how she never blinks... Just a word of advice, don't go messing with him unless you have a really good reason.'' \n\nWith that vague tip, Manic could only nod and give over some money, walking out and insisting he keep the change for his help. Scribbling in his notepad, he sighed again. No leads from the clerk, which is not good. But now I'm curious on this Eggman. Who is he, and why does the clerk not like him? Also why was he just... sporting the things that made him so hot under the collar?\n\nOn that note... AI Daughter? Did he have someone else with him and he just never noticed? With bag in hand, he looked down both sides of the street, and once more saw that tall drink of water walking down the sidewalk, not even flinching from the cold. Gods, why was he this lucky... ``Knock it off, Manic...'' he whispered to himself, before looking at the human's shoulder. Indeed, there was a small human-like girl, but her body flickered and broke into particles of light in areas as she moved about - well, floated.\n\nThey seemed to be talking about something, as he could see her mouth move, but they were too far away for him to really hear, and only getting further. As much as he wanted to follow, that was just hella rude. He had his own direction to go to...\n\nBut when they rounded the corner, fading out of sight, the laugh he heard sent the weirdest wave of heat and cold straight through him.\n\n``Whathefuck...'' he muttered quickly under his breath, actually clenching his arms to himself. Why did that noise both scare AND arouse him? \n\nShaking his head quickly, he decided to bolt for the hotel and get his thoughts together... It wasn't likely he'd ever see that man again anyways, but then again, the way the clerk talked, clearly he was shopping semi-regularly...\n\n---\n\nThe rest of his afternoon was spent chasing more leads, all of which led to dead ends. He'd even taken to asking about Miles Prower - curiously, he went by Tails according to some folks - but no one could recall hearing anything about him being called a `Hero of Earth' or even mentioning an interview with the Royal Family. That was the most frustrating part.\n\nOne would really think that if someone found out they were being interviewed by a king, queen, prince, princess, whatever... they'd be talking about it way more! Either this hero was one humble piece of work, or he was actually dreading this interview and keeping it a secret... Or he probably didn't want the combined attention to attract a paparazzi. That had to be the reason. There was no way someone would accept an interview if they didn't want to do it. Even a `world-famous' hero that didn't have a title.\n\nThe hours were long, and he had to make sure to stop inside a building to warm back up, often chatting with whoever was working the booth or counter. It seemed people were becoming a bit more aware, too, as more tended to wave at him. Compared to the first two days when everyone was doing double-takes, it was... nice. People here knew there was a prince among them, but didn't make a move to rush him or make it a big deal.\n\nYeah, he was doing this right.\n\n---\n\nManic had really not expected to run into the human again, at least not in the same day. But he'd been told there was an excellent view to enjoy from the Sunset Heights district, hence its name. He enjoyed the view from his hotel, but apparently this place was downright beautiful if one got to the overlook. The temperature was dropping with each hour the sun sank in the sky, but even when his assistant pleaded with him to put on some loafers, Manic insisted on walking there his way. As long as he kept moving, he'd be alright. The concrete was barely lukewarm thanks to all the sun from the day, so that'd give him a couple hours at least.\n\nHe'd noticed someone else already there, but hadn't realized it was the human of his attention until he hit the top steps. Gods... especially now, that back silhouette was breathtaking, the way his one leg was crossed, giving him a fantastic view of his sole. He had to bite his lip and look away, instead looking over the fence, his lip coming back open as he beheld exactly what they were talking about. It looked like a sea of amber, the way the setting sun reflected off of the roofs, but not so badly that it'd hurt his eyes. It was like looking at gems from above, and apparently if one visited on the solstice, it would line up with the large arch at the end of the district. Of course, most people wouldn't come out at this temperature, and he definitely felt it in his toes, but it wasn't like the weather would get any better for sunsets.\n\n``Wow...'' he whispered, the sight distracting him long enough that he hadn't noticed the odd girl floating toward him.\n\n``Excuse me,'' her voice, flat but strangely full of curiosity, made him turn about. ``I noticed you earlier today. Do you have business with my father...?''\n\nIn an instant, Manic's face felt like it glowing just as bad as the roofs, and he shook his head. ``N-No no, sorry! I was told bout`is view. Didn't know ya'd be up here. D-Do I need t' leave?'' He held up his hands in a sign of surrender, gulping when she didn't respond for a moment. ``...Was I tha' obvious looking at `is feet...?'' Gods, he really hoped she wasn't pissed at him for ogling! He didn't regret it, but he didn't want to anger the guy's `daughter' if she was protective of him...\n\n``Wait... That voice,'' the human suddenly spoke, and Manic barely had time to register why did that voice scare him when he turned around. ``Manic?!''\n\nA gasp tore itself out of his throat, his head snapping up as he noticed the all too familiar pink nose and huge mustache belonging to only one person. The chill of the cement and the winter air was forgotten as the most unrelenting chill dropped in his stomach. His legs shook in a tense backwards descent, but his chest felt so tight. It was almost hard to breathe, as he didn't even realize he'd started hyperventilating. No. This. This couldn't be real. It was impossible! He died! Robotnik was dead! How was he standing there?! He... He had to move. He had to get away! He... He didn't know what was going on anymore, just that his body had to move. Run. He had to run. Danger.\n\nSWATBots... he could still remember their pounding footsteps as that voice... that fucking voice... rang out everywhere. Commercials, radio, special programs... calls for bounties on their heads. Running through the sewers with the armies around every corner. He felt like he was eight years old again, but this time, no medallion to help him. No way to fight. All he could do was get away. Away from that evil, that maniacal smirk that taunted his dreams. The face of evil, of pure greed and hatred, who put a bounty on their heads as babies. Babies!! \n\nHe was wheezing now, despite not even getting very far, the buildings having turned into a blur as his mind put him back in Robotropolis. All the running, all the fighting... He felt defenseless, relying on all his past instincts as he swung himself over a dumpster. The image of Farrell, roboticized and part of Robotnik's army, blared in his vision like a bright light. Robotnik's cruel smile from their close encounters was like a nightmare in itself, a whimper escaping as fear set in his bones. A man who wanted him gone was literally in walking range, and he had nothing to protect himself. His head... his head was swimming. He was so dizzy... He had to...\n\nHis body locked up as he fell to his knees, violently spewing the contents of his breakfast and lunch, making his mouth and nose tingle. ``Fffuuuhhhck...'' His vision blurred more, like he was swimming: was he crying? He couldn't tell if he was on the ground or against a wall, and it was just... so cold... His quills bristled, he couldn't even get his legs to move... He couldn't curl up... His feet hurt now. Everything hurt. Did he fall? He barely even noticed the colors swirling around him, everything seemed so dark now...\n\n---\n\nEggman was so damn tired... He could literally feel the exhaustion lingering in his bones from the absolute mess he'd had to endure the last few months. Sleep just hadn't been coming to him as readily, as he'd been working so tirelessly to try and locate the Chaos Emeralds once more. They had five, but that was it... Running calculations and scanning the world for any unusual phenomena was always the plan, but it took forever.\n\nIt was a damn good thing he'd installed security, just to make sure all was well when he was away. And Sage, bless her digital heart... If it wasn't for her, he wasn't sure if he'd been able to act as quickly. To think things had gotten this bad in the short time he'd been away. He should have known something was wrong months ago. But now here he was, playing actual doctor to someone he'd rather be fighting.\n\nThough it was... interesting. It gave him an excuse to wear his new suit, knowing that Sonic had a thing for feet. So if he stayed barefoot, it'd at least keep him calmer, if not let his hormones distract him from the other symptoms. And despite it being winter, he didn't even feel the chill, since he had a natural temperature resistance. He could traipse naked in the scorching desert or the blustering arctic with no problem if he really wanted to.\n\nBut that didn't make things easy... It felt like each Emerald only bought him days now to fix things!\n\nHe didn't want to leave Sonic alone, but he did need groceries... At the least, simple things. Soup, bread, other light foods... Some vegetables for him, at least. The poor thing's migraines were debilitating when they happened. Luckily he had drones that could help with getting compresses and such, and luckily Metal Sonic didn't seem like he'd take advantage of the situation either. If it really came down to it, though... he'd have to get ahold of his annoying friends. But when they'd left the store, he had to laugh when Sage informed him that his outfit had gotten the attention of another sapient!\n\nThat had to have been the highlight of his day, knowing his stirrups got another guy hooked. He loved to be a tease when he could, and he would have turned around if he hadn't been in public... It brought a smile to his face, even as he felt the bags under his eyes.\n\nIt had been some hours later when Sage suggested taking a moment to look out over the city, as she had insisted a good view and some quiet moments would do him some good. The sun was in the perfect area as well, so when he made his way to the district, it had truly been a sight to see... Much as he dreamed of any place being turned into Eggmanland, the natural beauty of the area was something he could, and did, appreciate in this moment. A bit of calm amidst the chaos.\n\nWhen Sage detected the same person from before, she had been somewhat concerned, as if they were being tracked. A question he highly doubted, as he'd even said ``We are getting close to the solstice, Sage. Perhaps he's just here for the view as well,'' he'd assured. Feeling a bit showy, he made sure to cross his legs so his little mystery `stalker' could get a peek of what he liked...\n\n``Wow...'' His brow furrowed as a spark of recognition flipped in the back of his mind. That thick accent sounded... familiar. Not in a bad way, but not in a good way either. Apparently Sage took it as a sign to step in, and he could hear her asking if he had business. He fought a snort. Who would have business with him? Just because he wasn't committing crimes didn't mean he wasn't seen as a danger...\n\n``N-No no, sorry! I was told bout`is view. Didn't know ya'd be up here. D-Do I need t' leave?'' That broken city accent... He had definitely heard it before, but not quite this deep... But the tones, the inflections... ``...Was I tha' obvious looking at `is feet...?''\n\nNo. Way.\n\n``Wait... That voice...'' He instantly whirled around, as he had to. He had to confirm his suspicions, as he hadn't heard that voice in AGES. The moment he caught those green quills, his voice betrayed him before he could stop himself - not that he realized he'd spoken a bit too loudly to start with anyway. ``Manic?!''\n\nThat was a bad move. For as much as he was shocked, Manic went into full fight-or-flight mode. Those deep gray eyes were wide with fear, pupils dilated to the point they looked like black voids among the whites. The gasp told him all he needed to know, as was the way he was walking backwards. The poor thing was absolutely terrified, but who could blame him? Still, as much as he felt bad, he couldn't just leave Manic to run in such an unstable state. ``Sage, track him, quickly!''\n\nLuckily his daughter didn't even question it, her eyes locked in Manic's direction as he hurried along. ``What is that fool doing out here barefoot like that, he's not even Chaos Touched!'' he grumbled under his breath. Even Sonic wasn't that crazy! It was just a damn good thing that Manic didn't have Sonic's abilities... Even though he still had to move quickly, he didn't have problems tracking the panicked prince. Hopefully he could just get to him before he hurt himself!\n\nHe weaved through what felt like three city blocks, making his way through a couple alleys before he finally found a bundle of green and white tucked against a wall, curled up. His nose curled at the sight of the hedgehog's meal being ejected onto the ground, but there were more important things. Namely, keeping the fool from getting frostbite.\n\nWith careful hands, he hoisted the shivering male up, but frowned as he had to wonder where the hell to even go. His own hotel? No, Manic would freak out worse than that. Sonic's house - what the hell, no. Not like this. After a moment, he realized the only safe thing was to find out where Manic had come from, and hope he didn't wake up before they got there.\n\nLuckily there was a human-sized taxi service nearby, and he was able to call one down, carefully placing him into the seat. The driver looked notably concerned, but as Sage phased through, she took care of any questions he might have tried to ask.\n\n``Father, why did this individual panic upon seeing you? You spoke his name... is there some sort of past I do not have in my databanks?'' Her curiosity about things outside of Cyber Space was honestly adorable, but her questions themselves made him wince. ``It is almost as if he shows signs of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder...''\n\n``Sage... this is Prince Manic Hedgehog. You may have records of him having a twin sister, Sonia... But he is also Sonic's brother. Sonic is the oldest of the royal triplets. I haven't seen this young man since he was just ten years old... back when I had control of Mobotropolis years ago. I have to assume he probably does have PTSD... You don't... you don't know the things I used to do. He does.'' \n\nAs much as he took pride in his goals and desires, there was no small amount of repulsion for that part of himself. He could write off his change as chasing grandeur, going after gods and obscene power, but in truth... he really had softened up, a part of him realizing what he'd done in Robotropolis was... too much. Fifteen years was a lot of time to reflect.\n\nSage, to her credit, kept her surprise to just a slight widening of her eyes, but he could tell she was stunned, if not by the fact Sonic had a sibling and was actually a prince, then the fact that he'd been a worse villain in the past. With a sigh, he shifted to look at Manic more carefully now that he could. He'd really grown... His fur was healthy, his clothes were pristine save for the scuffs from where he'd fallen while vomiting, and his face... gods, he was cute. ``...He really has his mother's softness...'' he muttered, carefully brushing a wet streak.\n\n``It seems Manic has been in the area for four days, according to the hotel records I could locate,'' Sage said after a moment. ``They have a reservation lasting two weeks.'' Well, that was at least something to be grateful for. He knew Manic would definitely want answers... Sage gave the directions, and the driver was peeling rubber to get there quickly. When they pulled up, he grimaced as he pulled out the unconscious prince, making his way inside. The receptionist looked alarmed, but he held a hand up to prevent any confrontation.\n\n``He passed out at Sunset Heights. I don't exactly have slippers for him, so I couldn't leave him to get cold,'' he explained. He scrawled a quick thing on a sticky note after getting him on the couch. ``Give him this when he wakes up... Good day.'' He walked out and waved off the taxi after a quick payment, crossing his arms as he walked to his current destination. Manic was definitely going to seek him out... the poor thing, he'd looked traumatized, as if somehow witnessing a zombie rise from its grave. And as much as he liked to make people quake in fear with a drone or two, this... this felt wrong. It didn't even feel like Manic was looking at him, but rather at something else...\n\nUgh, now he had TWO hedgehog related problems. At least this one was hopefully easier.\n\n---\n\n``Ugh... My head...'' Gods, what the hell happened?? Why did he feel so damn sick? Did he get food poisoning or something...?\n\n``Manic! Prince Manic, thank the stars!'' His ears immediately flattened to his head at the loudness, but he must have made a noise that got the dog to speak quieter. He was slowly eased into a sitting position and given a small cup of water with ibuprofen, something he was very grateful for. He felt like a total wreck! ``When we heard you were brought in, we feared you may have been attacked...''\n\n``...Brought in...?'' His brow furrowed, as he realized he wasn't in his room but rather the lobby, with some other guests looking his way. Everything felt fuzzy... as if a static TV was playing near his head.\n\n``According to the receptionist, a man called Doctor Eggman had carried you in, giving her a slip of paper...''\n\nDoctor... Eggman? ``Wait... Eggman... the store... the human in front of me at the store... Yeah... he was wearing stirrups...'' He felt his cheeks warm, but if the assistant noticed, he didn't care. ``Then I...'' Sunset Heights. The girl. The mustache. It must have shown on his face, as the assistant immediately started rushing to get a bucket.\n\n``My prince! Manic, are you unwell?!''\n\nHe shook in his seat on the couch, probably turning pale as his fingers gripped the edge of the couch. ``...Robotnik...'' his voice, a strained whisper, was still enough to cause the dog's face to slowly match his. ``...Th-the guy they're callin' Eggman... It's Doctor Robotnik... I saw... I know `is face...''\n\n``...Are you certain, Manic?'' the dog looked about ready to sound an alarm, but... ``He... brought you back to this hotel...?''\n\n``Wait... he... he did?'' Manic looked at his assistant in disbelief before looking over to the receptionist, who remained oblivious to their conversation. Finding his voice, scratchy as it was... ``M-Ma'am? Did ya say... Eggman... brought me back here from Sunset Heights?'' His stomach and chest still felt so tight, as if that man was still lurking around, ready to strike... but... he... brought him back...?\n\n``Mhm, that's right. He looked sad, like he felt it was his fault you passed out.'' She quickly walked over, presenting a note. ``He asked me to give this to you when you got up.''\n\nManic, despite the circumstance, it is nice to see your face again. You really have your mother's features. \nI know you have questions. I will wait for you at the lookout tomorrow. Until then, please get rest.\n--Doctor Ivo ``Eggman'' Robotnik\n\nHe looked over the note multiple times, but the lines didn't change. Robotnik... Eggman... was happy to see him? He... had his mom's face? And... he was waiting for him?!\n\n``...This doesn't sound like the same man who had control of our city...'' The assistant was clearly just as baffled at the words being spoken, but he'd put his full name on the paper. If it was just `Doctor Eggman' he'd have his doubts they were truly the same, but... ``Are you going, my prince?''\n\nThat was a question for sure, as Manic frowned. ``...Something's changed `bout `im. I was shocked as shit but I could see he... he looked... tired? And... `is outfit shows `is feet off. I `unno if humans follow th' same social rules as us, but... I can't see a reason he'd do `at otherwise... Do ya have m' crown?''\n\nDespite the shock, the assistant nodded. ``Y-Yes, but it should only be worn during the interview, Manic... Do you... intend to approach him with it on?''\n\n``I do. I... I'm gonna face `im with m' best. It's no lead fer th' Hero, but I need answers from `im.'' Clenching a fist, Manic nodded to himself. Tomorrow...\n\n---\n\nFor once, Manic didn't mind being dolled up by his assistant. With his one suit being sent off to the cleaners, his new one which was just a shade or two darker than the other was being checked over for any wrinkles or imperfections.\n\nHe sat in a chair with a pensive look, until the dog looked satisfied, coming up with a brush. ``Are you ready for your brushing, Your Highness?'' With a sigh, he nodded, though he was surprised when he noticed a small bag with a pumice stone.\n\n``Uh, wassat fer?'' he questioned, watching as a strand of a broken quill was plucked out. Chaos, did he really break one in his... whatever happened? He honestly didn't remember what happened after seeing Robotnik's face, but he'd apparently thrown up and passed out after running... And gods, the night was torturous. So many memories... so many days he remembered that he wished he didn't. He felt so tired...\n\n``It is a pedicure set. After some thinking, I have no reason to doubt your preferences for being barefooted, even when in your finest threads. So I will ensure they look just as good for you.''\n\nThe statement caught Manic off guard, especially considering that apparently Eggman had been worried about him getting cold without slippers... But it was nice to see the old man actually listening to him now. Once his quills were fully groomed, he practically purred when his feet were pampered and cleaned thoroughly. It was probably excessive and unnecessary, but he could use a good start to his day.\n\nAfter that, he bit back the instinct to bristle when he was patted down. The coat was so heavy, but not as heavy as his sense of urgency. Once the silver crown was placed on his head, he was ready to head out, looking back at the assistant who was clutching his hat. ``Don't worry, I'll be okay. I dunno why, but... I got `is feeling he really does jus' wanna talk.''\n\n---\n\nThe buildings passed in a half-blur as he made his way to the same place he was last night, the tails of his coat trailing behind him. He could see Lightning Lynx standing at a corner again, giving the very startled cat a small wave as he walked by.\n\n``Whoa, Manic, you're uh...''\n\n``On business, Lightnin','' he gave an apologetic smile. ``But figured ya'd like t' see it.'' It was good to see a friendly face... But he steeled himself as he knew he was getting closer, ignoring the whispers of the passersby. Robotnik was waiting...\n\nOnce he saw the lookout, he could already see the tall human standing at its edge, and his stomach flipped. Gods, why was he like this... There were so many emotions bouncing around his head, he couldn't decide if he wanted to laugh, cry, or just... scream. But he found himself silent once he was above the buildings, seeing that same silhouette as before. \n\n``...Bein' barefoot looks good on you, doc,'' he managed to quirk a grin, and this time Eggman turned with much more grace than before. He still felt a shiver go through him at the familiar visage, but even as the tall human walked up to him, he wouldn't let himself run away. Not this time.\n\nTo his shock, Eggman then dropped to a knee, before taking his hand and pressing his bald forehead to it - a traditional knight's kneel. And holy fuck, the simple act was making his chest act crazy! Why was this... how was this even happening...?\n\n``I should say the same. You've grown into a handsome young man,'' he finally said after a moment, before standing up, walking back over to the railing. He gently motioned for Manic to follow, and he found himself standing at the edge of the outlook overlooking everything. His mind was buzzing, where did he even start...?\n\n``...Why are you here?'' Might as well go with the first thing on his mind.\n\n``...Why am I here in this city?''\n\nManic abruptly turned to face him as the desire - no, the demand - for an answer overpowered his smooth tone. How? Just... HOW?! How was this bastard...\n\n``No, ya fuckin' fatass! Why are ya alive?! Why are ya standin' in front o' me like nothin' happened?! We... I... We saw tha' explosion! Felt it, even!! Fifteen years, I still see tha' fuckin' explosion in my dreams--m-my nightmares! Tha' day... tha' day ya AND my brother vanished in smoke n' light n' fire! He thrashed yer factory, he went t' stop whatevah plan ya had goin, an'en just... everythin' lit up blue! It lit up th' fuckin' sky fer like five minutes! It almost toppled our van from as far away as it was! Ya... yer supposed t' be dead!! Why are ya HERE?! When... when he...?!'' \n\nFuck being polite, he was pissed! Eggman had no right, no fucking right, to be standing here talking to him like this! No right to... to be looking so damn fine and pretending all was normal when... \n\n``...You really didn't know I made it out of there?'' Eggman's jaw dropped, and Manic wondered just what the FUCK he'd been missing the last few years. ``...I thought for sure you knew I was alive when the War for the Planet broke out.''\n\nManic did his best to glare at his hated enemy, but through the cascade of tears, he probably looked like a sad kitten more than an enraged prince. ``...We weren't here fer that, Buttnik! Th' Oracle had us all in Mobodoon! We didn't even gebback TO Mobotropolis until like a year ago or so!'' He took a shaky breath, one of his hands putting the rail in a death grip. ``We knew nothin'! It's th' whole reason I'm even fuckin' here, t' learn about what all we missed from this one guy!''\n\nHe fought back a hiccup, but it didn't stop the next sob, as pathetic as it was. Here he was, crying in front of the man who had ruined his childhood and forced him into war at the age of eight... He didn't deserve those tears, but he couldn't stop! And Eggman's silence was only getting him more heated, his breath coming out in sharp hisses.\n\n``My escape pod was fortified to handle the Chaos Emeralds. After the explosion happened, the six emeralds I had flew towards South Island. From my research at the time, I had been under the impression they were being pulled to the location of the seventh emerald, so I wasted no time in following them. I... didn't even think about Robo... Mobotropolis anymore. I was ready to take on the world at that point.''\n\n``...So... ya just... left? Zoomed off in yer lil' pod, tossin' aside everythin' ya ruined so we could all pick up th' pieces?!''\n\n``...Not my most virtuous moment.'' Manic froze, as he heard the tone shift suddenly. Was that... regret? Was Eggman actually sorry for leaving in such a way? ``...When I started on South Island, I had found a different way to power robots, using Mobini as batteries. The Chaos Power they contained was useful for my new Badnik line... Eventually I switched to Chaos Drives, as they were much easier to produce than it was to capture little animals for my needs. GUN had already perfected the art using them in their drones, so I just copied their mechanisms.''\n\n``Gee, swell, yer environmentally conscious now!'' A laugh, bitter and grating out of its disbelief, tore from his lips like a snarling cat. ``That sure helped fix my fuckin' teacher! I can't... I can't believe you! All these years... All! These! Fuckin'! Years! And ya just... forgot about us!! Ya lorded over us fer like ten years n' tossed us all like trash!''\n\nManic swung, though admittedly not his brightest idea. The hiss as his knuckles dug into that large belly was still satisfying, but as his next punch connected, it seemed all it did was just make the human tense. He lashed another, another, as tears poured down his cheeks. Chuck... Farrell... Sonia's parents... his friends... so many people had been turned to robots! Effectively gone, not even functioning without their corruptor to command them, it had been one of the worst mass funerals in the city's history.\n\n``All those... all those peeps... hard workin' citizens YOU turned t' robots! We couldn't fix `em! We couldn't even wake `em up! We fuckin' buried `em after all `at shit!'' he howled, swinging another punch, once more answered with another grunt. He couldn't stop, even if what he did was going to bite him back. He didn't care if this landed him in the Roboticizer next, or whatever the fuck Eggman did to people now. He was...\n\nBeing hugged?\n\nA strong hand around his back, another stroking the side of his cheek, the feeling of warmth he was pressed against...\n\nHis arms instinctively clenched into the folds of the sleek jacket, his words choked out as he felt his anger return to grief. The laughing gone, his voice hoarse from screaming with every punch, all he could do was let the final thing happen. He cried. This time there was no one here to comfort, no one he had to try and be strong for. So he cried harder than he ever had.\n\nHe bawled like a baby, pressing against the man who caused all his grief in the most ironic twist of fate. He wanted to thrash, to bite, to just... give hell to this fat man who ruined his childhood. He wanted to curse his name, to drag him to the dungeons for all the shit he'd done, but here, standing in the cool air, feeling a grip that told of remorse and comfort... Gods, what changed...?\n\n``I'm sorry...'' Robotnik - no, this wasn't Robotnik, not even close - was so gentle. ``I can't fix the mistakes I've made. And I would be a liar if I told you I'm suddenly a good guy now.'' The warmth receded, but a gentle hand was wiping his tears, another one taking ahold of his hand. ``But, I want to make sure you know, I'm never touching Mobotropolis again. I crossed a line I never should have. Your kingdom will always be safe from me.''\n\nManic didn't want to believe anything that came out of his mouth, but there was just no way the evil dictator he knew from so long ago would ever hug him like that. He gave a shuddering breath, wondering if he was in a dream, only to bite back a gasp when the doc also had visible streaks between his eyes and mustache. Still, the doc remained strangely calm, as he stood back up to look out over the city. ``...Time is a funny thing, isn't it, Manic? Here I am, a haggard old man with ambitions galore and regrets unfathomable, and you've transformed from a street punk with seismic drums to a proud prince.''\n\n``Pfft, you wish...'' Manic found himself scoffing. ``I'm in m' third year o' remedial lessons. Sonia's always been th' more royally inclined...'' Still, he turned to join Eggman in their shared view, hoisting himself up so he was perched on the lower bar.\n\n``...Are you not cold?''\n\n``...Yeah, but it's worth it. I don't wanna make peeps think I'm some high-collar douche like Montclaire...'' He practically spat the name out. ``...But what `bout you? Not that I... don't like th' view, but yer...''\n\n``Chaos Emeralds,'' Eggman pointed out. ``I've been around them long enough that I have enhanced strength and thermal resistance. It's called being Chaos Touched.'' Manic opened his mouth to try and retort, but came up blank. Chaos Emeralds, huh... He'd only heard bits and pieces about them from books in the secret royal library, but not enough. But apparently, even regular folks like Eggman could get powers from them... ``Come up here.''\n\nTo his shock, Eggman easily hoisted him up, and he shivered before he found himself sitting on the back of the human's neck, legs dangling over the barrel-chest below. The stiff collar could almost work as a seat, and he bit back a moan when those warm gloved fingers started massaging his cold toes. He really should not be appreciating having his feet touched by Eggman of all humans, but this was probably the closest thing he had to his... ideal situation. A human who liked the same things he did... Closing his eyes, he tried to center himself while he got warmed up. Once he opened them again, he realized he had an even better view from this vantage point, and resisted the urge to thank the doctor. It was... peaceful, as they basked in a strange bonding silence for several minutes.\n\n``...So/So...'' Manic sputtered as it seemed they both had started to ask a question at the same time, and Eggman's jovial laugh somehow sounded... nice to his ears. It wasn't that dark, violent laugh he was known for, but almost reminded him of a fake Santa Claus with a bit more... deviousness. It was... honestly getting to him. ``Go ahead, Manic. You deserve to ask all the questions.''\n\n``...If yer still causin' trouble, how are ya not behind bars now?'' Manic sniffled a bit, trying to get his emotions more under control. He had to try not to think of the fact he was just bawling into a huge human's chest... Fuck.\n\n``International laws are a bit tricky. GUN can't technically arrest me unless I'm caught during an active crime,'' he allowed himself a little smirk. He took pride in all his getaways, but sometimes he had to wonder if Sonic had purposely let him go just for the thrill of it all...\n\n``Feh, course ya'd find a way t' get off easy... Next question then... Do ya know anythin' `bout a `Hero of Mobius?'''\n\nThe question hung in the air, and Manic could swear he thought Eggman winced by the strange twinge in his shoulders, but thought better of it. Why would he?\n\n``Of course. Who do you think keeps me from winning all the time?''\n\nHoly. Shit.\n\nManic's jaw dropped, and it would have been comical if his eyes weren't red and puffy from sobbing like a bitch. An actual, honest to gods lead! His own - former? nemesis? - knew who and where the Hero was! He leaned over, looking at the doc's large nose and mustache intently, even though he was half upside-down.\n\n``Holy shit! Robo - I mean, Eggman, ya just saved me! Please, ya gotta tell me, where is he? We're supposed t' do an interview in two weeks!'' Now this time Eggman did wince, and Manic felt like he'd somehow intruded on something. His face fell into a more serious, concerned expression, as he hopped down to place a hand on top of the human's. ``Eggman? What is it?''\n\n``...I fear two weeks may not be enough time.'' The way he spoke, Manic felt his heart drop. But why, he couldn't explain... He didn't know anything, so why would he feel like it was his problem? And why did they need more time? ``Manic... the reason I'm here in this city is actually because... the Hero is sick. Very, very sick. And I don't know if I can fix him in just two weeks.''",
"writing_bbcode_parsed": "<span style='word-wrap: break-word;'>While he had a successful morning on his first day, that was really about all the luck he&#039;d had as far as finding the Hero. It really seemed, no matter how much he looked, everyone was being rewarded for something they did because of just how badly the world got fucked over. He really wanted to know more about it, but if his mom&#039;s advisors knew he got any information from anyone but their target he&#039;d probably have to do more remedial shit... He grumbled in annoyance, but shoved it away. Now wasn&#039;t the time.<br /><br />He was on his fourth day now... And at least last night had been merciful. No nightmares. And his assistant didn&#039;t flip at the fact he got a music player now, nor did he inquire about his music tastes. Yesterday had been... well, useless. The weather turned to snow for the day, and as much as he wanted to use each early day as he could, he couldn&#039;t risk frostbite. He just couldn&#039;t go out in his dress whites. How had he been missing out on this knowledge for so long?! Some of the barely clothed athletes were downright <em>delightful</em>, with lightly carved muscles. Some were even oiled up for the shots, giving their skin a glisten that fur just couldn&#039;t match. And fuck, some of the guys had really tight underwear, leaving very little to the imagination...<br /><br />Which his imagination definitely did things to him then, and it made him glad he was wearing pants... He remembered the assistant being concerned he was running a fever, until he&#039;d caught the cover and gave him a look that while could have been disgust at his preferences, he knew the old man was just more irritated he was fantasizing in public.<br /><br />``May the gods help us if you do entice a human male to visit your penthouse...&#039;&#039; he&#039;d said, and boy that did NOT help! He&#039;d nearly thrown the booklet at his face before hurrying to his room as his mind and hand did the rest.<br /><br />After that incident, he decided to focus on his puzzle for the evening, while using a city map he&#039;d managed to get printed for him. At least this would give him something productive to do rather than purely personal.<br /><br />With the snow falling outside his window, Manic sat as close to it as he could while he had the wooden tower on a stand. It swiveled on its base, allowing him to look at all four sides without moving around, which made things easier. He pulled out the slip of paper which had all of his notes on it - notes specifically about the puzzle, since he had no way to record himself doing anything - and went over them again. ``No difference on any o&#039; th&#039; edges... magnet in bottom right opened `ese four panels `ere... Each panel&#039;s got a number in it... one, four, six, seven...&#039;&#039; But what did those numbers mean? He couldn&#039;t see any other numbers on the tower, and there wasn&#039;t any element that looked the same distributed in that fashion. There didn&#039;t seem to be any true order to the numbers, either. ``Maybe... maybe I gotta count different things?&#039;&#039; he frowned. But what could he even see there was only one of on this thing?<br /><br />With a pencil and paper in hand, he started counting every unique aspect of the tower he could see. Steps along the outside, the number of panels, the switches he&#039;d uncovered so far... but nothing wanted to add up for him, even after two hours.<br /><br />Grumbling, he&#039;d given the opened panel a poke, surprised when it had actually moved with a solid click. ``Wait... more switches?&#039;&#039;<br /><br />With a curious finger, he&#039;d begun pushing each panel the number of times it read, and each had clicked after that many presses. Another click sounded, and Manic began eagerly pushing and tugging at each section until he finally felt the top piece come off. ``Fuck yeah!!&#039;&#039;<br /><br />The rest of that evening had been a lot of fiddling with the top piece, as it seemed to be some sort of massive key. But how it unlocked the rest, he wasn&#039;t sure... Still, he&#039;d take the progress!<br /><br />---<br /><br />Thankfully, today was not as cold, and he was able to get out and enjoy the lack of blustering winds. The city looked so pretty with the light dusting of snow still present... It was melting fast and would be gone by the evening, but that didn&#039;t matter. After studying the town map, he now had some places he could check. One of the cooler areas was a housing complex nearby, as well as a sort of tourist shop for Green Hill - it had been a pretty popular area but had been apparently wrecked during the war and needed some work done. The proceeds all went to restoring it, and so far it was apparently on its way to normal.<br /><br />Still, that was a way&#039;s off.<br /><br />True to his plan, the next stop was a small store. One of the biggest things for any town was to check the best place to shop. And even still, most sapient heavy cities didn&#039;t have supermarkets, making for a rather quiet and easy experience. While the hotel would cover food, there was nothing wrong with hitting up a grocery store or other areas for small snacks, so he had a snack allowance of sorts he could also use. Thank the gods, he would hate only eating when the hotel offered food.<br /><br />But more importantly, he didn&#039;t want to just ask the working clerk without buying anything. He was raised better than that, and would at least put his money to good use in the process.<br /><br />The shop was surprisingly well stocked, and there were a handful of people grabbing vegetables that had been brought from a nearby greenhouse. Another section had fresh bread that had just been delivered that morning, and there was a decently sized section of refrigerated drinks and sandwiches. In his browsing, he almost managed to bump into a very tall figure, but thankfully he either didn&#039;t or the other didn&#039;t care.<br /><br />As much as he&#039;d have loved to pile his cart, he just wanted a few. And wait, was he... barefoot? Nah, it couldn&#039;t be. Maybe it was just light coloring on his shoes.<br /><br />Gah, he had to get a grip! He wasn&#039;t here to `window shop&#039; for a hookup. After some more looking, he got a couple cans of Chaos Cola and headed to the register, surprised when the human was also in line right in front of him. It wasn&#039;t like a bad line, and he could hear the customers in front chatting with each other. Ah, the peace of people who weren&#039;t in a hurry to do anything... He idly stretched and adjusted his basket, glancing back and forth to see if there was anything else he&#039;d want, before he actually looked ahead and let his curiosity answer his question.<br /><br />Oh. Sweet. Chaos...<br /><br />Manic had to bite his lip to keep the gasp from escaping when he actually took in the figure in front of him. He was <em>tall</em> even for a human. He had to be almost twice his height... The coat was sleek with a high collar at the back, black with red trim, but best and worst of all... the bottom half of his outfit was to die for. Manic thought he&#039;d never see a human barefoot in this city, at this time, but here this man had stirrups! And he looked like he wasn&#039;t even cold at all...<br /><br />And by the gods, his feet were long... Long enough that it could probably cover his torso - sweet mercy, he was down bad. It was almost a blessing there were pretty much no humans in Mobotropolis, even still. If he had to deal with this on a regular basis, he was fucked!<br /><br />The `cha-ching!&#039; of the register thankfully broke him out of his stupor, grateful for the fact no one was looking at him being a pervert. His face burned so bright, but he just had to get through this line and... not stare at that huge ass or big feet. He could do this.<br /><br />Though one thing that was odd... the clerk seemed almost... too neutral. It was almost as if he was only being polite to the big guy because he had to, rather than typical customer service friendliness. It was really weird, since he&#039;d been talking a bit more animatedly to the customers in front of him.<br /><br />When he left, Manic let out a breath he didn&#039;t know he was holding, smiling at the goat at the counter.<br /><br />``Howdy! What&#039;s a well-dressed stranger doing in this little shop?&#039;&#039; the goat seemed to resume his more polite tone, causing Manic to blink. Was there personal beef going on??<br /><br />``Oh, uh, looking fer a mystery man I&#039;m tryna interview... Any clues on a `Hero of Mobius&#039; `at lives near here?&#039;&#039; he asked, while carefully sliding his basket up. The older male pursed his lips for a moment, opening as if to speak, but shut it again before shaking his head.<br /><br />``Can&#039;t say I do, partner. He let you set up an interview but didn&#039;t tell you where he is?&#039;&#039; Manic could understand that being the goat&#039;s line of thinking, as it was odd. But...<br /><br />``Well, he was supposed t&#039; mail us last month buuuuut he didn&#039;t. Deadline&#039;s coming up so they sent me out early t&#039; see if I can track `im down...&#039;&#039; He sighed. ``Well, thanks anyways. But hey, what&#039;s witta human guy? Som&#039;m up?&#039;&#039; The clerk paused for a good moment, staring hard as if in disbelief. Was he really that out of the loop? He barely knew anyone out this way. ``Been kinda closed off, so my knowledge is zip.&#039;&#039;<br /><br />There was another beat of silence before the goat resumed and started to pack. <br /><br />``Doctor Eggman. He&#039;s... something. And that artificial intelligence daughter of his creeps me out with how she never blinks... Just a word of advice, don&#039;t go messing with him unless you have a really good reason.&#039;&#039; <br /><br />With that vague tip, Manic could only nod and give over some money, walking out and insisting he keep the change for his help. Scribbling in his notepad, he sighed again. <em>No leads from the clerk, which is not good. But now I&#039;m curious on this Eggman. Who is he, and why does the clerk not like him?</em> Also why was he just... sporting the things that made him so hot under the collar?<br /><br />On that note... AI Daughter? Did he have someone else with him and he just never noticed? With bag in hand, he looked down both sides of the street, and once more saw that tall drink of water walking down the sidewalk, not even flinching from the cold. Gods, why was he this lucky... ``Knock it off, Manic...&#039;&#039; he whispered to himself, before looking at the human&#039;s shoulder. Indeed, there was a small human-like girl, but her body flickered and broke into particles of light in areas as she moved about - well, floated.<br /><br />They seemed to be talking about something, as he could see her mouth move, but they were too far away for him to really hear, and only getting further. As much as he wanted to follow, that was just hella rude. He had his own direction to go to...<br /><br />But when they rounded the corner, fading out of sight, the laugh he heard sent the weirdest wave of heat and cold straight through him.<br /><br />``Whathefuck...&#039;&#039; he muttered quickly under his breath, actually clenching his arms to himself. Why did that noise both scare AND arouse him? <br /><br />Shaking his head quickly, he decided to bolt for the hotel and get his thoughts together... It wasn&#039;t likely he&#039;d ever see that man again anyways, but then again, the way the clerk talked, clearly he was shopping semi-regularly...<br /><br />---<br /><br />The rest of his afternoon was spent chasing more leads, all of which led to dead ends. He&#039;d even taken to asking about Miles Prower - curiously, he went by Tails according to some folks - but no one could recall hearing anything about him being called a `Hero of Earth&#039; or even mentioning an interview with the Royal Family. That was the most frustrating part.<br /><br />One would really think that if someone found out they were being interviewed by a king, queen, prince, princess, whatever... they&#039;d be talking about it way more! Either this hero was one humble piece of work, or he was actually dreading this interview and keeping it a secret... Or he probably didn&#039;t want the combined attention to attract a paparazzi. That had to be the reason. There was no way someone would accept an interview if they didn&#039;t want to do it. Even a `world-famous&#039; hero that didn&#039;t have a title.<br /><br />The hours were long, and he had to make sure to stop inside a building to warm back up, often chatting with whoever was working the booth or counter. It seemed people were becoming a bit more aware, too, as more tended to wave at him. Compared to the first two days when everyone was doing double-takes, it was... nice. People here knew there was a prince among them, but didn&#039;t make a move to rush him or make it a big deal.<br /><br />Yeah, he was doing this right.<br /><br />---<br /><br />Manic had really not expected to run into the human again, at least not in the same day. But he&#039;d been told there was an excellent view to enjoy from the Sunset Heights district, hence its name. He enjoyed the view from his hotel, but apparently this place was downright beautiful if one got to the overlook. The temperature was dropping with each hour the sun sank in the sky, but even when his assistant pleaded with him to put on some loafers, Manic insisted on walking there his way. As long as he kept moving, he&#039;d be alright. The concrete was barely lukewarm thanks to all the sun from the day, so that&#039;d give him a couple hours at least.<br /><br />He&#039;d noticed someone else already there, but hadn&#039;t realized it was the human of his attention until he hit the top steps. Gods... especially now, that back silhouette was breathtaking, the way his one leg was crossed, giving him a fantastic view of his sole. He had to bite his lip and look away, instead looking over the fence, his lip coming back open as he beheld exactly what they were talking about. It looked like a sea of amber, the way the setting sun reflected off of the roofs, but not so badly that it&#039;d hurt his eyes. It was like looking at gems from above, and apparently if one visited on the solstice, it would line up with the large arch at the end of the district. Of course, most people wouldn&#039;t come out at this temperature, and he definitely felt it in his toes, but it wasn&#039;t like the weather would get any better for sunsets.<br /><br />``Wow...&#039;&#039; he whispered, the sight distracting him long enough that he hadn&#039;t noticed the odd girl floating toward him.<br /><br />``Excuse me,&#039;&#039; her voice, flat but strangely full of curiosity, made him turn about. ``I noticed you earlier today. Do you have business with my father...?&#039;&#039;<br /><br />In an instant, Manic&#039;s face felt like it glowing just as bad as the roofs, and he shook his head. ``N-No no, sorry! I was told bout`is view. Didn&#039;t know ya&#039;d be up here. D-Do I need t&#039; leave?&#039;&#039; He held up his hands in a sign of surrender, gulping when she didn&#039;t respond for a moment. ``...Was I tha&#039; obvious looking at `is feet...?&#039;&#039; Gods, he really hoped she wasn&#039;t pissed at him for ogling! He didn&#039;t regret it, but he didn&#039;t want to anger the guy&#039;s `daughter&#039; if she was protective of him...<br /><br />``Wait... That voice,&#039;&#039; the human suddenly spoke, and Manic barely had time to register <em>why did that voice scare him</em> when he turned around. ``Manic?!&#039;&#039;<br /><br />A gasp tore itself out of his throat, his head snapping up as he noticed the all too familiar pink nose and huge mustache belonging to only one person. The chill of the cement and the winter air was forgotten as the most unrelenting chill dropped in his stomach. His legs shook in a tense backwards descent, but his chest felt so tight. It was almost hard to breathe, as he didn&#039;t even realize he&#039;d started hyperventilating. No. This. This couldn&#039;t be real. It was impossible! He died! Robotnik was dead! How was he standing there?! He... He had to move. He had to get away! He... He didn&#039;t know what was going on anymore, just that his body had to <em>move</em>. Run. He had to run. <em>Danger</em>.<br /><br />SWATBots... he could still remember their pounding footsteps as that voice... that fucking <em>voice</em>... rang out everywhere. Babies!! <br /><br />He was wheezing now, despite not even getting very far, the buildings having turned into a blur as his mind put him back in Robotropolis. All the running, all the fighting... He felt defenseless, relying on all his past instincts as he swung himself over a dumpster. The image of Farrell, roboticized and part of Robotnik&#039;s army, blared in his vision like a bright light. Robotnik&#039;s cruel smile from their close encounters was like a nightmare in itself, a whimper escaping as fear set in his bones. A man who wanted him gone was literally in walking range, and he had nothing to protect himself. His head... his head was swimming. He was so dizzy... He had to...<br /><br />His body locked up as he fell to his knees, violently spewing the contents of his breakfast and lunch, making his mouth and nose tingle. ``Fffuuuhhhck...&#039;&#039; His vision blurred more, like he was swimming: was he crying? He couldn&#039;t tell if he was on the ground or against a wall, and it was just... so cold... His quills bristled, he couldn&#039;t even get his legs to move... He couldn&#039;t curl up... His feet hurt now. <em>Everything</em> hurt. Did he fall? He barely even noticed the colors swirling around him, everything seemed so dark now...<br /><br />---<br /><br />Eggman was so damn tired... He could literally feel the exhaustion lingering in his bones from the absolute mess he&#039;d had to endure the last few months. Sleep just hadn&#039;t been coming to him as readily, as he&#039;d been working so tirelessly to try and locate the Chaos Emeralds once more. They had five, but that was it... Running calculations and scanning the world for any unusual phenomena was always the plan, but it took <em>forever</em>.<br /><br />It was a damn good thing he&#039;d installed security, just to make sure all was well when he was away. And Sage, bless her digital heart... If it wasn&#039;t for her, he wasn&#039;t sure if he&#039;d been able to act as quickly. To think things had gotten this bad in the short time he&#039;d been away. He should have known something was wrong months ago. But now here he was, playing actual doctor to someone he&#039;d rather be fighting.<br /><br />Though it was... interesting. It gave him an excuse to wear his new suit, knowing that Sonic had a thing for feet. So if he stayed barefoot, it&#039;d at least keep him calmer, if not let his hormones distract him from the other symptoms. And despite it being winter, he didn&#039;t even feel the chill, since he had a natural temperature resistance. He could traipse naked in the scorching desert or the blustering arctic with no problem if he <em>really</em> wanted to.<br /><br />But that didn&#039;t make things easy... It felt like each Emerald only bought him days now to fix things!<br /><br />He didn&#039;t want to leave Sonic alone, but he did need groceries... At the least, simple things. Soup, bread, other light foods... Some vegetables for him, at least. The poor thing&#039;s migraines were debilitating when they happened. Luckily he had drones that could help with getting compresses and such, and luckily Metal Sonic didn&#039;t seem like he&#039;d take advantage of the situation either. If it really came down to it, though... he&#039;d have to get ahold of his annoying friends. But when they&#039;d left the store, he had to laugh when Sage informed him that his outfit had gotten the attention of another sapient!<br /><br />That had to have been the highlight of his day, knowing his stirrups got another guy hooked. He loved to be a tease when he could, and he would have turned around if he hadn&#039;t been in public... It brought a smile to his face, even as he felt the bags under his eyes.<br /><br />It had been some hours later when Sage suggested taking a moment to look out over the city, as she had insisted a good view and some quiet moments would do him some good. The sun was in the perfect area as well, so when he made his way to the district, it had truly been a sight to see... Much as he dreamed of any place being turned into Eggmanland, the natural beauty of the area was something he could, and did, appreciate in this moment. A bit of calm amidst the chaos.<br /><br />When Sage detected the same person from before, she had been somewhat concerned, as if they were being tracked. A question he highly doubted, as he&#039;d even said ``We are getting close to the solstice, Sage. Perhaps he&#039;s just here for the view as well,&#039;&#039; he&#039;d assured. Feeling a bit showy, he made sure to cross his legs so his little mystery `stalker&#039; could get a peek of what he liked...<br /><br />``Wow...&#039;&#039; His brow furrowed as a spark of recognition flipped in the back of his mind. That thick accent sounded... familiar. Not in a bad way, but not in a good way either. Apparently Sage took it as a sign to step in, and he could hear her asking if he had business. He fought a snort. Who would have business with him? Just because he wasn&#039;t committing crimes didn&#039;t mean he wasn&#039;t seen as a danger...<br /><br />``N-No no, sorry! I was told bout`is view. Didn&#039;t know ya&#039;d be up here. D-Do I need t&#039; leave?&#039;&#039; That broken city accent... He had definitely heard it before, but not quite this deep... But the tones, the inflections... ``...Was I tha&#039; obvious looking at `is feet...?&#039;&#039;<br /><br />No. Way.<br /><br />``Wait... That voice...&#039;&#039; He instantly whirled around, as he had to. He had to confirm his suspicions, as he hadn&#039;t heard that voice in AGES. The moment he caught those green quills, his voice betrayed him before he could stop himself - not that he realized he&#039;d spoken a bit too loudly to start with anyway. ``Manic?!&#039;&#039;<br /><br />That was a bad move. For as much as he was shocked, Manic went into full fight-or-flight mode. Those deep gray eyes were <em>wide with fear</em>, pupils dilated to the point they looked like black voids among the whites. The gasp told him all he needed to know, as was the way he was walking backwards. The poor thing was absolutely terrified, but who could blame him? Still, as much as he felt bad, he couldn&#039;t just leave Manic to run in such an unstable state. ``Sage, track him, quickly!&#039;&#039;<br /><br />Luckily his daughter didn&#039;t even question it, her eyes locked in Manic&#039;s direction as he hurried along. ``What is that fool doing out here barefoot like that, he&#039;s not even Chaos Touched!&#039;&#039; he grumbled under his breath. Even Sonic wasn&#039;t that crazy! It was just a damn good thing that Manic didn&#039;t have Sonic&#039;s abilities... Even though he still had to move quickly, he didn&#039;t have problems tracking the panicked prince. Hopefully he could just get to him before he hurt himself!<br /><br />He weaved through what felt like three city blocks, making his way through a couple alleys before he finally found a bundle of green and white tucked against a wall, curled up. His nose curled at the sight of the hedgehog&#039;s meal being ejected onto the ground, but there were more important things. Namely, keeping the fool from getting frostbite.<br /><br />With careful hands, he hoisted the shivering male up, but frowned as he had to wonder where the hell to even go. His own hotel? No, Manic would freak out worse than that. Sonic&#039;s house - what the hell, no. Not like this. After a moment, he realized the only safe thing was to find out where Manic had come from, and hope he didn&#039;t wake up before they got there.<br /><br />Luckily there was a human-sized taxi service nearby, and he was able to call one down, carefully placing him into the seat. The driver looked notably concerned, but as Sage phased through, she took care of any questions he might have tried to ask.<br /><br />``Father, why did this individual panic upon seeing you? You spoke his name... is there some sort of past I do not have in my databanks?&#039;&#039; Her curiosity about things outside of Cyber Space was honestly adorable, but her questions themselves made him wince. ``It is almost as if he shows signs of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder...&#039;&#039;<br /><br />``Sage... this is Prince Manic Hedgehog. You may have records of him having a twin sister, Sonia... But he is also <em>Sonic&#039;s</em> brother. Sonic is the oldest of the royal triplets. I haven&#039;t seen this young man since he was just ten years old... back when I had control of Mobotropolis years ago. I have to assume he probably <em>does</em> have PTSD... You don&#039;t... you don&#039;t know the things I used to do. He does.&#039;&#039; <br /><br />As much as he took pride in his goals and desires, there was no small amount of repulsion for that part of himself. He could write off his change as chasing grandeur, going after gods and obscene power, but in truth... he really had softened up, a part of him realizing what he&#039;d done in Robotropolis was... too much. Fifteen years was a lot of time to reflect.<br /><br />Sage, to her credit, kept her surprise to just a slight widening of her eyes, but he could tell she was stunned, if not by the fact Sonic had a sibling and was actually a prince, then the fact that he&#039;d been a worse villain in the past. With a sigh, he shifted to look at Manic more carefully now that he could. He&#039;d really grown... His fur was healthy, his clothes were pristine save for the scuffs from where he&#039;d fallen while vomiting, and his face... gods, he was cute. ``...He really has his mother&#039;s softness...&#039;&#039; he muttered, carefully brushing a wet streak.<br /><br />``It seems Manic has been in the area for four days, according to the hotel records I could locate,&#039;&#039; Sage said after a moment. ``They have a reservation lasting two weeks.&#039;&#039; Well, that was at least something to be grateful for. He knew Manic would definitely want answers...&nbsp;&nbsp;Sage gave the directions, and the driver was peeling rubber to get there quickly. When they pulled up, he grimaced as he pulled out the unconscious prince, making his way inside. The receptionist looked alarmed, but he held a hand up to prevent any confrontation.<br /><br />``He passed out at Sunset Heights. I don&#039;t exactly have slippers for him, so I couldn&#039;t leave him to get cold,&#039;&#039; he explained. He scrawled a quick thing on a sticky note after getting him on the couch. ``Give him this when he wakes up... Good day.&#039;&#039; He walked out and waved off the taxi after a quick payment, crossing his arms as he walked to his current destination. Manic was definitely going to seek him out... the poor thing, he&#039;d looked traumatized, as if somehow witnessing a zombie rise from its grave. And as much as he liked to make people quake in fear with a drone or two, this... this felt <em>wrong</em>. It didn&#039;t even feel like Manic was looking at him, but rather at something else...<br /><br />Ugh, now he had TWO hedgehog related problems. At least this one was hopefully easier.<br /><br />---<br /><br />``Ugh... My head...&#039;&#039; Gods, what the hell happened?? Why did he feel so damn sick? Did he get food poisoning or something...?<br /><br />``Manic! Prince Manic, thank the stars!&#039;&#039; His ears immediately flattened to his head at the loudness, but he must have made a noise that got the dog to speak quieter. He was slowly eased into a sitting position and given a small cup of water with ibuprofen, something he was very grateful for. He felt like a total wreck! ``When we heard you were brought in, we feared you may have been attacked...&#039;&#039;<br /><br />``...Brought in...?&#039;&#039; His brow furrowed, as he realized he wasn&#039;t in his room but rather the lobby, with some other guests looking his way. Everything felt fuzzy... as if a static TV was playing near his head.<br /><br />``According to the receptionist, a man called Doctor Eggman had carried you in, giving her a slip of paper...&#039;&#039;<br /><br />Doctor... Eggman? ``Wait... Eggman... the store... the human in front of me at the store... Yeah... he was wearing stirrups...&#039;&#039; He felt his cheeks warm, but if the assistant noticed, he didn&#039;t care. ``Then I...&#039;&#039; <em>Sunset Heights. The girl. The mustache.</em> It must have shown on his face, as the assistant immediately started rushing to get a bucket.<br /><br />``My prince! Manic, are you unwell?!&#039;&#039;<br /><br />He shook in his seat on the couch, probably turning pale as his fingers gripped the edge of the couch. ``...Robotnik...&#039;&#039; his voice, a strained whisper, was still enough to cause the dog&#039;s face to slowly match his. ``...Th-the guy they&#039;re callin&#039; Eggman... It&#039;s Doctor Robotnik... I saw... I know `is face...&#039;&#039;<br /><br />``...Are you certain, Manic?&#039;&#039; the dog looked about ready to sound an alarm, but... ``He... brought you back to this hotel...?&#039;&#039;<br /><br />``Wait... he... he did?&#039;&#039; Manic looked at his assistant in disbelief before looking over to the receptionist, who remained oblivious to their conversation. Finding his voice, scratchy as it was... ``M-Ma&#039;am? Did ya say... Eggman... brought me back here from Sunset Heights?&#039;&#039; His stomach and chest still felt so tight, as if that man was still lurking around, ready to strike... but... he... brought him back...?<br /><br />``Mhm, that&#039;s right. He looked sad, like he felt it was his fault you passed out.&#039;&#039; She quickly walked over, presenting a note. ``He asked me to give this to you when you got up.&#039;&#039;<br /><br /><em>Manic, despite the circumstance, it is nice to see your face again. You really have your mother&#039;s features. <br />I know you have questions. I will wait for you at the lookout tomorrow. Until then, please get rest.<br />--Doctor Ivo ``Eggman&#039;&#039; Robotnik</em><br /><br />He looked over the note multiple times, but the lines didn&#039;t change. Robotnik... Eggman... was <em>happy</em> to see him? He... had his mom&#039;s face? And... he was waiting for him?!<br /><br />``...This doesn&#039;t sound like the same man who had control of our city...&#039;&#039; The assistant was clearly just as baffled at the words being spoken, but he&#039;d put his full name on the paper. If it was just `Doctor Eggman&#039; he&#039;d have his doubts they were truly the same, but... ``Are you going, my prince?&#039;&#039;<br /><br />That was a question for sure, as Manic frowned. ``...Something&#039;s changed `bout `im. I was shocked as shit but I could see he... he looked... tired? And... `is outfit shows `is feet off. I `unno if humans follow th&#039; same social rules as us, but... I can&#039;t see a reason he&#039;d do `at otherwise... Do ya have m&#039; crown?&#039;&#039;<br /><br />Despite the shock, the assistant nodded. ``Y-Yes, but it should only be worn during the interview, Manic... Do you... intend to approach him with it on?&#039;&#039;<br /><br />``I do. I... I&#039;m gonna face `im with m&#039; best. It&#039;s no lead fer th&#039; Hero, but I <em>need</em> answers from `im.&#039;&#039; Clenching a fist, Manic nodded to himself. Tomorrow...<br /><br />---<br /><br />For once, Manic didn&#039;t mind being dolled up by his assistant. With his one suit being sent off to the cleaners, his new one which was just a shade or two darker than the other was being checked over for any wrinkles or imperfections.<br /><br />He sat in a chair with a pensive look, until the dog looked satisfied, coming up with a brush. ``Are you ready for your brushing, Your Highness?&#039;&#039; With a sigh, he nodded, though he was surprised when he noticed a small bag with a pumice stone.<br /><br />``Uh, wassat fer?&#039;&#039; he questioned, watching as a strand of a broken quill was plucked out. Chaos, did he really break one in his... whatever happened? He honestly didn&#039;t remember what happened after seeing Robotnik&#039;s face, but he&#039;d apparently thrown up and passed out after running... And gods, the night was torturous. So many memories... so many days he remembered that he wished he didn&#039;t. He felt so tired...<br /><br />``It is a pedicure set. After some thinking, I have no reason to doubt your preferences for being barefooted, even when in your finest threads. So I will ensure they look just as good for you.&#039;&#039;<br /><br />The statement caught Manic off guard, especially considering that apparently Eggman had been worried about him getting cold without slippers... But it was nice to see the old man actually listening to him now. Once his quills were fully groomed, he practically purred when his feet were pampered and cleaned thoroughly. It was probably excessive and unnecessary, but he could use a good start to his day.<br /><br />After that, he bit back the instinct to bristle when he was patted down. The coat was so heavy, but not as heavy as his sense of urgency. Once the silver crown was placed on his head, he was ready to head out, looking back at the assistant who was clutching his hat. ``Don&#039;t worry, I&#039;ll be okay. I dunno why, but... I got `is feeling he really does jus&#039; wanna talk.&#039;&#039;<br /><br />---<br /><br />The buildings passed in a half-blur as he made his way to the same place he was last night, the tails of his coat trailing behind him. He could see Lightning Lynx standing at a corner again, giving the very startled cat a small wave as he walked by.<br /><br />``Whoa, Manic, you&#039;re uh...&#039;&#039;<br /><br />``On business, Lightnin&#039;,&#039;&#039; he gave an apologetic smile. ``But figured ya&#039;d like t&#039; see it.&#039;&#039; It was good to see a friendly face... But he steeled himself as he knew he was getting closer, ignoring the whispers of the passersby. Robotnik was waiting...<br /><br />Once he saw the lookout, he could already see the tall human standing at its edge, and his stomach flipped. Gods, why was he like this... There were so many emotions bouncing around his head, he couldn&#039;t decide if he wanted to laugh, cry, or just... scream. But he found himself silent once he was above the buildings, seeing that same silhouette as before. <br /><br />``...Bein&#039; barefoot looks good on you, doc,&#039;&#039; he managed to quirk a grin, and this time Eggman turned with much more grace than before. He still felt a shiver go through him at the familiar visage, but even as the tall human walked up to him, he wouldn&#039;t let himself run away. Not this time.<br /><br />To his shock, Eggman then dropped to a knee, before taking his hand and pressing his bald forehead to it - a traditional knight&#039;s kneel. And holy fuck, the simple act was making his chest act crazy! Why was this... how was this even happening...?<br /><br />``I should say the same. You&#039;ve grown into a handsome young man,&#039;&#039; he finally said after a moment, before standing up, walking back over to the railing. He gently motioned for Manic to follow, and he found himself standing at the edge of the outlook overlooking everything. His mind was buzzing, where did he even start...?<br /><br />``...Why are you here?&#039;&#039; Might as well go with the first thing on his mind.<br /><br />``...Why am I here in this city?&#039;&#039;<br /><br />Manic abruptly turned to face him as the desire - no, the <em>demand</em> - for an answer overpowered his smooth tone. How? Just... HOW?! How was this bastard...<br /><br />``No, ya fuckin&#039; fatass! Why are ya <em>alive</em>?! Why are ya standin&#039; in front o&#039; me like nothin&#039; happened?! We... I... We saw tha&#039; explosion! Felt it, even!! Fifteen years, I still see tha&#039; fuckin&#039; explosion in my dreams--m-my nightmares! Tha&#039; day... tha&#039; day ya AND my brother vanished in smoke n&#039; light n&#039; fire! He thrashed yer factory, he went t&#039; stop whatevah plan ya had goin, an&#039;en just... everythin&#039; lit up blue! It lit up th&#039; fuckin&#039; sky fer like five minutes! It almost toppled our van from as far away as it was! Ya... yer supposed t&#039; be <em>dead</em>!! Why are ya HERE?! When... when <em>he</em>...?!&#039;&#039; <br /><br />Fuck being polite, he was pissed! Eggman had no right, no <em>fucking</em> right, to be standing here talking to him like this! No right to... to be looking so damn fine and pretending all was normal when... <br /><br />``...You really didn&#039;t know I made it out of there?&#039;&#039; Eggman&#039;s jaw dropped, and Manic wondered just what the FUCK he&#039;d been missing the last few years. ``...I thought for sure you knew I was alive when the War for the Planet broke out.&#039;&#039;<br /><br />Manic did his best to glare at his hated enemy, but through the cascade of tears, he probably looked like a sad kitten more than an enraged prince. ``...We weren&#039;t <em>here</em> fer that, Buttnik! Th&#039; Oracle had us all in Mobodoon! We didn&#039;t even gebback TO Mobotropolis until like a year ago or so!&#039;&#039; He took a shaky breath, one of his hands putting the rail in a death grip. ``We knew <em>nothin</em>&#039;! It&#039;s th&#039; whole reason I&#039;m even fuckin&#039; here, t&#039; learn about what all we missed from this one guy!&#039;&#039;<br /><br />He fought back a hiccup, but it didn&#039;t stop the next sob, as pathetic as it was. Here he was, crying in front of the man who had ruined his childhood and forced him into war at the age of eight... He didn&#039;t deserve those tears, but he couldn&#039;t stop! And Eggman&#039;s silence was only getting him more heated, his breath coming out in sharp hisses.<br /><br />``My escape pod was fortified to handle the Chaos Emeralds. After the explosion happened, the six emeralds I had flew towards South Island. From my research at the time, I had been under the impression they were being pulled to the location of the seventh emerald, so I wasted no time in following them. I... didn&#039;t even think about Robo... Mobotropolis anymore. I was ready to take on the world at that point.&#039;&#039;<br /><br />``...So... ya just... left? Zoomed off in yer lil&#039; pod, tossin&#039; aside everythin&#039; ya ruined so we could all pick up th&#039; pieces?!&#039;&#039;<br /><br />``...Not my most virtuous moment.&#039;&#039; Manic froze, as he heard the tone shift suddenly. Was that... regret? Was Eggman actually <em>sorry</em> for leaving in such a way? ``...When I started on South Island, I had found a different way to power robots, using Mobini as batteries. The Chaos Power they contained was useful for my new Badnik line... Eventually I switched to Chaos Drives, as they were much easier to produce than it was to capture little animals for my needs. GUN had already perfected the art using them in their drones, so I just copied their mechanisms.&#039;&#039;<br /><br />``Gee, <em>swell</em>, yer environmentally conscious now!&#039;&#039; A laugh, bitter and grating out of its disbelief, tore from his lips like a snarling cat. ``That sure helped fix my fuckin&#039; teacher! I can&#039;t... I can&#039;t believe you! All these years... All! These! Fuckin&#039;! Years! And ya just... forgot about us!! Ya lorded over us fer like ten years n&#039; tossed us all like trash!&#039;&#039;<br /><br />Manic <em>swung</em>, though admittedly not his brightest idea. The hiss as his knuckles dug into that large belly was still satisfying, but as his next punch connected, it seemed all it did was just make the human tense. He lashed another, another, as tears poured down his cheeks. Chuck... Farrell... Sonia&#039;s parents... his friends... so many people had been turned to robots! Effectively gone, not even functioning without their corruptor to command them, it had been one of the worst mass funerals in the city&#039;s history.<br /><br />``All those... all those peeps... hard workin&#039; citizens YOU turned t&#039; robots! We couldn&#039;t fix `em! We couldn&#039;t even wake `em up! We fuckin&#039; <em>buried</em> `em after all `at shit!&#039;&#039; he howled, swinging another punch, once more answered with another grunt. He couldn&#039;t stop, even if what he did was going to bite him back. He didn&#039;t care if this landed him in the Roboticizer next, or whatever the fuck Eggman did to people now. He was...<br /><br />Being hugged?<br /><br />A strong hand around his back, another stroking the side of his cheek, the feeling of warmth he was pressed against...<br /><br />His arms instinctively clenched into the folds of the sleek jacket, his words choked out as he felt his anger return to grief. The laughing gone, his voice hoarse from screaming with every punch, all he could do was let the final thing happen. He cried. This time there was no one here to comfort, no one he had to try and be strong for. So he cried harder than he ever had.<br /><br />He bawled like a baby, pressing against the man who caused all his grief in the most ironic twist of fate. He wanted to thrash, to bite, to just... give hell to this fat man who ruined his childhood. He wanted to curse his name, to drag him to the dungeons for all the shit he&#039;d done, but here, standing in the cool air, feeling a grip that told of remorse and comfort... Gods, what changed...?<br /><br />``I&#039;m sorry...&#039;&#039; Robotnik - no, this wasn&#039;t Robotnik, not even close - was so gentle. ``I can&#039;t fix the mistakes I&#039;ve made. And I would be a liar if I told you I&#039;m suddenly a good guy now.&#039;&#039; The warmth receded, but a gentle hand was wiping his tears, another one taking ahold of his hand. ``But, I want to make sure you know, I&#039;m never touching Mobotropolis again. I crossed a line I never should have. Your kingdom will always be safe from me.&#039;&#039;<br /><br />Manic didn&#039;t <em>want</em> to believe anything that came out of his mouth, but there was just no way the evil dictator he knew from so long ago would ever hug him like that. He gave a shuddering breath, wondering if he was in a dream, only to bite back a gasp when the doc also had visible streaks between his eyes and mustache. Still, the doc remained strangely calm, as he stood back up to look out over the city. ``...Time is a funny thing, isn&#039;t it, Manic? Here I am, a haggard old man with ambitions galore and regrets unfathomable, and you&#039;ve transformed from a street punk with seismic drums to a proud prince.&#039;&#039;<br /><br />``Pfft, you wish...&#039;&#039; Manic found himself scoffing. ``I&#039;m in m&#039; third year o&#039; remedial lessons. Sonia&#039;s always been th&#039; more royally inclined...&#039;&#039; Still, he turned to join Eggman in their shared view, hoisting himself up so he was perched on the lower bar.<br /><br />``...Are you not cold?&#039;&#039;<br /><br />``...Yeah, but it&#039;s worth it. I don&#039;t wanna make peeps think I&#039;m some high-collar douche like Montclaire...&#039;&#039; He practically spat the name out. ``...But what `bout you? Not that I... don&#039;t like th&#039; view, but yer...&#039;&#039;<br /><br />``Chaos Emeralds,&#039;&#039; Eggman pointed out. ``I&#039;ve been around them long enough that I have enhanced strength and thermal resistance. It&#039;s called being Chaos Touched.&#039;&#039; Manic opened his mouth to try and retort, but came up blank. Chaos Emeralds, huh... He&#039;d only heard bits and pieces about them from books in the secret royal library, but not enough. But apparently, even regular folks like Eggman could get powers from them... ``Come up here.&#039;&#039;<br /><br />To his shock, Eggman easily hoisted him up, and he shivered before he found himself sitting on the back of the human&#039;s neck, legs dangling over the barrel-chest below. The stiff collar could almost work as a seat, and he bit back a moan when those warm gloved fingers started massaging his cold toes. He really should not be appreciating having his feet touched by <em>Eggman</em> of all humans, but this was probably the closest thing he had to his... ideal situation. A human who liked the same things he did... Closing his eyes, he tried to center himself while he got warmed up. Once he opened them again, he realized he had an even better view from this vantage point, and resisted the urge to thank the doctor. It was... peaceful, as they basked in a strange bonding silence for several minutes.<br /><br />``...So/So...&#039;&#039; Manic sputtered as it seemed they both had started to ask a question at the same time, and Eggman&#039;s jovial laugh somehow sounded... nice to his ears. It wasn&#039;t that dark, violent laugh he was known for, but almost reminded him of a fake Santa Claus with a bit more... deviousness. It was... honestly getting to him. ``Go ahead, Manic. You deserve to ask all the questions.&#039;&#039;<br /><br />``...If yer still causin&#039; trouble, how are ya not behind bars now?&#039;&#039; Manic sniffled a bit, trying to get his emotions more under control. He had to try not to think of the fact he was just bawling into a huge human&#039;s chest... Fuck.<br /><br />``International laws are a bit tricky. GUN can&#039;t technically arrest me unless I&#039;m caught during an active crime,&#039;&#039; he allowed himself a little smirk. He took pride in all his getaways, but sometimes he had to wonder if Sonic had purposely let him go just for the thrill of it all...<br /><br />``Feh, course ya&#039;d find a way t&#039; get off easy... Next question then... Do ya know anythin&#039; `bout a `Hero of Mobius?&#039;&#039;&#039;<br /><br />The question hung in the air, and Manic could swear he thought Eggman winced by the strange twinge in his shoulders, but thought better of it. Why would he?<br /><br />``Of course. Who do you think keeps me from winning all the time?&#039;&#039;<br /><br />Holy. Shit.<br /><br />Manic&#039;s jaw dropped, and it would have been comical if his eyes weren&#039;t red and puffy from sobbing like a bitch. An actual, honest to gods lead! His own - former? nemesis? - knew who and where the Hero was! He leaned over, looking at the doc&#039;s large nose and mustache intently, even though he was half upside-down.<br /><br />``Holy shit! Robo - I mean, Eggman, ya just saved me! Please, ya gotta tell me, where is he? We&#039;re supposed t&#039; do an interview in two weeks!&#039;&#039; Now this time Eggman <em>did</em> wince, and Manic felt like he&#039;d somehow intruded on something. His face fell into a more serious, concerned expression, as he hopped down to place a hand on top of the human&#039;s. ``Eggman? What is it?&#039;&#039;<br /><br />``...I fear two weeks may not be enough time.&#039;&#039; The way he spoke, Manic felt his heart drop. But why, he couldn&#039;t explain... He didn&#039;t know anything, so why would he feel like it was his problem? And why did they need more time? ``Manic... the reason I&#039;m here in this city is actually because... the Hero is sick. <em>Very, very</em> sick. And I don&#039;t know if I can fix him in just two weeks.&#039;&#039;</span>",
