The tentacle itself doesn't kill the host but rather split off and avoid any critical damage to said creature. However, the brain still would receive minor damage from the splitting. The slime creature does not wish to kill the host so much as keep him or her alive and mostly intact. The spine and or brain is targeted the most during infection given the target won't be able to retaliate when nerves can't communicate with each other and or are high-jacked by the smaller tentacles. Once the smaller tentacles have rooted themselves into the target they will keep the host alive and aware of what is happening. Granted you won't feel much of anything but it is still horrifying knowing that you are powerless to do anything else other than witnessing your own death and rebirth at the hands of the slime. \n\nit doesn't need you alive for the process of transformation or infection but prefers if you are alive because it would speed up the progress. ",
