So we roll the calendar back some 21 years to find young Megan happily lost in a book, as is her wont even to this day. Only now, she is reading as much for research as for entertainment. At nineteen, Megan is only a year away from completing her time as an Apprentice Story-teller and the tests required to earn her Journeyman status. To pass, she must have learned all of the old stories and histories perfectly and be able to recited them from memory. Fortunately, her path is somewhat easier than it was for prospective Story-tellers in the past. Even though the histories of her homeland have been preserved via oral tradition since memory began, these days they are also preserved in books. Despite some initial resistance, literacy is on the rise in her home country. Even though it might one day mean an end to the need for Story-tellers, and so put her out of work, she is thrilled by these new developments. Books can be carried with you and read whenever you please, without having to wait on sometimes tetchy Masters, or impatient audiences and she can linger over her favorites for as long as she pleases.
