Catherine and Sarah have been friends for years, though theirs is an unlikely friendship and quite unique in a city that's as class-conscious as Jaspertree. Catherine is the only daughter of a modestly wealthy merchant and ship's captain. She runs her father's warehouse while he is at sea and she has a degree of influence in the city that extends even beyond her small circles. Sarah is an orphan, born on the streets and raised by one of the city's minor priests until his death when she was thirteen. Before she met Catherine, she made her living as a pickpocket and minor thief, known for never stealing more than the cost of a bowl of soup and for occasionally giving everything she had to someone more unfortunate than she was.
The two of them met when Catherine discovered Sarah sleeping in a forgotten corner of the warehouse, wrapped up in blankets she had stolen from someone's shipment of dry goods. By law, Catherine should have reported the theft. She had a responsibility to her customers as well as a reputation to uphold. But Catherine knew that the punishment for even the most minor theft was enslavement in one of Jaspertree's many brothels and the thought of dooming anyone to a fate like that turned her stomach. So she offered Sarah a job in the warehouse instead, so the girl could pay off the cost of what she had stolen. Catherine expected Sarah to bolt after her debt was paid. Street girls never gave their loyalty to anyone but each other. By the end of the first year, though, they had become friends, and more. Sarah fell head over heels in love with Catherine, and Catherine found that her affections for her strange friend ran deeper than she would ever have expected.
Neither of them are quite certain what drew them together, or why they get along so well. Cath is a serious-minded young wolf, with a love of mathematics, while Sarah has never quite been able to give up her habit of stealing trinkets, or playing jokes on her friends. One thing they are sure of, though, is that they love each other and that there is a loyalty between them that can never be broken.
