Brigit, ever neater, seated herself primly on the edge of the mattress. "Scooch over. I get the bed tonight. You can take the rollaway."
Sitting up with a groan, Emer cast a scornful glance toward the trundle bed. "I don't think so. This whole trip was your idea, remember?"
Not, she had to admit, that it had been entirely unpleasant. There was a certain thrill in riding through Viridis in the early spring, and entirely on their own recognizance. Still, since they weren't traveling on state business, they had to make due with what their meager personal funds could encompass. "Anyone who thinks being a princess is all silk sheets and chocolates on your pillow should tag along with you sometime."
As tavern rooms went, she'd seen worse. This one was clean, at least, and it didn't smell, which put it several steps above the last one. It might have been perfect, if she'd been traveling alone, but with the two of them and their luggage, things were a little cramped.
Brigit pouted and stuck out her tongue. "Oh hush, you didn't have to come. Anyway, you had the bed last night. It's my turn."
"That's 'cause I'm older," Emer said. "Fair's fair."
"Two years. That doesn't even count! But if you're going to play it that way, you ought to have more respect for your dear old aunt."
"Oh, ought I, now?" Lunging forward, Emer grabbed Brigit and pulled her down onto the bed with her. "Maybe we'll just share then, how about that?"
"Hey!" Brigit blushed and wriggled in her grasp, but not hard enough to break free. "You're a big meanie, you know that?" But a grin crept over her face, and she made no move to get back up.
