That evening, tired and freshly showered and ready for bed, but still too excited to sleep, the girls sat up talking about nothing and everything all at once. It was then that Deborah opened a small box she'd set carefully on top of the night stand and placed it on the bed between them.
"I got us something," she said.
Molly gave a happy little wriggle and peered into the box with a puppyish enthusiasm.
"Oh, what'd you get? You shouldn't have!" she said.
In answer, Deborah held up to matching amethyst pendants strung on fine gold chains. The stones were small, but they glittered like some ancient treasure in the candlelight.
"I bought these from some nice mouse girl in the Market. She said they were magic, and that they'd help us find each other if we ever needed to," Deborah said.
Tail wagging, Molly took one of the pendants and held it up, watching it sway and shimmer in the light. Then she looked at Deborah and gave her a big grin.
"Let's put them on for each other," she said.
