Closing time. Maykere breathed a soft sigh of relief when the bell above the door jangled, signaling the departure of her last client of the day. Locking the door and closing the shutters, she hurried to the back room to fetch her most recent acquisition. As the proprietress of Viridis' first proper piercing boutique, she made a point of finding ways to make her shop more attractive and more comfortable for her clients. As of late, a number of them had requested she get a proper mirror to replace the small, handheld ones she'd had to rely on up until now. So she had scoured the markets and bazaars of her adopted homeland until, at last, she'd found one hanging in a shop in the northernmost corner of the country. It was a bizarre artifact, taller than she was with an ornate frame in the shape of a glaring dragon. Its previous owner, a shifty-eyed egret with a screeching voice had stored it in the back of her dusty shop, covered over with layers of cloth. Pulling these back now, Maykere couldn't help but remember that the egret had been very eager to sell. A little too eager, perhaps. Maykere had purchased it for a mere five Marks, a shamefully low sum for such a beautiful piece.
Shrugging the memory away, she lifted the mirror out of the corner where it stood. The thing was shockingly light, despite the ornate frame, and she carried it into the main part of her shop with no more trouble than she would a large blanket. Giddy with excitement to see how it would look, she hung it carefully on the wall and polished the glass with the sleeve of her blouse. As she did, a new idea crept into her thoughts, spurred by what she did not know. Stepping back, she slowly undressed, letting her clothes fall to the floor around her hooves. It occurred to her how pleasant it would be to work in the nude. To expose her body to her clients, and show off her own beautiful piercings, each one a shimmering golden jewel in the firelight. She drew closer to the mirror, entranced by her own natural beauty and the glittering gold.
Reaching out, she ran her fingers over the mirror, its glass shivering cold under her touch. She gasped and drew back a step.
Bright blue light filled the room, freezing her in place. The eyes of the dragon now shone with a light that pierced her to her very soul, and held her motionless as easily as any steel bands. She could feel them now, circling around her, tightening around her arms and legs, and about her throat. The taste of metal filled her mouth and all the while she couldn't take her eyes off the dragon's.
As the last of her will slipped away, she became aware of a ghostly, insidious voice drifting around her, filling her ears.
