One by one, they rose out of the water, dripping dry in the lazy afternoon sun. Blackie wandered down the shoreline a little, letting the breeze dry his fur, and spotted three good size sticks laying about two feet from the water's edge. He picked one of them up and rolled it around in his paws. It was about half his height and solid as a bone. Blackie stuck it into the soft shore sand and leaned on his stick. The wood didn't budge. It gave him an idea.\nWhen Blackie returned to the group, he was met with questioning glances all around as he was carrying the three sticks in his arms. Zal and Zuri moved aside as Blackie rejoined the group that had formed a little circle in his absence. Megan, however, was the first to speak up.\n\n\"So, what are the sticks for?\" she asked, reaching a hand out to feel one of them.\n\n\"Take a wild guess,\" Blackie said.\n\n\"Oh! A beach bonfire?\" Zal asked excitedly.\n\nBlackie laughed. \"Nope. Even better.\" Blackie grinned as William was the next to approach the small bundle of sticks. He grabbed one and knocked on it.\n\n\"Good and solid. They feel like walking sticks,\" William stated as he turned his stick over, placed the blunt end on the ground, and leaned on it.\n\n\"Exactly. What better way to dry off than a good hike through the woods?\" Blackie handed the remaining stick to Darktoast. \"There's a trail back through here that leads back to the lodge. I've heard it's really pretty in the afternoon.\"\n\n\"Well, why don't you quit telling us about it, and let's go?\" Deyna said with a smirk. She grabbed her backpack then Blackie's arm as they started off down the trail. The rest followed in turn.\n\n____________________________________________________\n\nThe trail wound through the woods, providing plenty of shade for the hikers. At the end of a slight bend in the trail, it opened up into a clearing with several good sized rocks and a beautiful view overlooking the slope of the hill they were on. Blackie stopped to let the group sit and rest in this clearing...at least the ones that had kept up. As he leaned on his walking stick, he surveyed the group at hand. Kitten was sitting on a rock, drinking some cool water out of a water bottle she had brought, as William stood beside her with his walking stick. He laid a hand on her shoulder as she smiled at him. Sherly also sat on one of the rocks gazing out over the tops of the trees that grew further down the hill. The fox-cat's eyes had a look of wonder to them. Indeed, nature was beautiful. Blackie's eyes drifted to the oncoming pair of Darktoast and Mino who were deep in conversation. He could only catch snippets of what the dragon and jaguar-calico hybrid were saying, but from the look of their faces, it must have been a lively subject. Finally, bringing up the rear were the trio of Megan, Zal, and Zuri. Even though they were last in line, they seemed to be having a blast on the hike. Zal and Zuri were in the process of helping a giggling Megan over a fallen tree. Each of them had a look of unbridled joy at being out in the wilderness, having fun, and being free of all worries. Blackie turned to climb up a rock after giving the group ample time to catch their breath, wanting to make it back to the lodge before sunset. There was an ice cream social going on tonight, and he didn't want to be late. Using his walking stick for support, Blackie helped Deyna onto the rock that led up the trail.\n\n\"I absolutely love nature hikes.
