A horde of screaming children filled the corridors of the small elementary school, laughing, shouting, slamming lockers, as they raced toward home and freedom from the vaunted halls of academia for one more day. Megan sat at her desk, as eager as any of her peers to make a break for home, but saving her energy for the long walk ahead of her. "Me, too," Megan said. "Mom had to take my brother to speech therapy, and they won't be home for a couple of hours. Wanna walk with me?"

Because it was still the first week of September, and blazing hot on the sidewalk, they took their time, not wanting to exert themselves. Along the way, they spoke of this and that, mostly gossiping about fellow students, or talking about their television shows. Before they'd gone more than a block, a tremendous crack of thunder exploded just over their heads, or so it seemed, and in moments a late summer shower drenched the pair of them to the skin.
Holding their packs over their heads, the two raced for the nearest shelter. Finding it already packed with people seeking shelter from the storm, Megan tugged on Toby's sleeve. "My house is just a little way down the road. If we run, we'll be there in no time."
