Spring. Finally! Birds sang in the trees and a warm breeze blew across the park, carrying with it the sweet scent of flowers and the happy sounds of dogs barking and people playing. Grace shivered a little with pleasure when Mistress Fiachra unclipped the leash from her collar and gave her a kiss.
"Go on, have fun. You've earned it. I'll be right here if you want me," Fiachra said.
Grace smiled and wagged her tail with delight.
"Yes, Mistress," she said.
Fiachra pressed a few coins into the palm of Grace's hand for snacks, and ruffled the vixen's hair.
"Just promise me one thing for today, pet," Fiachra said.
"Name it," Grace said.
"Be good for me today, okay? Try not to eat yourself sick on sweets and for the love of the Mother of All, keep your clothes on today, okay? The people here aren't like the ones back home and I can't afford any more trouble," Fiachra said.
"I promise," Grace said, and she gave her mistress her best smile, hoping Fiachra would believe her.
Fiachra gave her a stern look that quickly melted away into a smile before the brown-furred rabbit turned and headed for her favorite spot under a wide oak. Grace scampered off, feeling like a pup again and she spent the morning exploring the park. It was strange that even though her adopted country was covered in wild, unexplored forests, this one scrap of land that was only a few acres across could be so fascinating. She spent some time eating ice cream and watching a group of young males playing some strange game with an orange ball that they tried to put through a hoop. She plucked some flowers and spent almost an hour in a fruitless but entertaining effort to braid them into a garland. Afterward, she got some more ice cream and her wandering took her gradually into a quieter section of the park that was somewhat sheltered from the rest by a stand of trees. She was so absorbed in what she was doing that she didn't notice the wolf walking beside her until he spoke.
"You look kind of lonely," he said.
"Who, me?" she said "Well..."
As much as she enjoyed her days off, she was surprised to find he was right. She was used to having people around, and having Fiachra and her endless supply of ideas to fill in the slow times.
"Nobody should be lonely on such a beautiful day. Maybe we could walk together for a while. I mean, if you want to. I mean, I'm not trying to--"
"I'm a little tired of walking. But you're right. It is a beautiful day, and this is such a nice place, I'm sure we could find something to do," she said.
She grabbed his hand and pulled him into the trees, already pulling at her belt. Mistress Fiachra was going to kill her, but what did she expect? A girl had needs, after all, and Mistress had told her she needed to learn how to make friends!
