He was wearing flat, woolly boots and gloves on his clawed feet and hands, and he had masked his natural scent with a special perfume he had crafted from dissolved gold and silver. He even soaked his tools in the same essence and painted his usually blue scales a shiny gold. That way, the dragon would neither smell nor hear him coming. \n\nAfter tying his climbing rope around the ledge of the rocky cave entrance, Iko slowly rappelled down the sixty feet to the gleaming, gold-covered floor. Then he cautiously put down a bag and skimmed his vicinity for the most valuable treasures. A pair of egg-sized rubies here, an assortment of ancient gold coins here, a gem-studded goblet a few feet further, every single item grew the smile on his muzzle as he carefully swaddled them with pieces of cloth to keep them safe and quiet inside his bag.\n\nHowever, while the kobold tried his best not to make any noise, even breathing as quietly as he could, his excitement eventually got the better of him. After all, every single item in his bag was worth more than everything he had ever stolen so far combined! Losing track of his long tail for only a split second, he accidentally knocked over a stack of coins, and the noisy clinking that followed made him freeze up, his winning grin twisting into a pained grimace. \"Ah, shit,\" he gasped under his breath, clutching his unruly tail against his chest, but the damage was done.\n\nA deep, rumbling growl echoed through the cavernous halls as its big, mighty ruler woke from his slumber. The primal sound sent an ice-cold shiver down Iko's spine, and he hastily grabbed his bounty. \"Fuck, come on, you stupid string. Get in there!\" he cursed as he struggled to tie the bag to his belt. Then he turned around and dashed toward his escape rope, stirring a tinkling spray of coins and baubles with every step.\n\nAnother fierce snort reached the kobold's ears, informing him that the beast had begun to look for him. Fortunately, he was well-practiced in the art of running away, and he climbed up his rope with almost effortless dexterity. All the while, he kept his eyes turned toward the lumbering dragon as he shuffled across the piles of gold, sniffing the air in an attempt to locate him. \"Where are you, you pesky thief? Show yourself if you don't want me to incinerate on the spot,\" the creature growled with a voice as powerful as thunder, but his fierce demeanor couldn't hide the fact that he had not a single clue where Iko was.\n\nBy the time the owner of the hoard finally located Iko, the thief had almost reached the ledge of the cave entrance and was about to disappear into the darkness. The grin on the kobold's snout couldn't have been more jubilant. He had successfully tricked a dragon! He was rich now! He was set for life!\n\n\"What do you think you're doing?! Nobody steals from Master and gets away with it!\" an indignant snarl interrupted Iko's triumphant feeling, and when he snapped his head around, he spotted another of his kind in the cave entrance above him. A chubby, red-scaled kobold glared at him, naked to his scales aside from two dozen rings, bracelets, and necklaces. He had three strange black marks on his belly and a ceremonial, diamond-studded blade in his claws, which he moved toward the end of Iko's escape rope with unambiguous intent.\n\n\"H-hey, who are you? What are you doing there? Stop that!\" Iko yelled, but the other male ignored him and started to cut the rope. \"N-no, hold on! I'll give you half of my bounty if you stop!\"\n\n\"We don't negotiate with thieves,\" the red kobold hissed.\n\n\"Ninety percent!\"\n\nIko's offer only encouraged the other male to cut faster, but the thief managed to climb over the ledge just in time before the rope snapped and fell down into the roaring dragon's lair. With his heart pounding and adrenaline pumping through his veins, he hastily picked himself up and stumbled past the strange red kobold before he got on any other dumb ideas with that knife. \"Rot in hell, you fucking lunatic!\"\n\nUnfortunately, Iko didn't even reach the first bend of the tunnel, as two more red-scaled kobolds emerged from the shadows and blocked his way. \"Fuck, there's more of you?\" the thief blurted out. He successfully evaded the first male's attempt to grapple him, only for the other one to slam into him with his full body and knock him over.\n\nIko groaned as he crashed onto the ground, and he squealed with pain when one of his attackers dropped onto him and crudely yanked his arms and tail behind his back. Before he knew it, they tied him up with a chain of solid gold, and no matter how hard he squirmed, it wouldn't budge. \"What are you doing with me? Let me go!\"\n\nThe kobold with the knife knelt in front of Iko and growled, \"Master will decide your fate.\"\n\n\"Master? What master? What are you talking about?\" Iko yelled, but instead of answering, the other kobolds forced a gold-plated gag into his muzzle, turning his protest into defiant whines. Then they hoisted him onto their shoulders and carried him into the dark, winding cave system. The hope that they would take him outside was dashed a few minutes later, however, when the flickering, eerie glow of the dragon's underground lair enveloped him once again and the thief's eyes widened in fear as he realized that the lair's owner was right in front of him.\n\nTall as a tree and as long as a mid-sized barge with a matching pair of majestic wings, armed with pearly white teeth long as swords and shining black claws like sickles, the crimson-scaled beast returned Iko's terrified gaze from huge, slitted golden eyes. The kobold whimpered as the others set him down and removed his gag, and he desperately tried to squirm away from the dragon, but he froze completely when the scaly monster raised his thundering voice. \"Are you the one who attempted to steal from my hoard?\"\n\nTrembling like aspen leaf and with his muzzle dry as sand, Iko hastily shook his head.\n\nThe dragon bent toward the tied kobold, gusts of uncomfortably hot air emerging from the beast's flared nostrils as he sniffed him. \"You smell of gold, thief,\" he growled. Then he wrapped his menacing claws around Iko's bag of treasure, shredding it like paper to expose its sparkling content. \"And you carry parts of my treasure with you.\"\n\nIko swallowed nervously, trying to avoid eye contact with the hulking dragon as he almost passed out with fear. \"Y-yes. S-sorry. I'm s-so sorry! It won't happen again, I promise! Just, please, let me go.\"\n\nThe crimson beast shook his head and burst into throaty chuckles, the other kobolds joining with gleeful giggles. \"No. Absolutely not. I can't just let you go, thief.\"\n\n\"N-no? B-but what are you going to do instead?\" Iko whimpered.\n\n\"You have two options, kobold,\" the dragon purred and licked his lips, a devilish twinkle in his serpentine eyes. \"Either you defy me and join my belly. Or you submit to me and join my hoard.\"\n\n\"S-submit to you? Join y-your hoard?\"\n\n\"Yes. You will call me your Master and serve me just like the ones who caught you,\" the dragon explained. Then he dug his claws into the closest pile of gold and poured the coins and jewelry over the shackled kobold. \"In return, you get to enjoy all the wealth around you however you like.\"\n\nIko cast a reluctant glance at the red-scaled kobolds around him, trying to spot any signs that their master was abusing or mistreating them, but he found nothing except the strange black mark on their bellies. Aside from that, they looked healthier and much better fed than his skinny self. All three were downright plump with smooth, shiny scales and adorned with more jewelry than he had ever held in his claws. Then he placed his entire foot on his torso.\n\n\"W-what are you d-doing there, M-master?\" the kobold stammered as the dragon pushed him down with uncomfortable force, and he squirmed and whined as the claws started to heat up.\n\n\"I'm making you mine, kobold,\" the dragon growled. \"Now take a deep breath and relax. This will only hurt for a moment.\"\n\nIko howled and tears flowed down his cheeks as the heat surged from unpleasant to completely unbearable.
