"writing": "It was yet another unassuming house, tucked in some suburb just along the edge of some deep woods. Those in the city tended to avoid this quiet little neighbourhood… Something about it had an eerie quality...\n\nOutside, the lawn was a little overgrown and the dark paint was peeling. The grass was scattered with well loved toys, and despite it all nothing was falling apart… It was all held tightly together by a flustered parent’s efforts, and all the love she had…\n\nThere she was. Stood in the kitchen, hips swaying subtly to some unseen song. She was cutting veggies to put in the meal she’d make… She had to stand sideways, (and on a stool for her shortness), because her tummy was big enough to make it a problem…\n\nA small set of eyes stared from the entrance to the kitchen, sparkling with wonder at the efforts motherhood took.\n\nHer mind wandered to last night, as she was sat in her bed with her Mama beside her. The witch, whose species was a little mysterious but was certainly ghostly, wove such fantastic tales that the little girl’s dreams were always vivid… Yet, one was always more bright than others;\n\nThe story about the superstar, stood in front of an adoring crowd… And just as round and heavy as mama always was.\n\nThe knife clattered, and the girl was brought back to reality. Mama had dropped what she was doing, and leaned heavily against the counter with a low sigh…\n\nThe little one got tense. What could be wrong? She chanced a few steps out, but then retreated to hide immediately as Mama waddled off her little stepping stool and back onto the ground…\n\nHer pretty purple dress bulged at the front with a heavy enough pregnancy that it was almost surprising she was upright. Every doctor would have told her this was too much, and yet she was always so cheerful as she struggled to waddle from place to place…\n\nShe was a strange woman to call mama. She called herself a witch, and had a dark sense of fashion. The little one always thought that she’d dress up much more colourfully when she was older…\n\nMama turned and picked up a phone. She started dialling, but again dropped what she was doing. This time she doubled over and gripped her middle firmly…\n\n“Heeee… Haaaah… Oh… That’s not good…”\n\nThe eyes from the doorway widened. Something was wrong with mama’s belly?! She knew there was a baby in there. Much had been taught to her; not in any lewd way, but Mama had no reason to hide details. Her daughter would learn eventually after all… Better to learn now, when it was safe. But this part was always hazy… Mama was in pain, she was crouched over her tummy and breathing hard, and in a strange way…\n\n“...Gah, I don’t… I don’t really have time for a babysitter… I don’t… Oh do I even have time to get to a hospital…?”\n\n“Hospital!?”\n\nThe squeaked word made the short ghostly mama turn with a gasp. She looked very flustered, and though the entryway was empty and dim, she knew…\n\nShe chuckled shakily and ran a sleeved arm through her hair… “Baby girl… Don’t be shy… Come here.”\n\nThere was silence, and for a moment one might have wondered if the child had turned to run off. But she scooted slowly out, hands behind her back and staring at the ground…\n\n“Sorry mama…”\n\n“There’s nothing to be sorry about…” Mama said, her voice soft but… A little distracted. It was the voice she used when she was busily doing something else and still trying to give her daughter attention…\n\nBut right now, the only thing she was ‘doing’ was massaging her tummy…\n\nShe beckoned again. The girl wrung her hands, but then quickly went forward and stared up at the heavily swollen purple tummy suspended there in front of her…\n\n“You can touch, go on… I know you’re curious. You always have so many questions for mommy…”\n\nBut at the moment, she couldn’t think of anything. Or perhaps it was that all of the thoughts hit at the same time, crashing into a worthless pile up that she couldn’t sort out.\n\nShe was too intensely focused on her mommy’s tummy. It was tight… Different than all the times she’d felt it. The baby inside, singular and huge, was unusually still…\n\n“Her home is very compressed right now. Squeezed together. She barely has any room to-”\n\nKICK!\n\nMama pulled away. Her daughter followed nervously, clinging to the hem of her dress and staring with concern… Then she released in surprise as Mama leaned over the trash can and made a noise like she was going to get sick…\n\n“Mama!? Is it the baby?! Is she hurting you?!”\n\nShe was panicking immediately. Once it was clear she wasn’t going to actually get sick, the ghostly mother weakly chuckled…\n\n“Yes… Yes it is the baby, and yes she’s hurting me, but… You don’t have to be scared... In fact…”\n\nShe stood straighter and turned back. Despite apparently being in pain, she put a fatigued smile on…\n\n“In fact, you’ll be meeting her tonight…”\n\nThe baby was coming!!!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe tiny female wrung fistfuls of her shiny pink hair nervously as she paced, watching mama talk on the phone. Talk to someone about car rides, wait times, and…\n\nShe put the phone down abruptly and breathed out hard… One of her sleeves hadn’t left the side of her middle…\n\n“Damn it…” she muttered, before glancing over her shoulder at her daughter…\n\n“...sorry. Well, it’s apparently a bit of a busy night… Mm… Mama isn’t really going to be able to make it to a hospital to have her baby… Not in time. And…”\n\nWhatever other explanation she was going to give, she stopped and set her forehead against the cabinet. She breathed out hard again, and this time she gave a small cringing whimper, thumping her foot almost brattily against the tile…\n\n“...okay… okay… Sweetheart? T-This baby is coming now, and mama might need help…”\n\nThe little girl’s mind reeled in shock and excitement. She walked up to her mama haltingly; eager to help and yet terrified of the situation. She’d almost never seen mama so upset… And yet, so calm at the same time…\n\n“It looks like you have a bad tummy ache, mama…”\n\n“It’s the baby, love. She’s coming out, and she’s coming right now. Do you remember what your baby book said about this part…?”\n\nThe girl furrowed her brow to remember. Yes. Something about mommy lying down at the hospital, and…\n\n“...it comes out between your legs… From your...?”\n\nShe was cut short. The ghost suddenly moved a few feet away and then paused, trembling in the doorway…\n\nA puddle spread under her. And after she stopped shaking, she pulled herself up and moved off quickly… Down the hall and up the stairs…\n\n“...mama…?”\n\nThe girl glanced at the abandoned dinner, then back towards where her mother had fled. She wasn’t upset about not getting food… No, she was shocked her mama hadn’t fed her…\n\n...she hadn’t gone without a good meal in… maybe ever… This must have been bad...\n\nShe turned the stove off, and then ran after her ailing parent, nearly in tears…\n\nWhen she found her mama, it was in the bathroom. She was…\n\n...climbing into the tub? But she still had her dress on… And the water wasn’t running…\n\n“Mama…”\n\nThe little girl walked up to the side of the tub quickly and peered down into it. Her mother was laid against the wall behind her, breathing softly but with an obvious tremble to her soft gasps. One hand was on her tummy, the other grasping the edge of the tub very tightly. Her eyes were closed, and she seemed to be in an intense amount of pain… Her expression was one of concentration and effort, but her little daughter knew nothing of what was going on within. In her panicked and unaware mind, she just knew that something was very wrong with that perfect heavy roundness on her mama’s front…\n\nThe baby. Her mind swayed back and forth between the idea of the pregnancy merely being an adorable ‘accessory’ to her mama, and to it being a little sibling she’d soon have to interact with…\n\nStaring down at the writhing ghost, the two thoughts began to move closer, slowly against one another, until the lines blurred entirely. That belly WAS her little sister, and mama was… \n\n...was…? What would happen next…?\n\n“...baby…”\n\nThe little girl perked excitedly…\n\n“Yes mama…”\n\n“Mama… Is… Going to push her baby out into the world… I need you to… to…”\n\nPush… Push?\n\nHer little eyes looked down upon the belly again, staring quietly as she found herself drowning out every instruction given to focus on her unravelling understanding, and her attempts to put it all back together…\n\nMama was in pain… Her baby sister was inside that tummy. Mama said she was going to push her out… What was the word…? Her child’s book on having babies ended with the mother there in the hospital bed, with a big frown on her face as her tummy hurt.\n\nA giant tummy ache… Push.\n\nThat word was the only one that didn’t make sense. She stared at the tummy she was now forced to confront, and furrowed her brow. After a few moments, she blinked softly and gasped as she realized her mama was still talking…\n\n“...and… and if I can just… Do that it should be… Be… Hoooh…”\n\nMama leaned back and draped her arm across her forehead…\n\n“...this little one is not so little… Sweetheart… I… need to...”\n\nShe flinched hard and bit her sleeve suddenly. The little girl’s eyes widened… She remembered. She knew how it all fit together in her book… Belly… Baby… And one more word…\n\n“...birth, mama…?”\n\nThe ghost thumped her other arm down a couple times on the edge of the tub. It scared her daughter back, but she finally spat her sleeve out and gave a soft, agonized gasp…\n\n“...yes baby girl… Time for mommy to give birth…”\nObviously, the little girl had no clue how to help her mother. How could she? She was getting her live demonstration, then and there...\n\nIt was clear the ghost didn’t want her to have anything to do with it. She knew that her little one was TOO little to be participating… But she had no choice. The hospital she had called couldn’t get her there in time…\n\nBut that wasn’t much of an obstacle to a mother like her. At least, she sincerely hoped…\n\n“...devil don’t take me now… I have two little ones to care for… I’m not ready…”\n\nShe opened her eyes and lifted her head to look as her daughter returned. Awkwardly, the little thing had found a towel and washcloth, and had gotten a water bottle from the fridge, (though mama had heard a clatter and crash, it was far and away the least important problem right now).\n\nShe couldn’t do much else. She sat them nearby, and mama took them. The towel was carefully folded and set between her legs just under her hips. The cloth was ordered to be wetted with nice cold water, and then mama gently dabbed it against her forehead…\n\nWhen the next contraction came, she squeezed all the water out of it with her grasp. She let out a sharp cry after the contraction had finished, panting desperately…\n\n“...oh… Oh damn… I-I mean, ah… She’s so impatient…”\n\n“...it’s a girl, mama…?”\n\n“Yes… Yes, dear… Remember? Mama told you…”\n\nIndeed. It had been some months back, so it might as well have been eternity to the child. She was having a sister… That made that belly even more important in her sparkling eyes, as she watched her mama take a long drink…\n\n“Pah… Hah…”\n\nShe had downed nearly the entire thing in one go. The girl was stunned…\n“...Mama… Mama needs to… To not overheat or… Or it could hurt the…”\n\n...baby. She was losing the ability to even speak for the amount of pain she was in. For a moment, the fascination of the oncoming little sister was replaced with worry for her mother…\n\nThe ghost suddenly curled her hands into fists. She pushed them hard against the edges of the tub and curled forward…\n\nShe made a very scary noise… An almost roaring scream of effort. The girl backed away again, but heard more fluids hitting the tub…\n\nMama slumped back and panted. She seemed entirely distracted from her girl, who was gingerly peering over the edge again...\n\nShe stared in bewilderment… In the background, Mama dabbed the half dried cloth to her forehead. Tears were leaking down from the corners of her eyes, but her expression remained calm, if fatigued already…\n\n“...this will be a long night…”\n\nShe managed to huff, as her daughter stared between her legs…\n\nThe final piece. The biggest part that her naive little mind was missing; push the baby out. But from where? The most obvious answer in her child mind was the belly button. What else was it there for?\n\nBut she saw mama’s intimate parts bulging and bleeding and dribbling fluids. She saw her belly clench and that huge mass shift through her, visibly forcing its way along her tummy and at her entrance…\n\nThe girl pushed her thighs tightly together, horrified… Her perspective had changed in an instant: Who in their right mind would EVER subject themselves to this? Mama had apparently done it ‘countless times’, and yet here she was doing it again?\n\nThe ghostly mother arched her back and cried out. She gave a distressed scream and writhed in the tub…\n\n“Mama…!” the girl shrieked in surprise...\n\nMama said nothing, but the cloth was dropped to the tile and mama’s hand darted out… It took her daughter’s…\n\nDespite all impulses, she was supremely gentle even now… She squeezed her first baby’s hand, while her second one wriggled inside her and weighed on her pelvis…\n\nPain… That’s all that the little girl saw right now. Mama had been put through this pain and for what? This was madness. There couldn’t be anything worth this effort and agony…\n\nShe stayed by her mama’s side and held her hand as the ghost fell into a routine… Lay back, breathing slowly… Preparing yourself… Tensing… She barely spoke now, just getting ready for the…\n\nSqueeze!\n\nThe contractions were immensely strong. The ghost had often carried babies that were impatient, but this one wasn’t. She was taking her sweet time idly laying in there, getting a bit overdue and oversized. Now she seemed to be doing everything she could to inflict every bit of devlish torment she could on her mommy…\n\nWhen the push was done, and mama was done cursing under her breath or screaming in pain, she slumped back and ached, and waited for it to happen again. Again, and again the contractions wracked her body angrily. Again she screamed and pushed while her daughter observed with a mix of intense worry, excitement, and fascination... \n\nAfter what felt like an eon, the giant newborn had made its sluggish pace through its mama’s body. The ghost was desperate to simply close her eyes and make the pain go away. Indeed, in a moment of weakness she mentally echoed her daughter’s thoughts that there seemed to be no reason to go through all of this…\n\n...ah, her daughter…\n\nShe opened her eyes and looked up at the concerned gleam of her baby girl’s expression. The innocent and pure hope that mama would be okay soon, and that nothing was wrong with the clenching, dropped tummy that the young girl’s eyes kept darting to…\n\nMama shakily reached up… Touched the side of her face… Then she wiped her tears and turned…\n\nThe girl let go of her mama’s hand and stepped back once more. She looked down as she felt a squish under her foot, then crouched to pick up the cloth. She turned and moved across the bathroom quickly…\n\nMama didn’t notice. She had far more to focus on right now. She set her knees wide as she could and put one hand on her middle…\n\nShe hissed a stream of obscenities softly to herself, like she was helplessly watching her car go over a cliff. She clutched her middle tightly and growled at the baby within. They gave a weak little kick of annoyance, but no matter how weak, each kick was like a knife straight through her abdomen. Tears gathered at the edges of her eyes as her whispers of anger turned to pleas for relief…\n\nSomething touched her blazing forehead. Something cool and soft…\n\nShe turned to look. Her daughter had wetted the cloth again and was rubbing it along her forehead, a little too rough, and with a little too much water so that it dripped down her mama’s already sweat soaked face…\n\n...and yet, mama’s eyes widened slowly and her expression became just a little more confident…\n\nShe took her daughter’s arm to stop her, and met her eyes. The poor little girl had tears forming streaks down her face, but her own expression was firm and determined…\n\nMama reached out and helped her daughter into the tub. It was clear the little one was not going to leave…\n\n“We’ll get it out mama… It won’t hurt you…!”\n\nMama held her baby against her… Her face set gently in her daughter’s hair, and she took a few weak breaths…\n\n“...yes dear… Yes… We’ll get her out… I need you to do something for mommy…”\n\n“Anything!”\n\n“...Count to three with mama…”\n\nThe girl was moved to cling to her mama’s side. It wasn’t so long ago she did this because she was small enough to be carried everywhere. Now she was hugged up against her mama and putting her hand on mama’s knee, the other clutching her arm as she watched the belly…\n\nIt rose and fell… It twitched and quivered... Once more, the girl was mesmerised, as her mama sat there and heaved her breaths… She was trying very hard not to scream again…\n\n“Ready, dear…?”\n\nThe girl nodded hard…\n\n“...o… One…”\n\n“One…”\n\nThe girl saw her mama tense. Her legs were wide apart, and she closed her eyes again. The girl dabbed away sweat and cooled her off…\n\n“Two…!”\n\nTwo, they said it together. The belly visible clenched inwards… Tightening before their eyes…\n\nThe girl looked up at her mama. She saw a note of panic… But to her astonishment, there was also that endless serenity below it all… That maternal glow that never seemed to go away… Even now? While the baby inside her was tearing her to pieces and putting her through such pain…?\n\nWhy did she still seem so ready to be a mother…?\n\n“...three, mama…!”\n\nOnly the girl said it that time. Mama needed no encouragement. She curled into her belly and set her jaw. The girl clung to her tighter, her nails even digging in a bit as she witnessed the incredibly intimate act that is bringing a baby into the world…\n\nThe ghost finally began to shout again… Desperate growling shrieks of effort. Her daughter squeezed her eyes shut and pushed her face into her mama’s side…\n\n“...push, mama… push!” she nearly whispered… Again, mama needed no encouragement… And yet, those little words seemed to make her double her efforts…\n\n“HHHHAAAAAAAAH!!!”\n\n“MAMA!”\n\nAnd then suddenly, the ghost slumped back hard… Oh no. Oh no! Oh no oh no ohnoohnoohno…!\n\n“Mama?!”\n\nBut she was still breathing… In fact, she looked far more relaxed… The girl blinked and untangled herself from her mama’s arm and moved quickly down to peer between her legs…\n\nShe saw the head of her sister settled softly on the towel folded there. The little Ralts baby squirmed and made fussy little noises. Mama just laid back and recovered, so she could get the rest of them out…\n\nBut the girl… Her daughter…\n\n...was transfixed…\n\nShe had gotten her answer in this moment. Why was mama still wanting to be a mama? Because the thing in her body was a baby… Something that the girl couldn’t understand properly until she witnessed it outright. Her mind exploded and stars swirled excitedly in her eyes as she observed the beginning of a new life… One that had gestated within mommy’s very body for months… Taking its toll, draining the body of its host carelessly until mama was a worn out mess… And after all of that, mama was then forced to go through all of this hard work to get her out and…\n\n...and it was still worth it. Anything would be worth it… The little girl knew that now… She couldn’t avoid it…\n\nHer destiny was written in that moment, across the night’s sky...\n\nHer face reddened in surprise as mama sat up a bit and gave another firm push, with a weak groan. The baby’s shoulders slipped partway out, and then back in when mama relaxed. She had to try a few times, and all the while the little girl was utterly fascinated. The image would be entwined with the sight of a pregnant belly in her mind for the rest of her days…\n\nMama put forth a firm effort, and a whimper. The baby’s shoulders slipped out, and finally with that the scales were tipped. With nothing more than a gentle few pushes, the baby slipped out and onto the soft towel…\n\nThe girl watched her mother go entirely limp. She was like a wet dress that had just been draped across the tub; drooping, entirely still, and flat… though as the girl noticed, her tummy still had a strangely appealing fattened shape to it now. Seemed even the belly wouldn’t leave forever.\n\nHer heart skipped a beat and she smiled. She pushed past mama’s leg and crouched next to the Ralts in the tub, tilting her head…\n\nCovered in goo… Fussing harder… With a strange cord attached to their tummy… Ooohh… that’s what the belly button was!\n\nGingerly, and after a long hesitation, the girl reached down and awkwardly put her arms around her new sister…\n\n“...whuff…”\n\nShe was a very large baby… The girl struggled, especially as the little thing fussed and moaned. But soon she was set in mama’s tired arms, and within a few minutes of recovery and adjusting, she was nursing…\n\n“...thank you, sweetheart…”\n\nThe girl looked up, and couldn’t hold back a charmed smile. Mama chuckled…\n\n“Without you… I couldn’t have done this, I don’t think… Look at how big she is… Haha… Wow…”\n\n“...mama?”\n\n“Yes dear…”\n\n“Can I be a mama too…?”\n\n\n===\n\n\n“...someday, little one… Someday…”\n\nMama kissed the girl on the forehead, remembering that night. It wasn’t too long ago, and in fact she still ached from the pushing. But after she had recovered enough, she’d taken her girls to bed and slept hard. Then she’d taken them both to the hospital and gotten her newborn a clean bill of health…\n\nNow it was a few weeks later. Mama was stood over her girl, who had insisted she be told a bedtime story. And this time, it was a story she had written herself...\n\n‘Tell me how I helped my sister be born, mama…!’\n\nMama chuckled and petted her hand softly through her sleeping daughter’s hair. Already she could tell, seeing her sister be born had changed her. She was already asking when mama was gonna have the next…\n\nThe girl was given a kiss on the forehead before Mama turned to leave. She paused and leaned over the crib that currently held the large Ralts, curled on their side and suckling a soother. She placed the blanket up over their body and was about to leave… and then stopped and smiled…\n\nThe girl had slept in the crib until quite recently. Above it hung a decoration; a simple wooden letter, to make the room more her own...\n\nMama reached up, and took the letter down. She walked back over, and hung the ‘J’ above her sleeping daughter’s new bed…\n\nThen she turned, and exited the room, humming a soft and mysterious tune. She was…

...climbing into the tub? But she still had her dress on… And the water wasn’t running…

“Mama…”

The little girl walked up to the side of the tub quickly and peered down into it. In her panicked and unaware mind, she just knew that something was very wrong with that perfect heavy roundness on her mama’s front…

The baby. Her mind swayed back and forth between the idea of the pregnancy merely being an adorable ‘accessory’ to her mama, and to it being a little sibling she’d soon have to interact with…

Staring down at the writhing ghost, the two thoughts began to move closer, slowly against one another, until the lines blurred entirely. That belly WAS her little sister, and mama was…

...was…? What would happen next…?

“...baby…”

The little girl perked excitedly…

“Yes mama…”

“Mama… Is… Going to push her baby out into the world… I need you to… to…”

Push… Push?

Her little eyes looked down upon the belly again, staring quietly as she found herself drowning out every instruction given to focus on her unravelling understanding, and her attempts to put it all back together…

Mama was in pain… Her baby sister was inside that tummy. Mama said she was going to push her out… What was the word…? Her child’s book on having babies ended with the mother there in the hospital bed, with a big frown on her face as her tummy hurt.

A giant tummy ache… Push.

That word was the only one that didn’t make sense. She stared at the tummy she was now forced to confront, and furrowed her brow. After a few moments, she blinked softly and gasped as she realized her mama was still talking…

“...and… and if I can just… Do that it should be… Be… Hoooh…”

Mama leaned back and draped her arm across her forehead…

“...this little one is not so little… Sweetheart… I… need to...”

She flinched hard and bit her sleeve suddenly. The little girl’s eyes widened… She remembered. She knew how it all fit together in her book… Belly… Baby… And one more word…

“...birth, mama…?”

The ghost thumped her other arm down a couple times on the edge of the tub. It scared her daughter back, but she finally spat her sleeve out and gave a soft, agonized gasp…

“...yes baby girl… Time for mommy to give birth…”
Obviously, the little girl had no clue how to help her mother. How could she? She was getting her live demonstration, then and there...

It was clear the ghost didn’t want her to have anything to do with it. She knew that her little one was TOO little to be participating… But she had no choice. The hospital she had called couldn’t get her there in time…

But that wasn’t much of an obstacle to a mother like her. At least, she sincerely hoped…

“...devil don’t take me now… I have two little ones to care for… I’m not ready…”

She opened her eyes and lifted her head to look as her daughter returned. Awkwardly, the little thing had found a towel and washcloth, and had gotten a water bottle from the fridge, (though mama had heard a clatter and crash, it was far and away the least important problem right now).

She couldn’t do much else. She sat them nearby, and mama took them. The towel was carefully folded and set between her legs just under her hips. The cloth was ordered to be wetted with nice cold water, and then mama gently dabbed it against her forehead…

When the next contraction came, she squeezed all the water out of it with her grasp. She let out a sharp cry after the contraction had finished, panting desperately…

“...oh… Oh damn… I-I mean, ah… She’s so impatient…”

“...it’s a girl, mama…?”

“Yes… Yes, dear… Remember? Mama told you…”

Indeed. It had been some months back, so it might as well have been eternity to the child. She was having a sister… That made that belly even more important in her sparkling eyes, as she watched her mama take a long drink…

“Pah… Hah…”

She had downed nearly the entire thing in one go. The girl was stunned…
“...Mama… Mama needs to… To not overheat or… Or it could hurt the…”

...baby. She was losing the ability to even speak for the amount of pain she was in. For a moment, the fascination of the oncoming little sister was replaced with worry for her mother…

The ghost suddenly curled her hands into fists. She pushed them hard against the edges of the tub and curled forward…

She made a very scary noise… An almost roaring scream of effort. The girl backed away again, but heard more fluids hitting the tub…

Mama slumped back and panted. She seemed entirely distracted from her girl, who was gingerly peering over the edge again...

She stared in bewilderment… In the background, Mama dabbed the half dried cloth to her forehead. Tears were leaking down from the corners of her eyes, but her expression remained calm, if fatigued already…

“...this will be a long night…”

She managed to huff, as her daughter stared between her legs…

The final piece. The biggest part that her naive little mind was missing; push the baby out. But from where? The most obvious answer in her child mind was the belly button. What else was it there for?

But she saw mama’s intimate parts bulging and bleeding and dribbling fluids. She saw her belly clench and that huge mass shift through her, visibly forcing its way along her tummy and at her entrance…

The girl pushed her thighs tightly together, horrified… Her perspective had changed in an instant: Who in their right mind would EVER subject themselves to this? Mama had apparently done it ‘countless times’, and yet here she was doing it again?

The ghostly mother arched her back and cried out. She gave a distressed scream and writhed in the tub…

“Mama…!” the girl shrieked in surprise...

Mama said nothing, but the cloth was dropped to the tile and mama’s hand darted out… It took her daughter’s…

Despite all impulses, she was supremely gentle even now… She squeezed her first baby’s hand, while her second one wriggled inside her and weighed on her pelvis…

Pain… That’s all that the little girl saw right now. Mama had been put through this pain and for what? This was madness. There couldn’t be anything worth this effort and agony…

She stayed by her mama’s side and held her hand as the ghost fell into a routine… Lay back, breathing slowly… Preparing yourself… Tensing… She barely spoke now, just getting ready for the…

Squeeze!

The contractions were immensely strong. The ghost had often carried babies that were impatient, but this one wasn’t. She was taking her sweet time idly laying in there, getting a bit overdue and oversized. Now she seemed to be doing everything she could to inflict every bit of devlish torment she could on her mommy…

When the push was done, and mama was done cursing under her breath or screaming in pain, she slumped back and ached, and waited for it to happen again. Again, and again the contractions wracked her body angrily. Again she screamed and pushed while her daughter observed with a mix of intense worry, excitement, and fascination...

After what felt like an eon, the giant newborn had made its sluggish pace through its mama’s body. The ghost was desperate to simply close her eyes and make the pain go away. Indeed, in a moment of weakness she mentally echoed her daughter’s thoughts that there seemed to be no reason to go through all of this…

...ah, her daughter…

She opened her eyes and looked up at the concerned gleam of her baby girl’s expression. The innocent and pure hope that mama would be okay soon, and that nothing was wrong with the clenching, dropped tummy that the young girl’s eyes kept darting to…

Mama shakily reached up… Touched the side of her face… Then she wiped her tears and turned…

The girl let go of her mama’s hand and stepped back once more. She looked down as she felt a squish under her foot, then crouched to pick up the cloth. She turned and moved across the bathroom quickly…

Mama didn’t notice. She had far more to focus on right now. She set her knees wide as she could and put one hand on her middle…

She hissed a stream of obscenities softly to herself, like she was helplessly watching her car go over a cliff. She clutched her middle tightly and growled at the baby within. They gave a weak little kick of annoyance, but no matter how weak, each kick was like a knife straight through her abdomen. Tears gathered at the edges of her eyes as her whispers of anger turned to pleas for relief…

Something touched her blazing forehead. Something cool and soft…

She turned to look. Her daughter had wetted the cloth again and was rubbing it along her forehead, a little too rough, and with a little too much water so that it dripped down her mama’s already sweat soaked face…

...and yet, mama’s eyes widened slowly and her expression became just a little more confident…

She took her daughter’s arm to stop her, and met her eyes. The poor little girl had tears forming streaks down her face, but her own expression was firm and determined…

Mama reached out and helped her daughter into the tub. It was clear the little one was not going to leave…

“We’ll get it out mama… It won’t hurt you…!”

Mama held her baby against her… Her face set gently in her daughter’s hair, and she took a few weak breaths…

“...yes dear… Yes… We’ll get her out… I need you to do something for mommy…”

“Anything!”

“...Count to three with mama…”

The girl was moved to cling to her mama’s side. It wasn’t so long ago she did this because she was small enough to be carried everywhere. Now she was hugged up against her mama and putting her hand on mama’s knee, the other clutching her arm as she watched the belly…

It rose and fell… It twitched and quivered... Once more, the girl was mesmerised, as her mama sat there and heaved her breaths… She was trying very hard not to scream again…

“Ready, dear…?”

The girl nodded hard…

“...o… One…”

“One…”

The girl saw her mama tense. Her legs were wide apart, and she closed her eyes again. The girl dabbed away sweat and cooled her off…

“Two…!”

Two, they said it together. The belly visible clenched inwards… Tightening before their eyes…

The girl looked up at her mama. She saw a note of panic… But to her astonishment, there was also that endless serenity below it all… That maternal glow that never seemed to go away… Even now? While the baby inside her was tearing her to pieces and putting her through such pain…?

Why did she still seem so ready to be a mother…?

“...three, mama…!”

Only the girl said it that time. Mama needed no encouragement. She curled into her belly and set her jaw. The girl clung to her tighter, her nails even digging in a bit as she witnessed the incredibly intimate act that is bringing a baby into the world…

The ghost finally began to shout again… Desperate growling shrieks of effort. Her daughter squeezed her eyes shut and pushed her face into her mama’s side…

“...push, mama… push!” she nearly whispered… Again, mama needed no encouragement… And yet, those little words seemed to make her double her efforts…

“HHHHAAAAAAAAH!!!”

“MAMA!”

And then suddenly, the ghost slumped back hard… Oh no. Oh no! Oh no oh no ohnoohnoohno…!

“Mama?!”

But she was still breathing… In fact, she looked far more relaxed… The girl blinked and untangled herself from her mama’s arm and moved quickly down to peer between her legs…

She saw the head of her sister settled softly on the towel folded there. The little Ralts baby squirmed and made fussy little noises. Mama just laid back and recovered, so she could get the rest of them out…

But the girl… Her daughter…

...was transfixed…

She had gotten her answer in this moment. Why was mama still wanting to be a mama? Because the thing in her body was a baby… Something that the girl couldn’t understand properly until she witnessed it outright. Her mind exploded and stars swirled excitedly in her eyes as she observed the beginning of a new life… One that had gestated within mommy’s very body for months… Taking its toll, draining the body of its host carelessly until mama was a worn out mess… And after all of that, mama was then forced to go through all of this hard work to get her out and…

...and it was still worth it. Anything would be worth it… The little girl knew that now… She couldn’t avoid it…

Her destiny was written in that moment, across the night’s sky...

Her face reddened in surprise as mama sat up a bit and gave another firm push, with a weak groan. The baby’s shoulders slipped partway out, and then back in when mama relaxed. She had to try a few times, and all the while the little girl was utterly fascinated. The image would be entwined with the sight of a pregnant belly in her mind for the rest of her days…

Mama put forth a firm effort, and a whimper. The baby’s shoulders slipped out, and finally with that the scales were tipped. With nothing more than a gentle few pushes, the baby slipped out and onto the soft towel…

The girl watched her mother go entirely limp. She was like a wet dress that had just been draped across the tub; drooping, entirely still, and flat… though as the girl noticed, her tummy still had a strangely appealing fattened shape to it now. Seemed even the belly wouldn’t leave forever.

Her heart skipped a beat and she smiled. She pushed past mama’s leg and crouched next to the Ralts in the tub, tilting her head…

Covered in goo… Fussing harder… With a strange cord attached to their tummy… Ooohh… that’s what the belly button was!

Gingerly, and after a long hesitation, the girl reached down and awkwardly put her arms around her new sister…

“...whuff…”

She was a very large baby… The girl struggled, especially as the little thing fussed and moaned. But soon she was set in mama’s tired arms, and within a few minutes of recovery and adjusting, she was nursing…

“...thank you, sweetheart…”

The girl looked up, and couldn’t hold back a charmed smile. Mama chuckled…

“Without you… I couldn’t have done this, I don’t think… Look at how big she is… Haha… Wow…”

“...mama?”

“Yes dear…”

“Can I be a mama too…?”

===

“...someday, little one… Someday…”

Mama kissed the girl on the forehead, remembering that night. It wasn’t too long ago, and in fact she still ached from the pushing. But after she had recovered enough, she’d taken her girls to bed and slept hard. Then she’d taken them both to the hospital and gotten her newborn a clean bill of health…

Now it was a few weeks later.
