They are humans who's ancestors lived in a village that was being violent towards other humanoid races. The Treun, a group of humanoid hired heroes, were called in to help and lured the town's army away from the village. Then they took the village for themselves and set up camp there. When the army returned they found the village stripped of its resources and the townspeople kidnapped by the Treun. This caused the humans to start a racist campaign against all other races and they conquered most of Valhalor and destroyed everything in their wake before they were eventually stopped. Due to the delicate situation the townspeople couldn't be returned and instead were put under the care of the Gomuun, a race of mutants that were very much the enemy of the humans. The townspeople became their slaves and adopted the name Strap but absorbed the Gomuun culture and began to hate their original civilization. When they were granted their freedom they chose to stay with the Gomuun as free people and not to return to their own culture. Zack himself is very proud of his ancestry of servitude and wholeheartedly approves of slavery despite its obvious problems. It was always going to be difficult to write a slave character as the manservant of Jason Gobbuck and making him black was a huge mistake. However, Zack himself points out the differences between his people's slavery compared to that of the slave trade in America. He himself is very much opposed to the slave trade that happened in our world and treats it as a horrible thing. His slavery ancestry on the other hand was very different as slaves had a lot more rights and were treated rather fairly. It could be this that clouds Zack's judgement regarding the slave trade he's involved in as he tends to see it through Rose colored spectacles rather than the actual nightmare it is. This adds a lot of depth to the character on many levels and makes for good writing.
