The young lion was curled into a loose ball deep within the tall grass that grew at the base of Pride Rock. Nala was snuggled warmly against his side, anxiously gazing back at him with her tender teal eyes. He could feel every breath she took, every beat of her heart, as though their bodies in this moment were one and the same. The girl’s presence had an extremely calming effect on Simba, allowing his mind to fight through the fog as he struggled to explain the emotions raging within. “It’s…like I’m fighting with myself.”\n\n“Does this have something to do with your nightmares?” Nala gently probed.\n\n“How did you –”\n\n“I heard you talking in your sleep last night,” the young lioness explained. “You were shaking a lot and kept mumbling something about hyenas… Is that why you’ve been so tired lately?”\n\n“Yeah,” Simba nodded sadly before pausing to rub his face with his paws. “I’ve been having really scary dreams ever since that night you were taken. But it’s not just that… I… I keep thinking about what happened with the hyenas and…how you almost…how we almost…” The cub gasped as tears formed in the corners of his eyes. He hated this feeling of helplessness. He hated that Nala had seen him in this state. But there was nothing he could do about it. \n\n“It’s okay, Simba,” Nala nodded patiently as she gently squeezed his paw with her own.\n\nSimba shook his head in frustration, his gaze fixated on the ground. “No, it’s not… When you said you wanted to go on an adventure…all I could think about was what would happen if you got hurt again. Nala, I…” Simba hesitated as his tongue resisted what his heart wanted to say. “I…I can’t lose you again!”\n\nNala gazed longingly into her friend’s tormented eyes, momentarily stunned by his candid admission. “But…you didn’t lose me,” the girl softly whispered. “Simba, you saved me.”\n\n“I thought I had lost you,” the prince muttered in response. “Nala…I didn’t think you were going to ever wake up. I thought you were… I…I don’t think I can go through that again.”\n\n“Simba…” Nala sat in silence as she struggled to find some way to cheer up her best friend. She had been genuinely surprised by the cub’s confession. This whole time, the reason he was so tired and agitated was because he was worried about her. It was clearly an unhealthy response to the trauma they had suffered, but at the same time, Nala found it to be strangely sweet. He cared for her so much that it was literally making him sick. There had to be something she could do to help him. “Hey,” the girl finally whispered, chuckling as she nudged the prince with her elbow. “You remember how scared I was after we went to the elephant graveyard? I didn’t leave the den for days!”\n\n“Oh, yeah,” a smile briefly flickered across Simba’s muzzle as he recalled his past efforts to get the young lioness to join him on another adventure. “I didn’t think you’d ever play with me again!”\n\n“I was terrified,” Nala nodded in agreement. “But then you finally convinced me to help you play that prank on Zazu, and I guess it helped me to get over my fears. Maybe if we just did something easy it could help you get back to normal?”\n\nSimba shook his head, unconvinced by the girl’s suggestion. “I don’t know, Nala,” he sighed, “it’s not really the same thing.” The cub paused to raise back into a sitting position. His eyes blankly focused on something in the distance even as he gently stroked the fur on Nala’s back with his paw. “Those hyenas…they said something about having a boss. That means someone must have told them to kill us. What if they’re still out there?”\n\n“Then we’ll do what we always do,” Nala replied determinedly as she also sat up. “We’ll face them together.” The young lioness suddenly threw her paws around Simba’s shoulders and embraced him in a comforting hug. She didn’t know how to help her friend overcome his fears. She didn’t know how to stop his nightmares. All she could do was be there for him, just like he was always there for her. “You know,” Nala grinned slyly as a thought crossed her mind, “I think we’ve had this conversation before.”\n“We have?”\n\n“Yeah! Remember that day we fought that big snake in the jungle? I told you not to worry about me so much. It was right after the first time we…” With a seductive smirk on her muzzle, Nala roughly shoved Simba onto his back before collapsing on top of him. Propping herself up on her elbows, the girl floated just above Simba’s body as she stared down enticingly into his big auburn eyes. \n\n“Nala,” Simba chuckled as a grin slowly spread across his face. “What are you…?”\n\nNala slowly leaned forward as her paws wrapped behind the prince’s head. Their faces drew closer and closer with each heartbeat until their noses were practically touching. The young lioness hesitated for a moment, teasingly hovering just above Simba’s muzzle, until finally, their mouths pressed together in a passionate kiss. \n",

Nala slowly leaned forward as her paws wrapped behind the prince’s head. Their faces drew closer and closer with each heartbeat until their noses were practically touching. The young lioness hesitated for a moment, teasingly hovering just above Simba’s muzzle, until finally, their mouths pressed together in a passionate kiss.
