“Do you remember, several years ago, when that tunnel in the mine collapsed?  And those workers died?”  She stopped, taking a deep breath.  “Well my father was one of them.”  Slowly she pulled her knees up to her chest and started hiding her face.  “For a few years after that, mom tried to raise me and work, but….”  She stopped again, shivering and clearly fighting back tears.  “One morning….one morning she didn’t wake up…..no matter how much I shook her, called to her, begged her…...and then I panicked and ran.”

“I see, and you’ve been living on the streets since and fending for yourself...’ the older polecat male stated flatly. “I’m sorry for what I’m about to ask Catherine, but with you and my son having already engaged in sex I must. How many males have you been with since then and are you certain that you are not infected with an STD or STI?”

 “Only…..four or five.”  She said keeping her face hidden.  “Only cause I needed to get some money for food and cloths.”  

“And the rest of my question?” the older male said a bit more sternly.

“I had protection….or at least the one time they didn’t they said they were clean and pulled out, and everything.”  She said, now scared to show her face.

“Please look me in the eyes when you answer me Catherine,” Mr. Bradley said in a softer tone. “But I think that it’s a bit late to stop you two, and if you are so is he now, so I won’t impose a moratorium on your activities. However,” he continued sounding a bit more concerned than upset, “I do think we will need to make a doctors appointment for both of you to be checked just to be on the safe side.” Rubbing his chin with one hand as he looked up to the ceiling he continued to speak, “now what do we do about the more long term arrangements for you two. We may have a few options but I want to know what the two of you want as well.”

 “But….If I go to the doctors, then they will find me in the records, and then the people will come and take me away.”  Cat said looking the older polecat in the eyes now.  “I don’t want to get taken away.  A friend of mine told me about it.”  She said, sounding more panicked.

“I suppose I can see your concern young lady,” Steve said with an odd little grin on his face. “I take it then my son failed to tell you what I do for a living, as he tends to do often.” Turning to his son his grin widened a bit more, “are you really that afraid, or that ashamed to tell people that I work for child protective services Tommy?” Turning back to look the caracal girl in the eyes he said, “I could get in a lot of trouble for what I am considering doing here Catherine. But if I have a good enough reason I will break nearly every rule that I usually have to abide by to insure your safety, your well being, and your best interest are properly addressed. There are ways to insure that you can stay right here, in this house, and if it is what you both want right where you are at this very moment.”

“I will…...just so long as I get to stay here.”  She said looking him in the eyes.  “Otherwise…...I will run…..I will make it to the next town…...I will not end up in one of the orphanage things.”  She said, her voice stern.

“That my dear Catherine, I can assure you will be the case. There is one thing though that you and Tommy will have to keep to yourselves. You living here will have to appear as if you are our foster daughter, so the fact that you two are… involved with each other, needs to be kept a little quiet. The fact that your boyfriend and girlfriend would essentially be okay, but you can’t tell everyone that you’re sleeping together, or that you're having sex at this young of an age.” Looking over to his son he added, “I know that no matter how hard you two try some people are going to already know, or soon find out the truth of the matter. What you both will need to do is to make sure those people are trustworthy and will keep your little secret.”

“Ye….yes sir.”  The caracal said nodding.  “My lips will be sealed.”  She said turning from the adult to look at her boyfriend.  “Thank you both.”  She said before holding her arms out for a hug.

Reaching over and pulling his girlfriend into his arms and hugging her tightly Tommy look over her shoulder at his father. “I will dad, you can count on it, and… thanks for being such a great dad. I guess I was wrong about what I thought about all the people that work where you do.”

“Sadly you’re not completely wrong to feel that way,” the older polecat responded. “Some of my co workers are vile, reprehensible pieces of shit that operate on their own agenda and do things that make what I am about to do look like the actions of saint. Now, I think we can put off figuring out what we will do about your mother until morning at the earliest. That and I will have a lot to do to get the ball rolling on this. For now though, I think you have your hands full with a young lady that is in dire need of comforting and I’m in the way of that. So goodnight to the both of you, and Catherine,” Mr. Bradley said as he rose from the bed. “Sleep well if you can, though I think it may be one of the better nights sleep you’ve had in a while.” Turning and walking to the door he paused before opening it. “Oh, and try not to wear each other out, you’ll have plenty of time for that now.” The older polecat left the room, turning out the lights and closing the door quietly behind himself leaving the two teens alone again.

“Your…...your dad is…..awesome.”  She said looking over to her boyfriend.  “and so are you.”  She said wrapping her arms around him.  “We just met the other day and I owe you so much.”

Grinning at the caracal girl mischievously Tommy replied, “yes, yes you do. I can think of a bunch of ways you can make it up to me, and thanks to my dad I think we’ll have more than enough time for every one of them.”
