"writing": "Chapter 3\n\nAlister\n\nAlister groaned, his paws aching from the long trek from Hearthglen City to Stormwatch Bay. The city of champions, or so he?s been told. Ever since he was a kit, he'd dreamt of seeing it, the place where his parents had become legends. He wasn't much to look at - just a simple Minccino, though he had been born ``shiny'' colored. Crimson red fur and small black horns, thanks to his Absol father. He couldn't help but wish he'd been born an Absol like his dad, but he hadn?t gotten to ``roll'' that option at birth. Glancing back, he spotted his partners, Basil and Shawn, lagging behind, moving at a snail's pace. ``Come on, you guys, we're almost there.'' Alister's tail wagged excitedly as he peered over the hill. The city walls, gleaming in the afternoon sun, weren't far now. ``I can see the city!'' \n\n\"Alister, slow down, my paws are so sore.\" Basil said as she stopped to sit on a large rock. In the distance, they could see the gates and city of Stormwatch. Alister?s eyes marveled at the sight of the city before him. The legendary Colosseum of Storms, rose above the ground, a beacon of strength and glory. The arena was regionally known for being the place where Pokemon like Alister?s father, Bangam Blacktail, had made his mark. Alister remembered being told stories by his parents about their careers in the arena; the roar of the crowd, the clash of skill against skill, the thrill of victory. He dreamed of one day coming here and doing the same, of etching his name in the annals of the Colosseum, beside his father?s. \n\n\"Come on hurry up!\" Alister cried out, his tail swishing excitedly as he ran back to meet with Basil. \"I?m so ready for this. I?m ready for them to chant my name. For me to be the thing for folklore.\" He was practically vibrating with anticipation. \n\n\"Least someone is excited, I just want to get in the room and pass out.\" Basil sighs as she works to keep up. \"Least slow down enough for Shawn to catch up. You know he doesn?t move very fast.\" \n\n\"Builds character!\" Alister?s eyes shone with excitement, reflecting the midday sun. \"This is it, Basil! This is where I make my mark! I?m going to be like dad? You know he was called the Shadow Dancer back in the day. Oh I wonder what kind of nickname they?ll give me? Maybe something like Red Devil or Alister the Badass. I bet they?ll be chanting my name after I win my first match!\"\n\nBasil chuckled, shaking her head at her mate's enthusiasm. \"Pretty sure not, I?ve heard the crowd here is hard to win over.\" she said, her tone light and teasing. \"My paws are already aching, and we haven?t even reached the city gates yet. You're going to need more than a cool nickname to make it in Stormwatch Bay, Alister. You're going to need to show them what you're made of.\"\n\nAs if on cue, a figure came stumbling into view from just over the rise behind them. Shawn Cheater, Alister?s oldest friend and constant rival, tripped over thin air, sprawling face-first onto the dusty path. He pushed himself up, grumbling under his breath as he adjusted the pink collar around his neck. The collar, a recent gift from Basil, stood out against Shawn's pale green skin. \n\nUnlike most Bulbasaur, Shawn?s skin wasn?t a vibrant green. Instead, he was oddly pale, almost white, making the bulb on his back, a pale green itself, seem even more prominent. He wore the pink collar after they brought him into their family, the couple becoming a trio. It was odd at first, being mates with his best friend and longest rival. But Alister was glad that they made the commitment to one another. It took some getting used to, of course. There were awkward moments, and sometimes, Alister still felt a pang of jealousy when he saw Shawn and Basil cuddling. But in the end, he knew he was lucky. He had two Pokemon who loved him unconditionally, and that was all that mattered. \n\nAlister sits down next to Basil, letting out a sigh of relief. He'd been on his feet for hours, and his legs were starting to ache. Shawn, who was always complaining about the lack of creature comforts, plopped down next to him, his large frame almost engulfing Alister. Alister patted his friend's head, admiring his boyfriend. Shawn wasn't used to long walks like this, and they had been at it for about the last week, hiking over large hills and through dense forests to reach Stormwatch. \n\n``I really don't know why we didn't go with Chip and the others,'' Shawn asked, his voice laced with a hint of exhaustion. \n\n``They went to Azura Bay,'' Basil said, pointing down a road leading away from them. ``They're about two days away if we really want to go see them. Azura and Stormwatch are sister cities.''\n\nBasil's words triggered a wave of memories, flashing before Alister's eyes. He remembered the last time he'd seen Chip and the others, back at Blacktail Academy. They had been a tight-knit group, always pushing each other to be better, to achieve more. But Alister had always felt a need to prove himself, to stand out from the crowd. He needed to forge his own path, create his own legacy. And that's what brought them here, to Stormwatch Bay, the city of champions.\n\n\"Nah, we?ve been under their noses for way too long,\" Alister said, nuzzling Shawn affectionately. His red fur brushed against Shawn?s white skin, a stark contrast that always made Alister smile. \"It?s time we have our own adventure. We?ll catch up with Chip and the others after their little festival. We?ve got business to handle, taking over this town.\" The young Minccino?s eyes sparkled with excitement, his small black horns glinting in the fading light.\n\n\"I guess,\" Shawn groaned, his pale green bulb drooping slightly. \"I just want to go to sleep. Can?t we just set up camp and sleep here?\" The Bulbasaur?s eyes were heavy with exhaustion, and Alister felt a twinge of guilt for pushing so hard.\n\n\"We?re building up momentum. Remember what they say, a poke in motion stays in motion and a poke who stays pu - \" Alister began, his voice filled with enthusiasm, but was abruptly cut off by Shawn.\n\n\"Ya well I want to stay put, Ali.\" Shawn nuzzled his face into Alister?s stomach, the warmth of his breath tickling Alister?s fur. \"Just let me sleep...\" The Bulbasaur?s voice was muffled against Alister?s body, and the Minccino felt his resolve wavering in the face of his friend?s obvious fatigue. \n\nAlister knew Shawn was just tired, but he couldn't help but feel a pang of guilt. He knew Shawn was always the one who had to sacrifice for him, who had to put up with his ambition and his need to prove himself. \n\n``Shawn, we're almost there,'' Alister said, forcing a smile. ``Just a bit more, buddy. I mean, we can see the city gates from here.'' As Alister said that, they saw some merchants passing them, heading towards the city.\n\n\"Let?s see,\" Basil said, pulling out a well-worn travel guide from her pack. \"It says here that Stormwatch Bay is a bustling city known for its vibrant culture and, of course, the Colosseum of Storms.\" \n\nBasil opened the guide to a page with a beautifully drawn sketch of the city. Alister could see the grand Colosseum of Storms towering over the city, its walls made of gray stone and topped with a series of pointed arches. It was a structure that seemed to hold the city in its grip, a symbol of its history and the passion for combat that permeated its very being.\n\n\"The Colosseum is the city?s heart,\" Basil continued, tracing the image with her paw. \"It?s where champions are made and legends are born. We?ll definitely have to see a few battles while we?re here. It?s supposed to have some of the best fights in the region.\" Basil tapped the image, drawing Alister?s attention to a row of statues in the picture, one of which was unmistakably an Absol. \"I think they have a statue of your father out front along with the other champions. That?s going to be a must-see.\"\n\nAlister?s heart raced at the mention of his father?s statue. He felt a mix of pride and apprehension, knowing that Bangam Blacktail?s legacy loomed large over the city. The young Minccino couldn?t help but wonder how he would measure up in a place where his father?s achievements were literally set in stone. He nodded silently, his eyes fixed on the Absol statue in the image, imagining what it would be like to stand before it in person. The weight of expectation settled heavily on his shoulders, but he was determined to face it head-on, just as his father would have done. \n\n\"But before we get caught up in the arena,\" Basil said, flipping to a different page in the guide. \"Let?s get settled in at the Thunderhead Inn. It?s known for its cozy atmosphere and its delicious food. They say their grilled salmon is incredible!\"\n\nAlister's stomach rumbled. He had been eating rations for days, and the thought of a good meal made him feel more excited than the Colosseum itself. \n\n\"And,\" Basil added, \"They have rooms with balconies overlooking the Colosseum. It?ll be the perfect spot to watch the city come alive at night. The guide says they have the best view in the city.\"\n\nAlister could already imagine it. He saw himself sitting on the balcony, a warm breeze carrying the scent of the sea and the echoes of the crowd's roars from the Colosseum. He would be surrounded by his mates, and he would finally be where he belonged, in the heart of Stormwatch Bay.\n\n\"Mon I so want a good meal that is not stale bread.\" Shawn groans.\n\n\"Hey I turned that bread into something that we could all eat.\" Basil says as she closes her book. \"Remember you have a world class chef here.\" Basil smiles. \"Well world class chef in the making.\"\n\n\"True that.\" Alister wanted to get up but his paws wouldn?t let him. \n\n\"Come on you two, I want to at least get to the inn before nightfall.\" Alister said. He slowly got to his paws, his legs aching from the long journey. Basil was already packing up her things, her movements quick and efficient as always. She was eager to get to the inn and start planning their adventures in Stormwatch Bay. Alister knew she was particularly excited about trying the local cuisine. \n\n\"Fine, fine.\" Shawn grumbled, struggling to his feet. \"But I?m getting the biggest plate of grilled salmon they have.\"\n\nAs they started walking towards that distant city gates, Alister noticed a commotion up ahead. A small crowd had gathered just outside the city walls, their excited shouts and cheers carrying on the wind. Curious, Alister quickened his pace, Basil and Shawn struggling to keep up.\n\n``What's going on?'' Basil asked, her voice full of curiosity.\n\n``Probably just some merchants hawking their wares,'' Shawn said, but Alister could tell he was curious too.\n\nAs they got closer, the crowd parted slightly, giving them a glimpse of what was happening. Two Pokemon were locked in battle: a Charmander, its tail flame blazing fiercely, and a Riolu, its blue fur matted with sweat. The Charmander was clearly the aggressor, its movements fluid and powerful as it launched a barrage of attacks at the Riolu.\n\n``Inferno! Inferno! Inferno!'' the crowd chanted, their voices echoing through the air. \n\nAlister had never seen a Pokemon fight with such intensity, such raw power. The Charmander, every movement a blur, was toying with the Riolu. It dodged every attack with ease, countering with blows that sent the Riolu crashing to the ground. But it was the Charmander?s eyes that truly captivated Alister. They burned with a fierce intensity, a hunger for victory that sent shivers down his spine. The Charmander let out a mocking laugh, its tail flame flickering with amusement. \n\n\"Looks like the Riolu is outmatched.\" Shawn said, his eyes glued to the fight.\n\n\"That Charmander, he?s good.\" Basil said, her voice low. \"He moves like lightning.\"\n\nAlister couldn't take his eyes off the Charmander. The way it moved, the way it fought, it was mesmerizing. A wave of excitement, of anticipation, surged through him.\n\nHis parents had told him stories about the Pokemon in Stormwatch, about how they were the best fighters in the region, always testing one another?s strength. Alister felt his blood rushing as he watched the Charmander and Riolu fight. \n\nThe Charmander, sensing the Riolu's weakness, dove in, its claws extended. It caught the Riolu off guard, lifting it off its feet before slamming it onto its back. The Riolu struggled to regain its footing, but the Charmander was relentless. It swung its tail like a whip, catching the Riolu squarely on the side and sending it flying back into a nearby tree. The Riolu slumped to the ground, unmoving. \n\nThe crowd erupted, their cheers deafening. The Charmander, standing tall over its fallen opponent, threw its head back and let out a triumphant roar. \"Ignatius! Ignatius!\" he yelled, breathing a plume of fire into the air.\n\n``They don't hold back here, do they?'' Shawn said, his voice hushed with awe.\n\n``They fight with a different kind of fire in their eyes,'' Basil agreed, her gaze fixed on the victorious Charmander. \"This case literally.\" \n\nAlister felt a surge of excitement, a thrill he hadn't experienced before. These Pokemon, they weren't just battling for sport, they were fighting for something more, something primal, something... exhilarating. His heart pounded in his chest, every beat pushing him closer to the heart of the action.\n\n\"Who else wants some, who wants a piece of Ignatius the Inferno!\" The Charmander cried out to the crowd, his voice echoing through the arena. No one moved, most likely out of fear. The spectators remained frozen where they stood, their eyes wide with a mixture of awe and trepidation. Alister felt a surge of adrenaline coursing through his body, his paws itching to step forward and accept the challenge. He could feel his heart pounding in his chest, urging him to prove himself against this formidable opponent. But just as he was about to leap into the fray, he felt a vine wrap around his waist, holding him back. \"I?ll take on anybody!\" Ignatius roared, his tail flame blazing brighter with each word. \"Line them up and I?ll burn them down.\" The Charmander?s eyes scanned the crowd, searching for any sign of a worthy challenger, while Alister struggled against the restraint, torn between his desire to fight and the wisdom of staying put. \n\n\"Don?t even think about it.\" Shawn told him.\n\n\"Huh why not?\" Alister asked as he tried to break free but Shawn?s grip tightened. \n\n\"This is not a game Alister.\" Basil tells him. \"These Pokemon, that Charmander are not fighting solely for fun. This is a blood sport to them.\" \n\n\"Blood sport?\" \n\n\"Yes.\" Basil grabs him and yanks the Minccino backwards. \"Street fighting is big here. Unlike the arena which has rules to protect Pokemon. Street fighting doesn?t.\" She points to the Riolu who was barely moving. A large indent was in the bark of the tree. \"Want to end up like him?\" \n\nAlister had to think about that. He wasn?t in the best shape to fight and the last thing he needed was to get hurt before even getting into the arena. \"I?m all for letting you spar at the arena since thats why you wanted to come so badly but I?m not carrying your lifeless body back home. I told your mother I?ll make sure you got home in one piece. Plus you promised her you wouldn?t get badly hurt.\" \n\n\"Fine...\" Alister groans. He looks at the charmander again, his desire to fight the strong Pokemon was tugging at him. But Basil was right. As they start to walk away they hear a cry from behind.\n\n\"Hold on, where do you think you?re going pipsqueak?\" a voice boomed from behind them.\n\nAlister stopped, his fur bristling. He knew that voice. It belonged to the Charmander, the one the crowd called \"Inferno.\" Alister turned slowly, his eyes meeting the Charmander?s intense gaze. The Charmander was pushing his way through the dispersing crowd, a few smaller Pokemon scattering out of his way with yelps of surprise. \n\nThe Charmander stopped in front of them, his tail flame blazing. He was taller than Alister expected, his scarred eye giving him a menacing look. He glanced at each of them, his gaze lingering on Alister for a moment.\n\n\"You three,\" the Charmander said, his voice rough. \"Where you from? You smell like outsiders.\"\n\nAlister tried to sound nonchalant as he replied, \"We?re just passing through.\" But his heart was pounding in his chest, threatening to betray his calm facade. He could feel the heat radiating off the Charmander, an intense warmth that seemed to envelope him, and he knew instinctively that this was no ordinary Pokemon. As Alister?s gaze met the Charmander?s fierce eyes, he noticed for the first time a prominent scar running over the fire-type?s right eye. His eye was nearly closed, a testament to old battles and hard-won victories. It made the Charmander look even more intimidating, if that were possible. Alister felt a shiver run down his spine, despite the warmth in the air, as he realized they might be in for more trouble than he?d initially thought.\n\nThe Charmander snorted, a puff of smoke escaping his nostrils. \"Passing through, huh? To where? You reek of dirt and grass. There's no hint of the ocean on you.\" He leaned closer to Alister, his eyes narrowed. \"Let me give you some advice, kid. If you?re here to fight, stay out of the arena.\"\n\n\"What makes you say we?re here to fight?\" Basil asked, stepping forward. Her voice was calm, but Alister could sense the underlying steel.\n\nThe Charmander just grinned, his sharp teeth glinting in the fading light. \"This is Stormwatch, sweetheart. Everyone?s here to fight. But the arena...\" he spat on the ground, \"That?s no place for weaklings.\"\n\nAlister felt his fur stand on end. \"Weakling?\" he snapped. \"You think you?re so tough?\"\n\nShawn tugged on Alister?s arm. \"Let it go, Ali,\" he whispered. \"He?s not worth it.\"\n\nBut Alister wasn?t listening. He stepped closer to the Charmander, his small frame trembling with anger. \"For someone who calls himself ?Inferno,? your breath sure stinks!\"\n\nLaughter erupted from the crowd, taunts and jeers echoing around them. The Charmander spun around, his tail flame blazing even brighter as he roared at them. ``Shut your damn mouths! Else I?ll give you something to laugh at!'' \n\nHe whipped back around, his single eye burning into Alister. With a swift movement, he snatched Alister by the collar, yanking him closer. ``Say that again, pipsqueak. To my face.'' \n\nAlister's breath hitched in his throat, the Charmander's hot breath washing over him. But fear was quickly replaced by a surge of defiance. ``I said, for someone who calls himself `Inferno,' you sure stink!''\n\nThe Charmander's eye widened for a moment, then a cruel grin spread across his face. \"You?ve got guts, I don?t like that.\" Before Alister could react, the Charmander slammed his head forward, catching Alister square between the eyes. The force of the blow sent him flying backward, landing hard in the dirt. He gasped, the air knocked out of him. His vision swam, stars exploding behind his eyelids. \n\nThe Charmander stalked towards him, his claws scraping against the ground. He raised his foot, aiming to stomp Alister into the dust. Alister rolled out of the way just in time, scrambling to his feet. He whipped his tail around, catching the Charmander across the jaw. \n\nThe Charmander stumbled back, shaking his head. Alister felt a surge of adrenaline, the thrill of the fight erasing his fear. He pressed his advantage, closing the distance between them. He lunged forward, aiming his horns at the Charmander's chest.\n\nThe Charmander was faster. He swatted Alister away with his tail, sending him flying back into the dirt. The Minccino skipped over the ground like a pebble before landing in a bush, the impact knocking the wind out of him. His vision swam, stars exploding behind his eyelids.\n\n\"Get up, pipsqueak!\" the Charmander roared, his voice grating against Alister?s ears. \"Fight me like you got a pair!\" The Charmander then laughed, a harsh, mocking sound that made Alister?s fur bristle. He turned his sneering gaze to Basil and Shawn. \"Or does your little bitch and butt boy over there hold them for you?\"\n\nAlister pushed himself up, his limbs shaking with the effort. He shook his head to clear the stars that swam before his eyes, but the motion only intensified the throbbing pain. A few drops of blood dripped from a cut above his eye, trickling down his face and matting his fur. He ignored the sting, focusing instead on the anger building in his chest. He glared at the Charmander, his own fire ignited by the insult to his friends.\n\n\"Big talk for someone...\" Alister began, his voice wavering as he struggled to stay upright. His head was pounding, and blood ran over his eye, forcing him to close it. The salty, metallic stink made him shudder, but he pressed on. \"Hits someone with a cheap shot. Maybe I should be asking where your balls are, foul breath.\"\n\n\"You?re really asking for it!\" The Charmander roared, flames dancing around his mouth like angry fireflies. The heat from his breath washed over Alister, making him wince. \"I?m going to burn you for that insult. No one talks about my breath.\"\n\nAlister managed a weak smirk, despite the pain coursing through his body. He couldn?t back down now, not with Basil and Shawn watching. \"There?s a first time for everything...\" he retorted, bracing himself for the Charmander?s next move.\n\nBefore he could charge back in, Basil and Shawn were suddenly in front of him, their bodies shielding him from the Charmander. Basil?s blue fur bristled, her eyes narrowed into slits, and Shawn?s bulb pulsed with a low, threatening hum.\n\nIgnatius threw his head back and laughed, a harsh, grating sound. ``Well, well, looks like the little runt's got his momma bear and his butt plug to protect him! What are you gonna do? Bake me to death with cookies?'' He waved a dismissive paw at Alister. ``Get outta here, pipsqueak. Consider this a warning, stay out the arena if you know whats good for you.''\n\nAlister felt his face burn, shame flooding him like a tidal wave. Without a word, he turned and walked away, his paws heavy on the dirt road. He could feel Basil and Shawn's presence behind him, their silence somehow louder than any scolding they could offer. He didn?t need their words; their disappointment was a tangible weight on his heart. The Charmander?s laughter echoed behind them, a mocking punctuation to his humiliation. \n\n\"Hey loser!\" The Charmander calls out to them. Alister and the others turn didn?t waste their time wanting to turn around to him. \"Get my name memorized in that waste of space you call a head. Ignatius the INFERNO.\"\n\nAlister?s head throbbed slightly, but the cut above his eye was superficial. It was his pride that bled, staining his fur with shame. He'd charged in, blinded by anger and a need to prove himself, only to be swatted down like a bothersome bug. He had been a fool.\n\nThe imposing city gates towered before them, a grand archway promising adventure and challenge beyond Alister?s wildest dreams. But the young Minccino felt smaller than ever, utterly insignificant in the shadow of such grandeur. He longed to vanish into thin air, to find a deep, dark hole where he could crawl in and nurse his wounded pride in solitude. With each step closer to Stormwatch Bay, doubt gnawed at him. Perhaps he truly didn?t belong in this legendary place? His father, the great Bangam Blacktail, had grown up in these very streets, fought tooth and claw in the arena not just for glory, but for his very survival. In stark contrast, Alister realized he hadn?t known a single day of true hardship in his sheltered life, and it showed in every uncertain movement, every anxious glance. The weight of his father?s legacy pressed down on him, making each step towards the city feel like wading through quicksand. \n\nSuddenly, Shawn's vines wrapped around him again, halting his progress. Alister hung his head, bracing for the lecture he knew he deserved. Basil stepped in front of him, concern etched on her face. He squeezed his eyes shut, waiting for the inevitable reprimand.\n\n``Hold still,'' Basil murmured, dabbing at his cut with a cool, damp cloth. He flinched involuntarily. \n\n``Sorry,'' Basil whispered, her voice soft. \n\nHe opened his eyes to find her gaze steady, unwavering. There was no anger in her eyes, only concern and a steely glint that he'd rarely seen before. \n\n``We'll show that prick who's boss,'' she stated, her voice low and dangerous. ``Sooner or later.''\n\nAlister stared at her, surprised. This wasn't the reaction he'd expected. He glanced at Shawn, who simply nodded, a grim smile playing on his lips. \n\n``You'll wipe the floor with him,'' Shawn affirmed. ``Just... maybe not today.''\n\nBasil shook her head, her expression softening. ``Ali, you're a fighter. Always have been. And a fighter has to fight. But,'' she added, her voice firm, ``you have to be smart about it.''\n\nAlister gasped, his heart swelling with warmth. ``But... I charged in like an idiot. I made a fool of myself.''\n\nBasil and Shawn exchanged a knowing look, a silent conversation passing between them. Their lips twitched, suppressing chuckles. \n\n``Why are you laughing?'' Alister's ears drooped. ``This isn't funny.''\n\n``Because we expected that from your Ali,'' Shawn said, his voice laced with amusement. ``But we?re a team, partners though it all. We help each other up when we?re down. You guys taught me that.\" Shawn puts a paw on his pink collar. \"We wear these collars not just for show, silly.''\n\nBasil leaned down, placing a gentle kiss on Alister's head. ``He?s right\" Basil touches her red collar as it sat comfortably around her neck. Alister remembered when Basil made them long ago when she ironically proposed to him. He was such a hard head back then, barely realizing that the greatest treasure of his life had been sitting under his nose. \"We?re strongest when we?re together. Its going to take more than some bad breath lizard to break our bond.\" Her smile was soft, reassuring.\n\nAlister felt tears building in his eyes and he found himself wiping his face. He couldn?t believe what he was hearing right now. Alister felt a surge of gratitude, his previous shame melting away. He threw his arms around both of them, holding them close. ``Thanks, guys. I... I needed that.''\n\nAs they huddled together, a gruff cough broke the moment. A towering Sandslash, clad in the city guard's armor, stood behind them. His expression was stern, but there was a hint of amusement in his eyes.\n\n``You're free to enter, pups,'' the Sandslash rumbled. ``But try not to start any more brawls before you even cross the threshold. We have enough of those inside the city walls already.''\n\nAlister, Basil, and Shawn chuckled, a newfound lightness in their hearts. They nodded their thanks to the guard and stepped through the towering city gates, leaving the setting sun and the memory of their encounter with that loud mouth Charmander behind them.\n\nWhat was his name again...who cares.\n\nAs they walked the dusty streets, Alister felt his excitement returning. He glanced around, his senses heightened. The air buzzed with a different kind of energy, a chaotic symphony of shouts, laughter, and the clang of training weapons. \n\nIf everyone here was like that foul breath lizard, then he truly had his work cut out for him.\n\n",

The city of champions, or so he?s been told. Ever since he was a kit, he&#039;d dreamt of seeing it, the place where his parents had become legends. He wasn&#039;t much to look at - just a simple Minccino, though he had been born ``shiny&#039;&#039; colored. Crimson red fur and small black horns, thanks to his Absol father. He couldn&#039;t help but wish he&#039;d been born an Absol like his dad, but he hadn?t gotten to ``roll&#039;&#039; that option at birth. Glancing back, he spotted his partners, Basil and Shawn, lagging behind, moving at a snail&#039;s pace. ``Come on, you guys, we&#039;re almost there.&#039;&#039; Alister&#039;s tail wagged excitedly as he peered over the hill. The city walls, gleaming in the afternoon sun, weren&#039;t far now. ``I can see the city!&#039;&#039; <br /><br />&quot;Alister, slow down, my paws are so sore.&quot; Basil said as she stopped to sit on a large rock. <br /><br />&quot;Come on hurry up!&quot; Alister cried out, his tail swishing excitedly as he ran back to meet with Basil. &quot;I?m so ready for this. I?m ready for them to chant my name. For me to be the thing for folklore.&quot; He was practically vibrating with anticipation. <br /><br />&quot;Least someone is excited, I just want to get in the room and pass out.&quot; Basil sighs as she works to keep up. &quot;Least slow down enough for Shawn to catch up. You know he doesn?t move very fast.&quot; <br /><br />&quot;Builds character!&quot; Alister?s eyes shone with excitement, reflecting the midday sun. &quot; This is it, Basil! This is where I make my mark! I?m going to be like dad? You know he was called the Shadow Dancer back in the day. Oh I wonder what kind of nickname they?ll give me? Maybe something like Red Devil or Alister the Badass. I bet they?ll be chanting my name after I win my first match!&quot;<br /><br />Basil chuckled, shaking her head at her mate&#039;s enthusiasm. &quot;Pretty sure not, I?ve heard the crowd here is hard to win over.&quot; she said, her tone light and teasing. &quot; My paws are already aching, and we haven?t even reached the city gates yet. You&#039;re going to need more than a cool nickname to make it in Stormwatch Bay, Alister. You&#039;re going to need to show them what you&#039;re made of.&quot;<br /><br />As if on cue, a figure came stumbling into view from just over the rise behind them. Shawn Cheater, Alister?s oldest friend and constant rival, tripped over thin air, sprawling face-first onto the dusty path. He pushed himself up, grumbling under his breath as he adjusted the pink collar around his neck. The collar, a recent gift from Basil, stood out against Shawn&#039;s pale green skin. <br /><br />Unlike most Bulbasaur, Shawn?s skin wasn?t a vibrant green. <br /><br />Alister sits down next to Basil, letting out a sigh of relief. He&#039;d been on his feet for hours, and his legs were starting to ache. Shawn, who was always complaining about the lack of creature comforts, plopped down next to him, his large frame almost engulfing Alister. Alister patted his friend&#039;s head, admiring his boyfriend. Shawn wasn&#039;t used to long walks like this, and they had been at it for about the last week, hiking over large hills and through dense forests to reach Stormwatch. <br /><br />``I really don&#039;t know why we didn&#039;t go with Chip and the others,&#039;&#039; Shawn asked, his voice laced with a hint of exhaustion. <br /><br />``They went to Azura Bay,&#039;&#039; Basil said, pointing down a road leading away from them. ``They&#039;re about two days away if we really want to go see them. Azura and Stormwatch are sister cities.&#039;&#039;<br /><br />Basil&#039;s words triggered a wave of memories, flashing before Alister&#039;s eyes. He remembered the last time he&#039;d seen Chip and the others, back at Blacktail Academy. They had been a tight-knit group, always pushing each other to be better, to achieve more. But Alister had always felt a need to prove himself, to stand out from the crowd. He needed to forge his own path, create his own legacy. And that&#039;s what brought them here, to Stormwatch Bay, the city of champions.<br /><br />&quot;Nah, we?ve been under their noses for way too long,&quot; Alister said, nuzzling Shawn affectionately. His red fur brushed against Shawn?s white skin, a stark contrast that always made Alister smile. &quot; It?s time we have our own adventure. We?ll catch up with Chip and the others after their little festival. We?ve got business to handle, taking over this town.&quot; The young Minccino?s eyes sparkled with excitement, his small black horns glinting in the fading light.<br /><br />&quot;I guess,&quot; Shawn groaned, his pale green bulb drooping slightly. &quot;I just want to go to sleep. Can?t we just set up camp and sleep here?&quot; The Bulbasaur?s eyes were heavy with exhaustion, and Alister felt a twinge of guilt for pushing so hard.<br /><br />&quot;We?re building up momentum. Remember what they say, a poke in motion stays in motion and a poke who stays pu - &quot; Alister began, his voice filled with enthusiasm, but was abruptly cut off by Shawn.<br /><br />&quot;Ya well I want to stay put, Ali.&quot; Shawn nuzzled his face into Alister?s stomach, the warmth of his breath tickling Alister?s fur. &quot;Just let me sleep...&quot; The Bulbasaur?s voice was muffled against Alister?s body, and the Minccino felt his resolve wavering in the face of his friend?s obvious fatigue. <br /><br />Alister knew Shawn was just tired, but he couldn&#039;t help but feel a pang of guilt. He knew Shawn was always the one who had to sacrifice for him, who had to put up with his ambition and his need to prove himself. <br /><br />``Shawn, we&#039;re almost there,&#039;&#039; Alister said, forcing a smile. ``Just a bit more, buddy. I mean, we can see the city gates from here.&#039;&#039; As Alister said that, they saw some merchants passing them, heading towards the city.<br /><br />&quot;Let?s see,&quot; Basil said, pulling out a well-worn travel guide from her pack. &quot; It says here that Stormwatch Bay is a bustling city known for its vibrant culture and, of course, the Colosseum of Storms.&quot; <br /><br />Basil opened the guide to a page with a beautifully drawn sketch of the city. Alister could see the grand Colosseum of Storms towering over the city, its walls made of gray stone and topped with a series of pointed arches. It was a structure that seemed to hold the city in its grip, a symbol of its history and the passion for combat that permeated its very being.<br /><br />&quot;The Colosseum is the city?s heart,&quot; Basil continued, tracing the image with her paw. &quot; It?s where champions are made and legends are born. We?ll definitely have to see a few battles while we?re here. It?s supposed to have some of the best fights in the region.&quot; Basil tapped the image, drawing Alister?s attention to a row of statues in the picture, one of which was unmistakably an Absol. &quot;I think they have a statue of your father out front along with the other champions. That?s going to be a must-see.&quot;<br /><br />Alister?s heart raced at the mention of his father?s statue. <br /><br />&quot;But before we get caught up in the arena,&quot; Basil said, flipping to a different page in the guide. &quot;Let?s get settled in at the Thunderhead Inn. It?s known for its cozy atmosphere and its delicious food. They say their grilled salmon is incredible!&quot;<br /><br />Alister&#039;s stomach rumbled. He had been eating rations for days, and the thought of a good meal made him feel more excited than the Colosseum itself. <br /><br />&quot;And,&quot; Basil added, &quot; They have rooms with balconies overlooking the Colosseum. It?ll be the perfect spot to watch the city come alive at night. The guide says they have the best view in the city.&quot;<br /><br />Alister could already imagine it. He saw himself sitting on the balcony, a warm breeze carrying the scent of the sea and the echoes of the crowd&#039;s roars from the Colosseum. He would be surrounded by his mates, and he would finally be where he belonged, in the heart of Stormwatch Bay.<br /><br />&quot;Mon I so want a good meal that is not stale bread.&quot; Shawn groans.<br /><br />&quot;Hey I turned that bread into something that we could all eat.&quot; Basil says as she closes her book. &quot;Remember you have a world class chef here.&quot; Basil smiles. &quot;Well world class chef in the making.&quot;<br /><br />&quot;True that.&quot; Alister wanted to get up but his paws wouldn?t let him. <br /><br />&quot;Come on you two, I want to at least get to the inn before nightfall.&quot; Alister said. He slowly got to his paws, his legs aching from the long journey. Basil was already packing up her things, her movements quick and efficient as always. She was eager to get to the inn and start planning their adventures in Stormwatch Bay. Alister knew she was particularly excited about trying the local cuisine. <br /><br />&quot;Fine, fine.&quot; Shawn grumbled, struggling to his feet. &quot; But I?m getting the biggest plate of grilled salmon they have.&quot;<br /><br />As they started walking towards that distant city gates, Alister noticed a commotion up ahead. A small crowd had gathered just outside the city walls, their excited shouts and cheers carrying on the wind. Curious, Alister quickened his pace, Basil and Shawn struggling to keep up.<br /><br />``What&#039;s going on?&#039;&#039; Basil asked, her voice full of curiosity.<br /><br />``Probably just some merchants hawking their wares,&#039;&#039; Shawn said, but Alister could tell he was curious too.<br /><br />As they got closer, the crowd parted slightly, giving them a glimpse of what was happening. Two Pokemon were locked in battle: a Charmander, its tail flame blazing fiercely, and a Riolu, its blue fur matted with sweat. The Charmander was clearly the aggressor, its movements fluid and powerful as it launched a barrage of attacks at the Riolu.<br /><br />``Inferno! Inferno! Inferno!&#039;&#039; the crowd chanted, their voices echoing through the air. <br /><br />Alister had never seen a Pokemon fight with such intensity, such raw power. <br /><br />&quot;Looks like the Riolu is outmatched.&quot; Shawn said, his eyes glued to the fight.<br /><br />&quot;That Charmander, he?s good.&quot; Basil said, her voice low. &quot; He moves like lightning.&quot;<br /><br />Alister couldn&#039;t take his eyes off the Charmander. The way it moved, the way it fought, it was mesmerizing. A wave of excitement, of anticipation, surged through him.<br /><br />His parents had told him stories about the Pokemon in Stormwatch, about how they were the best fighters in the region, always testing one another?s strength. Alister felt his blood rushing as he watched the Charmander and Riolu fight. <br /><br />The Charmander, sensing the Riolu&#039;s weakness, dove in, its claws extended. <br /><br />The crowd erupted, their cheers deafening. The Charmander, standing tall over its fallen opponent, threw its head back and let out a triumphant roar. &quot;Ignatius! Ignatius!&quot; he yelled, breathing a plume of fire into the air.<br /><br />``They don&#039;t hold back here, do they?&#039;&#039; Shawn said, his voice hushed with awe.<br /><br />``They fight with a different kind of fire in their eyes,&#039;&#039; Basil agreed, her gaze fixed on the victorious Charmander. &quot; This case literally.&quot; <br /><br />Alister felt a surge of excitement, a thrill he hadn&#039;t experienced before. These Pokemon, they weren&#039;t just battling for sport, they were fighting for something more, something primal, something... exhilarating. His heart pounded in his chest, every beat pushing him closer to the heart of the action.<br /><br />&quot;Who else wants some, who wants a piece of Ignatius the Inferno!&quot; The Charmander cried out to the crowd, his voice echoing through the arena. &quot;I?ll take on anybody!&quot; Ignatius roared, his tail flame blazing brighter with each word. &quot;Line them up and I?ll burn them down.&quot; The Charmander?s eyes scanned the crowd, searching for any sign of a worthy challenger, while Alister struggled against the restraint, torn between his desire to fight and the wisdom of staying put. <br /><br />&quot;Don?t even think about it.&quot; Shawn told him.<br /><br />&quot;Huh why not?&quot; Alister asked as he tried to break free but Shawn?s grip tightened. <br /><br />&quot;This is not a game Alister.&quot; Basil tells him. &quot; These Pokemon, that Charmander are not fighting solely for fun. This is a blood sport to them.&quot; <br /><br />&quot;Blood sport?&quot; <br /><br />&quot;Yes.&quot; Basil grabs him and yanks the Minccino backwards. &quot;Street fighting is big here. Unlike the arena which has rules to protect Pokemon. Street fighting doesn?t.&quot; She points to the Riolu who was barely moving. A large indent was in the bark of the tree. &quot;Want to end up like him?&quot; <br /><br />Alister had to think about that. He wasn?t in the best shape to fight and the last thing he needed was to get hurt before even getting into the arena. &quot;I?m all for letting you spar at the arena since thats why you wanted to come so badly but I?m not carrying your lifeless body back home. I told your mother I?ll make sure you got home in one piece. Plus you promised her you wouldn?t get badly hurt.&quot; <br /><br />&quot;Fine...&quot; Alister groans. He looks at the charmander again, his desire to fight the strong Pokemon was tugging at him. But Basil was right. As they start to walk away they hear a cry from behind.<br /><br />&quot;Hold on, where do you think you?re going pipsqueak?&quot; a voice boomed from behind them.<br /><br />Alister stopped, his fur bristling. He knew that voice. It belonged to the Charmander, the one the crowd called &quot;Inferno.&quot; Alister turned slowly, his eyes meeting the Charmander?s intense gaze. The Charmander was pushing his way through the dispersing crowd, a few smaller Pokemon scattering out of his way with yelps of surprise. <br /><br />The Charmander stopped in front of them, his tail flame blazing. He was taller than Alister expected, his scarred eye giving him a menacing look. He glanced at each of them, his gaze lingering on Alister for a moment.<br /><br />&quot;You three,&quot; the Charmander said, his voice rough. &quot;Where you from? He could feel the heat radiating off the Charmander, an intense warmth that seemed to envelope him, and he knew instinctively that this was no ordinary Pokemon. As Alister?s gaze met the Charmander?s fierce eyes, he noticed for the first time a prominent scar running over the fire-type?s right eye. His eye was nearly closed, a testament to old battles and hard-won victories. It made the Charmander look even more intimidating, if that were possible. Alister felt a shiver run down his spine, despite the warmth in the air, as he realized they might be in for more trouble than he?d initially thought.<br /><br />The Charmander snorted, a puff of smoke escaping his nostrils. &quot;Passing through, huh? To where? You reek of dirt and grass. There&#039;s no hint of the ocean on you.&quot; He leaned closer to Alister, his eyes narrowed. &quot;Let me give you some advice, kid. If you?re here to fight, stay out of the arena.&quot;<br /><br />&quot;What makes you say we?re here to fight?&quot; Basil asked, stepping forward. Her voice was calm, but Alister could sense the underlying steel.<br /><br />The Charmander just grinned, his sharp teeth glinting in the fading light. &quot; This is Stormwatch, sweetheart. Everyone?s here to fight. But the arena...&quot; he spat on the ground, &quot; That?s no place for weaklings.&quot;<br /><br />Alister felt his fur stand on end. &quot;Weakling?&quot; he snapped. &quot; You think you?re so tough?&quot;<br /><br />Shawn tugged on Alister?s arm. &quot;Let it go, Ali,&quot; he whispered. &quot; He?s not worth it.&quot;<br /><br />But Alister wasn?t listening. He stepped closer to the Charmander, his small frame trembling with anger. &quot; For someone who calls himself ?Inferno,? your breath sure stinks!&quot;<br /><br />Laughter erupted from the crowd, taunts and jeers echoing around them. The Charmander spun around, his tail flame blazing even brighter as he roared at them. ``Shut your damn mouths! Else I?ll give you something to laugh at!&#039;&#039; <br /><br />He whipped back around, his single eye burning into Alister. With a swift movement, he snatched Alister by the collar, yanking him closer. ``Say that again, pipsqueak. To my face.&#039;&#039; <br /><br />Alister&#039;s breath hitched in his throat, the Charmander&#039;s hot breath washing over him. But fear was quickly replaced by a surge of defiance. ``I said, for someone who calls himself `Inferno,&#039; you sure stink!&#039;&#039;<br /><br />The Charmander&#039;s eye widened for a moment, then a cruel grin spread across his face. &quot; You?ve got guts, I don?t like that.&quot; Before Alister could react, the Charmander slammed his head forward, catching Alister square between the eyes. The force of the blow sent him flying backward, landing hard in the dirt. He gasped, the air knocked out of him. His vision swam, stars exploding behind his eyelids. <br /><br />The Charmander stalked towards him, his claws scraping against the ground. He raised his foot, aiming to stomp Alister into the dust. Alister rolled out of the way just in time, scrambling to his feet. He whipped his tail around, catching the Charmander across the jaw. <br /><br />The Charmander stumbled back, shaking his head. Alister felt a surge of adrenaline, the thrill of the fight erasing his fear. He pressed his advantage, closing the distance between them. He lunged forward, aiming his horns at the Charmander&#039;s chest.<br /><br />The Charmander was faster. He swatted Alister away with his tail, sending him flying back into the dirt. The Minccino skipped over the ground like a pebble before landing in a bush, the impact knocking the wind out of him. His vision swam, stars exploding behind his eyelids.<br /><br />&quot;Get up, pipsqueak!&quot; the Charmander roared, his voice grating against Alister?s ears. &quot;Fight me like you got a pair!&quot; The Charmander then laughed, a harsh, mocking sound that made Alister?s fur bristle. He turned his sneering gaze to Basil and Shawn. &quot;Or does your little bitch and butt boy over there hold them for you?&quot;<br /><br />Alister pushed himself up, his limbs shaking with the effort. He shook his head to clear the stars that swam before his eyes, but the motion only intensified the throbbing pain. A few drops of blood dripped from a cut above his eye, trickling down his face and matting his fur. He ignored the sting, focusing instead on the anger building in his chest. He glared at the Charmander, his own fire ignited by the insult to his friends.<br /><br />&quot;Big talk for someone...&quot; Alister began, his voice wavering as he struggled to stay upright. His head was pounding, and blood ran over his eye, forcing him to close it. The salty, metallic stink made him shudder, but he pressed on. &quot;Hits someone with a cheap shot. Maybe I should be asking where your balls are, foul breath.&quot;<br /><br />&quot;You?re really asking for it!&quot; The Charmander roared, flames dancing around his mouth like angry fireflies. The heat from his breath washed over Alister, making him wince. &quot;I?m going to burn you for that insult. No one talks about my breath.&quot;<br /><br />Alister managed a weak smirk, despite the pain coursing through his body. He couldn?t back down now, not with Basil and Shawn watching. &quot; There?s a first time for everything...&quot; he retorted, bracing himself for the Charmander?s next move.<br /><br />Before he could charge back in, Basil and Shawn were suddenly in front of him, their bodies shielding him from the Charmander. Basil?s blue fur bristled, her eyes narrowed into slits, and Shawn?s bulb pulsed with a low, threatening hum.<br /><br />Ignatius threw his head back and laughed, a harsh, grating sound. ``Well, well, looks like the little runt&#039;s got his momma bear and his butt plug to protect him! What are you gonna do? Bake me to death with cookies?&#039;&#039; He waved a dismissive paw at Alister. ``Get outta here, pipsqueak. Consider this a warning, stay out the arena if you know whats good for you.&#039;&#039;<br /><br />Alister felt his face burn, shame flooding him like a tidal wave. Without a word, he turned and walked away, his paws heavy on the dirt road. He could feel Basil and Shawn&#039;s presence behind him, their silence somehow louder than any scolding they could offer. He didn?t need their words; their disappointment was a tangible weight on his heart. The Charmander?s laughter echoed behind them, a mocking punctuation to his humiliation. <br /><br />&quot;Hey loser!&quot; The Charmander calls out to them. Alister and the others turn didn?t waste their time wanting to turn around to him. &quot;Get my name memorized in that waste of space you call a head. Ignatius the INFERNO.&quot;<br /><br />Alister?s head throbbed slightly, but the cut above his eye was superficial. It was his pride that bled, staining his fur with shame. He&#039;d charged in, blinded by anger and a need to prove himself, only to be swatted down like a bothersome bug. He had been a fool.<br /><br />The imposing city gates towered before them, a grand archway promising adventure and challenge beyond Alister?s wildest dreams. <br /><br />Suddenly, Shawn&#039;s vines wrapped around him again, halting his progress. Alister hung his head, bracing for the lecture he knew he deserved. Basil stepped in front of him, concern etched on her face. He squeezed his eyes shut, waiting for the inevitable reprimand.<br /><br />``Hold still,&#039;&#039; Basil murmured, dabbing at his cut with a cool, damp cloth. He flinched involuntarily. <br /><br />``Sorry,&#039;&#039; Basil whispered, her voice soft. <br /><br />He opened his eyes to find her gaze steady, unwavering. There was no anger in her eyes, only concern and a steely glint that he&#039;d rarely seen before. <br /><br />``We&#039;ll show that prick who&#039;s boss,&#039;&#039; she stated, her voice low and dangerous. ``Sooner or later.&#039;&#039;<br /><br />Alister stared at her, surprised. This wasn&#039;t the reaction he&#039;d expected. He glanced at Shawn, who simply nodded, a grim smile playing on his lips. <br /><br />``You&#039;ll wipe the floor with him,&#039;&#039; Shawn affirmed. ``Just... maybe not today.&#039;&#039;<br /><br />Basil shook her head, her expression softening. ``Ali, you&#039;re a fighter. Always have been. And a fighter has to fight. But,&#039;&#039; she added, her voice firm, ``you have to be smart about it.&#039;&#039;<br /><br />Alister gasped, his heart swelling with warmth. ``But... I charged in like an idiot. I made a fool of myself.&#039;&#039;<br /><br />Basil and Shawn exchanged a knowing look, a silent conversation passing between them. Their lips twitched, suppressing chuckles. <br /><br />``Why are you laughing?&#039;&#039; Alister&#039;s ears drooped. ``This isn&#039;t funny.&#039;&#039;<br /><br />``Because we expected that from your Ali,&#039;&#039; Shawn said, his voice laced with amusement. ``But we?re a team, partners though it all. We help each other up when we?re down. You guys taught me that.&quot; Shawn puts a paw on his pink collar. &quot; We wear these collars not just for show, silly.&#039;&#039;<br /><br />Basil leaned down, placing a gentle kiss on Alister&#039;s head. ``He?s right&quot; Basil touches her red collar as it sat comfortably around her neck. Alister remembered when Basil made them long ago when she ironically proposed to him. He was such a hard head back then, barely realizing that the greatest treasure of his life had been sitting under his nose. &quot; We?re strongest when we?re together. Its going to take more than some bad breath lizard to break our bond.&quot; Her smile was soft, reassuring.<br /><br />Alister felt tears building in his eyes and he found himself wiping his face. He couldn?t believe what he was hearing right now. Alister felt a surge of gratitude, his previous shame melting away. He threw his arms around both of them, holding them close. ``Thanks, guys. I... I needed that.&#039;&#039;<br /><br />As they huddled together, a gruff cough broke the moment. A towering Sandslash, clad in the city guard&#039;s armor, stood behind them. His expression was stern, but there was a hint of amusement in his eyes.<br /><br />``You&#039;re free to enter, pups,&#039;&#039; the Sandslash rumbled. ``But try not to start any more brawls before you even cross the threshold. We have enough of those inside the city walls already.&#039;&#039;<br /><br />Alister, Basil, and Shawn chuckled, a newfound lightness in their hearts. They nodded their thanks to the guard and stepped through the towering city gates, leaving the setting sun and the memory of their encounter with that loud mouth Charmander behind them.<br /><br />What was his name again...who cares.<br /><br />As they walked the dusty streets, Alister felt his excitement returning. He glanced around, his senses heightened. The air buzzed with a different kind of energy, a chaotic symphony of shouts, laughter, and the clang of training weapons. <br /><br />If everyone here was like that foul breath lizard, then he truly had his work cut out for him.<br /><br /></span>",
