Tahla and I were at a park where Telain practiced baseball. We decided to wander around a little bit. We came across a young arctic fox, sitting by her lonesome on a bench. Jump-ropes were curled up under her feet. She was sort of fidgeting with her tail, and looked up a time or two, before casting her gaze back down.
"She looks sad," Tahla frowned. "C'mon, let's go say hi," she urged, bapping me on the arm.
"Sure," I agreed. Not like I wasn't thinking the same thing, just a second later.
She noticed us approaching. She almost looked a little scared about it.
"Hey," Tahla greeted, resting her hands on her knees to be nose-level with the younger girl. "Ya doin' all right, there?"
I sat down on the bench next to the vixen.
"I'm-m-m f-fine," she said nervously, picking at her tail.
"Well, if you say so. Why ya sittin' next to that bozo, though?" Tahla pointed at me.
"Huh?" The bow on the foxe's hair wobbled when she turned her head to look at me. She looked back to Tahla. "He... Can sit there... You don't gotta be mean..."
"Yeah, don't be mean," I repeated, jokingly, sticking my tongue out at the vee.
"My name's Tahla," she said, straightening up. "What's yours?"
"Uhm-m... A--Aggie," the snow-vixen muttered.
"Howdy, Aggie," Tahla greeted, formally. She stepped over to me, and hefted up my tail. "This is Norville," she introduced.
Aggie blinked, and lifted a meager wave to me. "Hi, Norville."
"Naw, he's not Norville," Tahla corrected, shaking my tail. "This is Norville. That lump attached to him is Lemmy."
"Excuse me? It's Mister That-Lump-Attached-To-Him, to you," I admonished.
Aggie let out a timid giggle, while Tahla and I exchanged glances.
"So whatchya doin'? Incubatin'?" Tahla asked, using her foot to nudge the jump-ropes under the younger girls feet.
The fox shook her head. "I'm... Waiting for my friends, so we can play." She explained.
"Want us to keep you company till they get here?" I offered.
She shook her head again. "Huh-uh, you don't hafta... I been... Waiting a while..." The last few words were barely above mumbles.
"A little while, or a long while?" Tahla asked.
The girl seemed to regress back to nervousness.
"S-Since... Uhm... B-Before lunch time..."
Tahla and I exchanged glances, again.
It was already past two o'clock.
She was staring at her tail. Staring very intently, as if it were a Weeping Angel she had to keep locked in place. She only broke eye-contact when she noticed the ciols beneath her feet slithering away.
Her eye followed the movement to my shoe. I paused, then dragged my shoe closer to be able to pick up the ropes.
"Whatchya s'pose these doo-hickeys are?" Tahla asked, picking up one end of the jump-rope.
"Dunno. Think you're supposed to play Tug-Of-War with them."
"N-N-No, please! Mommy'll get mad if I break another jump-rope..."
"Lemmy, don't be mean," Tahla mocked, sticking her tongue out at me.
"Okay, fine," I replied, picking up the other end of the jump-ropes. "You need even numbers to play Tug-Of-War fairly, anyways. We're an odd-bunch."
"With you bein' the odd-one-out, right girl?" Tahla looked at the fox for support.
She was still a little intimidated, just giving a blank stare.
"Okay, okay," Tahla chuckled. "C'mon, we're gonna play with ya, got it?"
"Uhm... Th-That's okay, I'm s-sure my friends will... Be... Here... ... ...Soon," she weakly protested.
"Well, we can at least play until they get here," I suggested. "Or until Tah and I gotta leave. That way, you can jump rope sooner."
She seemed to blush a little bit. "Y--You're sure? You don't gotta..."
Tahla led the way to a spot nearby on the asphalt, underneath the shade of a tree.
"D-Do you wanna jump first?" Aggie asked, looking between the two of us.
"Huh-uh," I replied. "These are your ropes; you go first."
"Yeah, besides you're the one's been waitin' ferever," Tahla added.
She was blushing even more, now, sort of bouncing on her heels while Tahla and I fixed the ropes up so they were even and de-kinked.
You'd think we'd just gotten her a pony for her birthday or something, with how excited she was to finally get to do an activity she needed a couple other friends to do.
