He has always been large for his age, large for even most rats. Both in size and weight. He'd tried dieting, exercise, everything he could to lose weight but it never happened. That resulted in him being teased all the way through school.\n\nThings took a turn when he reached puberty though. He found out the hard way that while he was externally male, internally he was a herm. When both sides of him woke up, he really started putting on size and weight and even started growing breasts. His parents took him to the doctor where they found the problem and operated, removing the ovaries making him undergo female changes. They also did a breast reduction to try to bring his chest back to normal.\n\nThis worked, but only for a while. While his female parts stayed gone, his DNA was locked into what he'd developed into and his breasts and weight grew back with a vengeance. That resulted in even more teasing. That drove him to the end of his rope, running away from school and hiding one day. He met Hanzo on that day, who introduced him to the basics of discipline and being a ninja.\n\nAfter some initial teaching, Hanzo formally invited Gara to join the Clan, who enthusiastically accepted.
