Well, this seems like as good a time as any to get caught up on the one holiday I do celebrate. So for 2019, the Prowler family is representing some upcoming titles; this is basically my wishlist for 2020.
First up is the matriarch Kris as Sash Lilac in her Freedom Planet 2 redesign. Freedom Planet was one of those games that got a lot of press for being one thing (Sonic clone) but the reality is so much more than that. It's a celebration of all the Genesis classics to create a truly unique experience that found success on its own merits. The sequel is looking like more of the same so far but that's absolutely not a bad thing. And if I'm being honest, while I like Carol best out of the cast, Lilac's costume for 2 is amazing!
Anyway, next up is Jynx as Tifa Lockhart of Final Fantasy 7 Remake. Now this one I really need to preface by saying I am not a fan of the original Final Fantasy 7, and in fact I consider it to be the single most overrated game of all time and the beginning of the decline of the series. That said, I'm excited for this for two reasons. First off, I've become a fan of action games and ARPGs over the years, so the gameplay of this is really looking to be right up my alley. Second and more importantly though, it's impossible not to notice the level of love and care going into the development, something that is becoming increasingly rare in the AAA marketplace which is so disgustingly anti-consumer... That by itself is enough to make me want to back this project, and if it's anything like the RE2 remake it's gong to be a generation-defining RPG.
Sara as Princess Riesz from Trials of Mana Remake. I've been a fan of this game since back when we all referred to it as Seiken Densetsu 3 in the fan translation, seeing as how it somehow never released in the west despite the success of the vastly inferior Secret of Mana (instead we got Secret of Evermore so...). Anyway, this is a complete reimmagining of the systems and graphics (obviously, being 3D now) making it into something akin to (groan...) Kingdom Hearts. I've always maintained that the Mana series deserved a proper shot at a 3D game (the less said about that other 3D game the better...) so I'm glad they're taking it with one of the more traditional games in the series. Those of you who know the game are probably a little surprised I didn't go with Angela but, well, her costume's a little too on-the-nose for my tastes.
And last but not least, Carol as Blaze Feilding in her Streets of Rage 4 "redesign". While the jacket is a nice touch, she's otherwise the same woman from 2 onward; interesting considering how much Axel and Adam appear to have aged in the game. SOR2 was one of my first games ever, and it's still my favorite official beat-em-up ever (much love to bombergames for SORR). In that regard, I will freely admit that I'm blinded by nostalgia in regards to this game. I love the way it looks in motion: hopefully it feels as good to play, but either way I'm totally on-board. I know this technically isn't a fighting game character but Carol does play other stuff from time to time. And anyway, this game seems to be taking some notes from modern action and fighting games in its combat.
Anyway, also included is a nude version because of course there's going to be a nude version. It is me after all...
