This mixed with two varying cultures, one who embraced the changes and one who made slaves of them led me to trying to find an early victorian photo I had once seen of a young pregnant prostitute. I did not find that image, but I did find Jens Galschiot's sculpture of a crucified pregnant teenager . I was struck by this image, and soon had an image of one of my story's characters coming across a figure treated in the same way. The whole concept of life being bought sold and discarded over a simple ring of metal struck me, and so I wanted to commission this image, the mix of human and animal done in the same way as the inspiring image.
I do not mean any disrespect by the character being on a cross. Crucifiction was simple a nasty way to die, which was why it was used so prevalently and publicly in the dark days of the world. Later on, this would be changed to people being put into cages and left to die of exposure and hunger, much like they would be if left on the cross. I could have gone that route, but wanted to copy the original image as much as possible.
