As you can see, I had just woken from a rather vivid and inspirational dream, despite it taking place entirely within the span of less than a minute, or the perceptual equivalent thereof. How do I begin... Mind of course that, like most dreams, it's right silly, so don't judge...
The scene starts with my parents and me exiting a hotel; it seems that we were at a theme park, the likes of Disney World or something. Especially in this region of the park, they were flagrantly flaunting their newly released animated feature film; all sorts of promotional materials and merchandise adorned every corner of the streets and shops, and the soundtrack ubiquitously permeated the air. It was a very lively tune, supposedly an instrumental version of the first musical number of the film. My mum and I skipped along the road, singing along with the wordless music for a few measures, whilst I actively contemplated the relatively complex structure of the song - its time signature, key changes, the way each verse was melodically different from the others...
(Although I can unfortunately no longer remember the fictional song, upon waking reflection, the two comparable real-world counterparts I found that approximately mirror its rhythm, melody, and level of energy and excitement were, say, One Short Day, and, oddly enough, 3D World Runner. o.o)
So anyway, we were singing along to this fictional melody, when one of the park staff comes up between us from behind, a girl in fancy dress of one of the characters in this supposed film. She clearly saw how lively we were getting into the song, so she puts her arms around our shoulders and encouragingly starts singing along as well, but she the words of the original supposed song.
All the while, again, I was thinking about the composition of this song, and about the source material whence it came. At this point, the premise of the film was revealed to me in the form of a series of very quick images (under a second apiece), the most vivid of which I've recreated here.
The plot centred about a boy and girl who live on the streets of a port town. The two urchins are effectively - if not literally - orphans, and rely on themselves and one another to make a "living". Fortunately, with all the traffic coming through the port, the can usually get away with some innocent thievery or pawning, and manage to avoid detection or recognition amidst the bustling crowd. In a childish way, the two could be considered pirates, which is just how they fancy themselves, too. However, in one their everyday adventures, they find themselves aboard a docked ship of real pirates, which bodes ill for the pair hiding inside when it hauls anchor and sets sail on the open seas. Their unwitting involvement with these pirates becomes the primarily tale of the film - their conflicts, cooperations, and ultimately their quest to return to what little they can call home.
As a side note, at some point around here in the dream, I also realised and marvelled (no pun intended) at the total number of pirate-oriented intellectual properties Disney then had, including this anonymous one.
So that's all that happened in (that segment of) the dream, but again, it left a very profound and vivid impression on me - especially that one image - so I knew I had to manifest it into waking life and share it with you lot. Which I finally did about a month later, despite starting it the very next day.
Although not part of the original dream, I developed a few other details whilst drawing this. For example, I think an appropriate name for this girl would be Maria. Like, perhaps, Maria Del Mar. But, considering she only lives with her friend, I imagine that the two of them would have nicknames by which they call each other and otherwise try to be known. Hers would be Jellyfish, or occasionally just Jelly. I tried briefly to think of her counterpart's moniker, but have been so far unsuccessful, although I suppose that's unimportant because he's not pictured here.
So, there you have it. Another of many instances of a dream being so inspiring as to prompt real-world creativity. I don't know if we'll ever see this character again, as I can't think of anything worthwhile to do with her... Any thoughts?
