"writing": "Niel groaned as he untangled himself from the sleeping men on the floor. “Fuck.” He stretched, and his back popped. Now he understood why the carpet was so plush, but he didn’t want to think of what the cleaning bill for it was.\n\nAfter Roland had gone through all the men in the room, his hunting had been more targeted. Thomas, Eric, and Niel had been at the top of the repeats, or that was how it seemed to the raccoon, for how often he’d stepped away from someone and found himself with his best friend pushing him to the floor.\n\nHe carefully stepped around the men and exited to the kitchen, where Nadia and other women cooked. The clock said thirteen sixteen, and Niel tried to work out the date. “Is this Saturday or Sunday?”\n\n“Sunday, honey,” a panda said, looking over her shoulder and up and down his body. “There is food on the table in the other room.”\n\nThe discomfort at being naked in front of a woman gave way to the idea of eating, and he was in that room taking in the scents, before he remembered he couldn’t eat just yet. Then he realized his body hadn’t reacted to the broth he’d had before the orgy started.\n\nHe turned around and headed to the bathroom; other than he really had to go.\n\nHe returned to more people gathered around the table, talking and sampling the food. The naked men with their fur matted with cum, like his, were from the dining slash sex room, but at least half of them were dressed, and not men. After the frat and Olavo’s home, Niel was finding it difficult to get used to an even distribution between men and women in one room.\n\n“Chima,” He called to the hyena as he entered the room, and motioned to those in the around. “Is this the norm, or the exception?”\n\nChima blearily looked around. “People do tend to get dressed.”\n\n“I mean the men and women.”\n\nHe shrug. “Probably the exception. Each family’s different.”\n\n“It is normal for the Xu and Jian to mix,” a red panda said. She was his age, and wearing a green and black dress. She gave a small bow. “I am Guan Shu. My family acts as transition… no, middle ground, between the Xu and their counterpart within the Convent.\n\nChima headed for the food with an annoyed groan.\n\n“Any idea what that’s about?” Niel asked.\n\nShe looked at him blankly for a second, and Niel wondered if his question hadn’t been clear, then she nodded. “Some Society families are not friends to the Convent. It is possible that is the case for his family. I do not know.”\n\n“Why would they object to a convent?”\n\nShe smiled. “No. The Convent.” This time he noticed the capitalized ‘c’, but he didn’t understand its meaning. “They are the women counterpart to the Society.”\n\n“There are—” He frowned. “You’re talking about a female counterpart to Him, right?” he pointed up after a moment of hesitation. Where was he supposed to point to mean the god of male sex? He wasn’t pointing to his crotch. “Because I’m pretty certain He hasn’t started accepting women as followers.”\n\n“That is correct. The Convent are the followers of the Holy Lady of the Womb.”\n\n“Okay.” He stared. “While that’s better than just emphasizing male pronouns all the time. It’s a bit of mouthful.”\n\n“It is considered disrespectful for those who do not worship Her directly to say Her true name.”\n\n“Don’t you worship Her?”\n\n“She’s Guan,” Yating said, or it could be Yahui. Naked, there were no ways to tell them apart. “Every other child from my family and the Jing are moved, taken in by the Guans. They’ll be husbands or wives to the other family when their time comes.” He paused to kiss Shu.\n\nThe other twin joined them. “That’s why there was a panic when I manifested powers after Yating’s ceremony. I lived with the Guan then. The Guan elders were understandingly confused. But it wasn’t until it was confirmed with others that identical twins both become initiated when one of them goes through the ceremony that the other adults accepted that I wouldn’t return to the Guans.” \n\nYahui kiss Shu as well, then draped an arm around her waist in a mirror of his twin.\n\n“Are you three…”\n\n“Courting,” Shu replied, then kissed each man on the cheek in turn.\n\n“If my brother and I are the same in the eyes of the gods,” Yuhui said, “then we can both be fathers to our sons.”\n\n“I swear,” Chima said, handing Niel a plate of sausages and eggs along with a mug of coffee. “All my friends are marrying too early.”\n\nNiel looked at the plate he held, wondering what to do with it.\n\n“Aren’t you hungry?” the hyena said between large fork full of his own eggs and sausages.\n\n“Not really. I guess you didn’t hear. I live off sex now. And, at least for a while longer, solid food doesn’t agree with me. It’s a transition thing,” he added at Chima’s tilted ear.\n\n“Oh, thank Him.” A black furred hand reached around his left and grabbed the plate, while a white furred one tried for the mug, which Niel moved. “I so didn’t feel like dealing with the lineup.” Roland shoved food in his mouth. “I didn’t realize how hungry I’d get fucking everyone. Multiple times.” He grinned at the raccoon.\n\n“I guess that’s going to be your power, then. Fucking all the guys,” Niel said.\n\nRoland snorted, then covered his mouth. “Don’t do that while I’m eating. I think I have food up my nose now.”\n\n“Then don’t talk with your mouth full?” Niel smiled.\n\nRoland rolled his eyes. “Fucking guys isn’t a power. It’s the norm. What about you? What’s your power now that you’re one of us?”\n\n“I…” Niel looked around trying to come up with an excuse not to talk about not aging where so many people could hear.\n\n“Come on,” Roland insisted. “It can’t be living off the sex. That’s basically our thing, minus the living off it part.”\n\n“There’s a phrase for that,” Hubert said. His plate had a series of deviled eggs arranged around a glazed steak. Niel licked his lips, recognizing Nadia’s work.\n\n“There’s a phrase for everything,” Roland said dismissively. “It doesn’t count.”\n\n“I know it’s hereditary.” Niel settled for a half-truth. “Part of the reason I went to Argentina was so the Cuevet could give me information, but you had to get impatient and have your ceremony early.” Niel grinned at the rat. “So plans had to change.”\n\nRoland patted the raccoon’s ass. “Like you’re complaining.”\n\n“But it means you’ll have to wait until I have all the information I want.” In private, Niel promised himself, he’d tell his best friend everything.\n\n“Who are those Cuevet?” Hubert asked before popping an egg in his mouth.\n\nNiel cursed himself silently for the slip-up and searched the room. Olavo was in conversation with an older red panda, and it didn’t look like it was going well. No going to the capybara for a rescue then. Was there anything he could say and not get in trouble?\n\n“They’re a family living in Argentina. They also follow Him, but they aren’t Society. They’re also a different bloodline than whichever one I am.”\n\n“You speak of the Orrs?” a panda asked eagerly, joining them.\n\n“Who are the Orrs?” Niel asked.\n\n“No one you—”\n\n“They’re the people Madoc and Trevor work for.” Roland ignored the hyena’s glare.\n\nNiel looked from one to the other and decided not to broach that subject again. “I need to ask Olavo something.” Extricating himself from the mounting tension Chima projected before Roland objected, he headed for the capybara and panda.\n\nThe conversation between the two men was in hushed Spanish that carried tension of its own. Niel started to turn away, deciding that was also not a good idea.\n\n“May we assist you?” the panda asked, all tension gone and the smile looking genuine.\n\nThe look Olavo gave Niel wasn’t pleased, but it wasn’t like the raccoon could teleport.\n\n“I was wondering if you’d heard from your family, Lav. You told me to wait until things calm down between them, then…” he motioned around the room. “We’ve been here most of a day, so…”\n\nThe capybara closed his eyes, looking pained.\n\n“What a wonderful idea,” the panda exclaimed. “You should contact your father, Medeiros. It is unbecoming of you to leave your friend in such a distressed state.”\n\nWhat had he just stepped in? When Olavo opened his eyes, Niel mouthed, “Sorry.”\n\n“It’s not your fault.” The capybara placed the call and spoke quietly in Spanish, glaring at the smug panda occasionally. “Are you certain?” he said in surprised English. He listened, then covered the microphone. “They’ve located him. In France.”\n\n“What’s your dad doing in France?” Roland asked, from behind Niel, a full plate in hand again.\n\n* * * * *\n\n“A week.” Niel paced the room. That was the best he could hope for.\n\n“It won’t be that bad,” Olavo said. “I’ll even pay for a first-class seat for you.”\n\n“Why not let me use the jet instead?” he looked for Roland, but the rat had run off. Great. Abandoned by his best friend when he could really use someone to bitch to. Why couldn’t thing just line up for once?\n\n“The jet isn’t mine, and my father only lets me use it when I go home.”\n\n“Right,” Niel muttered.\n\n“What’s wrong?”\n\n“Nothing.”\n\n“Niel, we might not be close friends, but I know you enough to tell when something’s bothering you.”\n\n“It’s this whole damned thing.” He threw his hands in the air. “Just a few days ago, I find out my dad’s not my father. Basically, at the same time, that I’m part of your faction. Now that I know where my father is, I have to wait until next weekend to go see him because I can’t miss classes.”\n\n“If it’s that important for you, I can arrange for you to have a flight today. That should put you in France at some point tomorrow. If you leave the next day, you’d be back in Minneapolis by the middle of the week.”\n\n“I have a test Tuesday morning.” Niel thought about it. “Although, if the news of my recovery was slow to spread, I might be excused.” He shook his head. “But if Coach Horgar finds out I wasn’t back at practice as soon as possible, not even telling him the hazing was responsible for what happened would stop him from grilling me to the point my tail would be seared.” He sighed. “I know it’s stupid. A week isn’t going to make a difference. But I want to know why my biological father never contacted me. It’s not like my dad forbade him to. I want this done and dealt with now.”\n\n“It sounds to me like having to wait may be a good thing. It would give you time to work out how you feel. Maybe waiting a few weeks would be better.”\n\n“Fuck waiting,” Roland said, returning with a confused Thomas. “Why wait, when you have instant transportation right here?”\n\n“Do you need to head home now?” Thomas asked.\n\n“France,” Roland replied, confusing his brother even more.\n\nNiel took a breath to settle himself, then explained the developing situation.\n\n“You can get him there,” Roland said. “He talks with the guy, then you take him home, and he’s in the States before Olavo.”\n\nThomas sighed. “Roland, do you have any idea how big France is? I have two landing spots there. Just getting Niel to his father from one of them could take longer than him flying to the closest airport.”\n\n“Where does that man live?” Roland asked.\n\nNiel looked at Olavo, who consulted his phone, scrolling a few times.\n\n“The address is in the town of Boiseuil.” The capybara kept reading silently.\n\n“Why does it sound familiar?” Roland asked.\n\n“Can you google it, Olavo? My phone is in my pants, which are… somewhere in this house. The last time I saw them was two days ago, before I left to pick everyone up.”\n\nThe capybara projected the map over his phone. “That’s Boiseuil.” He pointed to the highlighted dot.\n\n“No wonder it sounded familiar.” Thomas zoomed the map until a second dot touching Boiseuil was visible. “Victor lives just outside Poulenat. He does his groceries in Boiseuil.”\n\n“And I’m guessing one of those two landing spots is at your brother’s,” Niel said in disbelief. “That’s quite the coincidence.”\n\n“Next to it,” Thomas said. “And it has to be a coincidence. He can’t have a hand in this, because Victor lives in a Practitioner safe house.”\n\n“What’s a Practitioner?” Niel asked. \n\nRoland grinned. “Oh, just wait until you meet Grant.” Then he was rushing off. “I’m checking with mom and dad if they want in on visiting Vic!”\n\nThomas pinched the bridge of his nose. “Please don’t let him get super speed,” in implored. “He’s already impossible to keep track of.”",

Niel licked his lips, recognizing Nadia&rsquo;s work.<br /><br />&ldquo;There&rsquo;s a phrase for everything,&rdquo; Roland said dismissively. &ldquo; It doesn&rsquo;t count.&rdquo;<br /><br />&ldquo;I know it&rsquo;s hereditary.&rdquo; Niel settled for a half-truth. &ldquo;Part of the reason I went to Argentina was so the Cuevet could give me information, but you had to get impatient and have your ceremony early.&rdquo; Niel grinned at the rat. &ldquo; So plans had to change.&rdquo;<br /><br />Roland patted the raccoon&rsquo;s ass. &ldquo;Like you&rsquo;re complaining.&rdquo;<br /><br />&ldquo;But it means you&rsquo;ll have to wait until I have all the information I want.&rdquo; In private, Niel promised himself, he&rsquo;d tell his best friend everything.<br /><br />&ldquo;Who are those Cuevet?&rdquo; Hubert asked before popping an egg in his mouth.<br /><br />Niel cursed himself silently for the slip-up and searched the room. Olavo was in conversation with an older red panda, and it didn&rsquo;t look like it was going well. No going to the capybara for a rescue then. Was there anything he could say and not get in trouble?<br /><br />&ldquo;They&rsquo;re a family living in Argentina. They also follow Him, but they aren&rsquo;t Society. They&rsquo;re also a different bloodline than whichever one I am.&rdquo;<br /><br />&ldquo;You speak of the Orrs?&rdquo; a panda asked eagerly, joining them.<br /><br />&ldquo;Who are the Orrs?&rdquo; Niel asked.<br /><br />&ldquo;No one you&mdash;&rdquo;<br /><br />&ldquo;They&rsquo;re the people Madoc and Trevor work for.&rdquo; Roland ignored the hyena&rsquo;s glare.<br /><br />Niel looked from one to the other and decided not to broach that subject again. &ldquo;I need to ask Olavo something.&rdquo; Extricating himself from the mounting tension Chima projected before Roland objected, he headed for the capybara and panda.<br /><br />The conversation between the two men was in hushed Spanish that carried tension of its own. Niel started to turn away, deciding that was also not a good idea.<br /><br />&ldquo;May we assist you?&rdquo; the panda asked, all tension gone and the smile looking genuine.<br /><br />The look Olavo gave Niel wasn&rsquo;t pleased, but it wasn&rsquo;t like the raccoon could teleport.<br /><br />&ldquo;I was wondering if you&rsquo;d heard from your family, Lav. You told me to wait until things calm down between them, then&hellip;&rdquo; he motioned around the room. &ldquo; We&rsquo;ve been here most of a day, so&hellip;&rdquo;<br /><br />The capybara closed his eyes, looking pained.<br /><br />&ldquo;What a wonderful idea,&rdquo; the panda exclaimed. &ldquo; You should contact your father, Medeiros. It is unbecoming of you to leave your friend in such a distressed state.&rdquo;<br /><br />What had he just stepped in? When Olavo opened his eyes, Niel mouthed, &ldquo;Sorry.&rdquo;<br /><br />&ldquo;It&rsquo;s not your fault.&rdquo; The capybara placed the call and spoke quietly in Spanish, glaring at the smug panda occasionally. &ldquo; Are you certain?&rdquo; he said in surprised English. He listened, then covered the microphone. &ldquo; They&rsquo;ve located him. In France.&rdquo;<br /><br />&ldquo;What&rsquo;s your dad doing in France?&rdquo; Roland asked, from behind Niel, a full plate in hand again.<br /><br />* * * * *<br /><br />&ldquo;A week.&rdquo; Niel paced the room. That was the best he could hope for.<br /><br />&ldquo;It won&rsquo;t be that bad,&rdquo; Olavo said. &ldquo;I&rsquo;ll even pay for a first-class seat for you.&rdquo;<br /><br />&ldquo;Why not let me use the jet instead?&rdquo; he looked for Roland, but the rat had run off. Great. Abandoned by his best friend when he could really use someone to bitch to. Why couldn&rsquo;t thing just line up for once?<br /><br />&ldquo;The jet isn&rsquo;t mine, and my father only lets me use it when I go home.&rdquo;<br /><br />&ldquo;Right,&rdquo; Niel muttered.<br /><br />&ldquo;What&rsquo;s wrong?&rdquo;<br /><br />&ldquo;Nothing.&rdquo;<br /><br />&ldquo;Niel, we might not be close friends, but I know you enough to tell when something&rsquo;s bothering you.&rdquo;<br /><br />&ldquo;It&rsquo;s this whole damned thing.&rdquo; He threw his hands in the air. &ldquo;Just a few days ago, I find out my dad&rsquo;s not my father. Basically, at the same time, that I&rsquo;m part of your faction. Now that I know where my father is, I have to wait until next weekend to go see him because I can&rsquo;t miss classes.&rdquo;<br /><br />&ldquo;If it&rsquo;s that important for you, I can arrange for you to have a flight today. That should put you in France at some point tomorrow. If you leave the next day, you&rsquo;d be back in Minneapolis by the middle of the week.&rdquo;<br /><br />&ldquo;I have a test Tuesday morning.&rdquo; Niel thought about it. &ldquo;Although, if the news of my recovery was slow to spread, I might be excused.&rdquo; He shook his head. &ldquo; But if Coach Horgar finds out I wasn&rsquo;t back at practice as soon as possible, not even telling him the hazing was responsible for what happened would stop him from grilling me to the point my tail would be seared.&rdquo; He sighed. &ldquo;I know it&rsquo;s stupid. A week isn&rsquo;t going to make a difference. But I want to know why my biological father never contacted me. It&rsquo;s not like my dad forbade him to. I want this done and dealt with now.&rdquo;<br /><br />&ldquo;It sounds to me like having to wait may be a good thing. It would give you time to work out how you feel. Maybe waiting a few weeks would be better.&rdquo;<br /><br />&ldquo;Fuck waiting,&rdquo; Roland said, returning with a confused Thomas. &ldquo; Why wait, when you have instant transportation right here?&rdquo;<br /><br />&ldquo;Do you need to head home now?&rdquo; Thomas asked.<br /><br />&ldquo;France,&rdquo; Roland replied, confusing his brother even more.<br /><br />Niel took a breath to settle himself, then explained the developing situation.<br /><br />&ldquo;You can get him there,&rdquo; Roland said. &ldquo; He talks with the guy, then you take him home, and he&rsquo;s in the States before Olavo.&rdquo;<br /><br />Thomas sighed. &ldquo;Roland, do you have any idea how big France is? I have two landing spots there. Just getting Niel to his father from one of them could take longer than him flying to the closest airport.&rdquo;<br /><br />&ldquo;Where does that man live?&rdquo; Roland asked.<br /><br />Niel looked at Olavo, who consulted his phone, scrolling a few times.<br /><br />&ldquo;The address is in the town of Boiseuil.&rdquo; The capybara kept reading silently.<br /><br />&ldquo;Why does it sound familiar?&rdquo; Roland asked.<br /><br />&ldquo;Can you google it, Olavo? My phone is in my pants, which are&hellip; somewhere in this house. The last time I saw them was two days ago, before I left to pick everyone up.&rdquo;<br /><br />The capybara projected the map over his phone. &ldquo; That&rsquo;s Boiseuil.&rdquo; He pointed to the highlighted dot.<br /><br />&ldquo;No wonder it sounded familiar.&rdquo; Thomas zoomed the map until a second dot touching Boiseuil was visible. &ldquo;Victor lives just outside Poulenat. He does his groceries in Boiseuil.&rdquo;<br /><br />&ldquo;And I&rsquo;m guessing one of those two landing spots is at your brother&rsquo;s,&rdquo; Niel said in disbelief. &ldquo; That&rsquo;s quite the coincidence.&rdquo;<br /><br />&ldquo;Next to it,&rdquo; Thomas said. &ldquo; And it has to be a coincidence. He can&rsquo;t have a hand in this, because Victor lives in a Practitioner safe house.&rdquo;<br /><br />&ldquo;What&rsquo;s a Practitioner?&rdquo; Niel asked. <br /><br />Roland grinned. &ldquo;Oh, just wait until you meet Grant.&rdquo; Then he was rushing off. &ldquo;I&rsquo;m checking with mom and dad if they want in on visiting Vic!&rdquo;<br /><br />Thomas pinched the bridge of his nose. &ldquo; Please don&rsquo;t let him get super speed,&rdquo; in implored. &ldquo; He&rsquo;s already impossible to keep track of.&rdquo;</span>",
