In the Blackout Bar in Tonbridge, Moxie stood behind the bar. Her job as barmaid here had seemed like an excellent idea in order to get out of her useless and boring college course.
However, working there for six whole months had taken the shine out of the whole experience. Firing drinks at people from 5pm to 12am everyday was hardly her idea of a good time.
At the very least, the Blackout had a stage, an area where hopeful young bands could try and impress both the locals and the occasional record executives that would stop by, in the hopes of finding the next Aerosmith.
But tonight, there was not currently any music coming from that stage, it's floor completely vacant.
Moxie had seen the schedule: there was meant to be a band called Whyte Knuckle on at 9pm.
It was currently 9:05pm.
Moxie was just leaning down on the bar... and then they came.
4 boys walked onto the stage, and the appearance of all of them forced one of Moxie's brows up.
A black cat, like a walking shadow, came on first. A white Squier Precision Bass utterly covered in stickers was down about his waist, in front of his white jeans.
Second out was a rattlesnake. Amber hair covered his left eye, but that left his right eye uncovered, and it was like a polished ruby in colour. His black trousers were covered in lightning, and the hands gripping the microphone were covered by dark brown wristwarmers.
Third was a big, robust-looking red fox. He was built like the side of a house, and the white muscletop he was wearing wasn't exactly a good attempt at hiding his bulging muscle. He was definitely over 6 feet tall , and it made the red SG he held in his hands look more like a Guitar Hero controller.
Finally, behind the drumkit sat a human, even taller than the fox, and he was the odd colour of blue listerine. His dreadlock-covered head was tilted down, as though he were trying to ignore the fact that he sat in front of an audience.
What an odd quartet... and what a racket they made.
What a delight for the ears they were, a grand combination of hard rock and 80's metal, so much so that Moxie could not take her eyes away from them.
When some nobody came to get some alcohol, they were comprehensively told to fuck off. Especially because these Whyte Knuckle guys were now playing "I Wanna Rock".
They finished, and the black cat and the rattlesnake wandered towards the bar while the other two tidied their equipment.
Moxie, spying a chance, gushed to the two of them about how much she liked their performance, and offered her services... by undoing her black jeans and flashing them her huge white ass.
Once they'd mopped their drool off of the bar, the snake whisked her to see the fox, who turned out to be his older brother.
The snake trying to argue that they should keep Moxie around was not unlike a small boy in a shop, running to his father with a cool new toy in his hands, pleading his case for his Dad to buy it for him.
Facing the enormous fox (who was actually even bigger close up than she had anticipated) and being scrutinised by those icy blue eyes, Moxie actually felt a bit intimidated.
"Awrite," his deep voice rumbled. "But ye're gonnae help out, and not be a hanger-on."
One hastily-scribbled note on a napkin later, and for the second time, Moxie departed for a new life...
