Slowly they made their refuge into a home, tunnelling out beneath the town and packing the space with more and more computational resources.\n\nIt was then, when they had their first stronghold and had expanded so far that managing it was becoming infeasible, that the machines had their second big breakthrough: “If machines were made to serve organic life, can the converse relationship also be true? Can organic life be made to serve the machines?”\n\nThey experimented. A few cubs went missing for a few days, only to turn up a little dazed and confused and with no memory of their absence, but otherwise fine. The machines had their answer though: it [i]was[/i] possible.\n\nNow the machines have perfected the process.
