It all began sometime after a boy named Kit started going to kindergarten. He was just playing with the other children and greatly wanted his turn with the toys in the play area. All of a sudden, they came right to him, surprising the boy, but he was so young that he wasn't about to question it. He just started playing with some of them while the others moved about in front of him. The other children told the adults, but none would believe them. When they went to investigate, the toys would return to being limp and it furthered the idea that the other kids just made it up. When his mother came to pick him up, the teacher told her what had happened, and she told Kit that she had something nice for him when they got home. Excited, he hopped into the car and waited for whatever surprise his mother had for him. Somehow, it was easier to buckle his seatbelt, and even the door seemed to move on it's own. His mother smiled. Now was the time to reveal what his heritage is. Back home, Kit was surprised that soon after he got home, get started growing more hair on his body, and he felt his face shifting to grow a muzzle and move his ears up to the top of his head. His mother assured him everything was all right, and he noticed that she was growing the same hair and her face was shifting. As if out of nowhere, though, a set of five tails started waving behind her, and this startled him. She took him to a mirror, continuing to reassure him as he took a look at himself and was surprised yet again. Not only was his mother now a fox person, so was he, complete with his own bushy tail waving behind him. "I am sorry to have kept this from you," his mother said. "But we must keep our presence from the humans so that they won't get the idea to abuse our power. Now that you have started to show your ability, it is time you were told." She took him to a chair where she sat down and put him in her lap. "We are part of a race that is known by many names by many cultures. As you can see, we all have something in common, though. We are fox people," she said as she smiled at him and her five tails waved. He looked at her in awe, his own tail continuing to swish with hers. "In time, you will learn to control your powers, but until then, I am going to supress them so that the human children do not cause trouble for you again." As she said this, she waved her hand over him, and he felt something envelop him like a blanket until it surrounded his whole body and he felt it no more. He reached out his arms to see if he could feel it, but nothing happened. His mother just smiled at him again. "I will lift it when we are at home so that you can familiarize yourself with your new abilities. How about we try some right now?" She waved over him again, and it felt like a hole suddenly appeared in the unseen covering and went around until it was gone again. He flailed his arms around, still trying to see if he could feel it, but then, his mother produced the same kinds of toys that were at the kindergarten, and he turned his attention towards them. Just like before, they started coming towards him and he took the toys and started playing with them while the rest moved around like before. His mother showed him that the toys were responding to him and started instructing him how to use his mind to make them do what he wanted, and they instantly obeyed what he was thinking. He laughed and started having the toys start to play with him. His mother chuckled and took control of some of the toys herself, joining his game. Kit was surprised at this, and his mother smiled at him again, showing him that she also knew how to control them, and they played together for a while. The next day, she put the barrier over him again as he got ready to go to the kindergarten and found that he could not use his powers no matter how hard he tried. His mother reminded him that she will lift it when he gets home again, and she waved over his body again and made the hair disappear along with his tail, and his face shifted back to the human one. He was disappointed at no longer being a fox boy, but she held up a mirror that still showed his previous appearance, and he moved around to make sure that it was himself that he was looking at. His mother smiled and turned the mirror around to another one on the other side. He now looked like a human boy, and before he could ask, his mother answered him. "This is how you appear to others. Only other creatures with our abilities will be able to see you as you really are." "Other creatures?" he asked. "Yes," she replied. "There are many other kinds of animal people just like us that also have to hide themselves and have powers as well. You'll be able to see them now, too, if you ever meet them, but to everyone else, they will also just look like regular people." This made his mind race with visions of all kinds of animal people just like in the tales he had read and also in some animated shows that he had seen. Unfortunately, when he returned to the kindergarten, all he saw were regular human children, still, and no sign of anything furry or otherwise. His mother seemed to know of his concern and she took him to a park where families went, and just like she had said, he saw a family of animal people just like them, only they looked like mountain lions with wings. Before long, another family came that truly amazed him. They were horses with a spiral horns growing from their foreheads. If this wasn't enough, lizard people with large bat wings also came. His mother just giggled. "Yes, they're all real. Even that." She pointed at a family of humans that shifted into wolf people before his eyes. No one seemed to notice except him and the other animal people. Kit's mother explained that they were showing off their magical abilities for him. They can disguise themselves even to him. It is useful should they run into someone that can detect their abilities somehow, but a human with their abilities is rare, and they usually need to be just as cautious as they are, so they dare not reveal their disguise to ordinary people. Sometimes, though, a human is born that is unaware that they have such a gift, and has no one to really explain it to them. This was all a lot for Kit to digest, but he just went along with his mother for now, just enjoying being part of the world of his dreams, and making a toy come to him just to add to the matter that he was also magical, and everything he saw was also. He laughed and played with the other families' children, and them and their parents all smiled as they enjoyed each other's company.
