by Arrteen on FurAffinity\n\nI am deciding to make this image a little prequel to a series of other images I have already in commission which will continue the story\n \n~\nOliver was just about finished washing up when his next patient was wheeled into his operating room. Snapping on a new pair of gloves, Oliver welcomed in one of his frequent flyer patients in Ion who was scheduled to have major repair work done on his weakening heart. Ion was seriously injured on a Hunt years ago and as a result of his injuries had to have a mechanical arm grafted to him, to which his beating heart generated the power it needed in order to function. This put a lot of extra stress on his heart, which would be fine for a perfectly health one, but Ion's was far from that. During his life saving surgery he had to undergo from the injury, Ion went into sudden cardiac arrest to which the surgeons hard a hard time restarting it. This caused some damage to the left side, but for a few years after his recovery, Ion's Heart functioned normally. However eventually Ion started getting very tired easily and his breathing started to get very heavy. Ion was diagnosed with a leaky heart valve which needed replacing right away, opting to go with a tissue valve replacement over a mechanical one. He underwent the surgery successfully and returned to normal functionally fairly quickly but as time when on his symptoms started reappearing. Ion's new valve was deteriorating faster than normal, on average a tissue valve would last 10 years but he needed another new one in only 5. \n\nAfter this, new valves for Ion had to be replaced earlier and earlier, with Ion only having his last replacement about 4 months before this one. Oliver fir a while now, has recommended Ion have his heart replaced with specialized synthetic ones, a technology that has been around for a while and was very reliable and safe. Oliver had one himself, as he sustained a very serious chest injury and wouldn't be alive today if not for this technology existing, which lead him down the path of becoming a cardiac surgeon with specialties in synthetic organs. Ion though was apprehensive of having something inside of him that was unnatural keeping him alive, continuing to opt for valve replacement surgeries, even though they were becoming frequent. Oliver did make some progress in convincing Ion on synthetic organs, another result of his injury, Ion lost about a third of his intestines due to the damage and Oliver did convince Ion to have synthetic ones installed in their place, cutting down the frequency of his abdominal procedures. \n\nOliver started prepping Ion for his current surgery, placing the ECG electrodes on his chest, inserting a catheter down his sheath and finally strapping an oxygen mask to his face. He tried to have a small one on one with Ion, again trying to convince him that getting a synthetic heart was the way to go but Ion was still disinterested, just asking Oliver to start the procedure. Sighing Oliver started Ion's anesthetic drip and not long after Ion was fast asleep in his pain free environment. Grabbing the scalpel, Oliver made a large incision into Ion's chest, with the blade cutting fairly easy since his chest was only last cut open a few months ago, Oliver overshot the mark a bit as he accidentally glided the knife into his belly a bit. He pulled back Ion's blanket a bit, exposing his groin area to fully see his mistake but it was not overly bad, he could fix it when Ion was going to be stitched up so he left it for now and when back to Ion's chest. Grinding open the sternum after removing the previous surgery's closure plates, he pulled apart the rib cage to expose Ion's beating heart. \n\nOliver patiently grafted the bypass machine lines, as he needed to stop Ion's heart in order to replace the valve. With the lines snugly in place, Oliver injected Ion's heart with a substance that slowed it's beating very fast, eventually making it come to an almost complete stop. With Ion's heart now not beating, Oliver turned on the bypass machine to restore blood flow to the rest of Ion's body. Oliver then took the scalpel again and made an incision into the left side of Ion's heart, though the tissue cut quite easily as it was weak, making a bigger hole then he intended to. Noting that he would have to reinforce Ion's heart tissue latter, Oliver pulled open Ion's heart to reveal his deteriorated valve. Cutting out the old one, Oliver notices that the tissues around where the valve needed to be were also tearing quite easily, forcing him to reinforce the area by stitching in some synthetic tissues. Once he was comfortable with the integrity of the vessel, Oliver went ahead and installed Ion's new heart valve. This time Oliver decided to insert a mechanical one, hoping it would last a lot longer than the tissues ones Ion was having installed in his other surgeries, though with Ion's overall heart deterioration, he knew it was only a matter of time before Ion would need a total transplant. He hoped to still convince Ion on getting a synthetic heart, as this surgery was showing him just how far gone Ion's natural one is becoming, hoping to convince him before he suffered any serious cardiac incident or worst case instant death.\n\nWhen the valve was fully in place, Oliver stitched back up Ion's heart, adding more synthetic tissues to strengthen it. After allowing the heart to fill back up with blood, and making sure there were not leaks, Oliver then gave it a little shock and Ion's heart slowly started beating back to it's normal rhythm. Once satisfied that Ion's heart could take over his body function, Oliver turned off the bypass machine, removed the tubes and let Ion's heart fully get back to work. After waiting for the swelling to subside a bit, Oliver started closing back up Ion's chest, reinstalling the closure plates on his sternum and stitching closed the fur. Oliver repaired his mistake on Ion's belly, hoping Ion would not complain of the longer than normal scar but it was still down his preexisting one on his belly. Transferring Ion to a gurney, Oliver gave the ok to the nursed to transport him to the ICU where he would begin his recovery, waking up a bit latter to his waiting friends. \n\nWhen visiting time was over and Ion's friends had to leave, Oliver sat down to have a serious talk with Ion and Ion's mate Zephyr about the need to fully consider having his heart replaced. Ion was still apprehensive about the idea, but Oliver really knew he was just scared to have this done. He tried to put Ion at ease and help guide his decision reminding Ion that he himself had a synthetic heart now for over a decade and had no problems with it, like many other out there. He then told Ion about the condition of his heart and that it was only a matter of time before he needed a replacement anyways, and going with a donor heart would mean he would have to give up his mechanical arm as no modifications could be made with a donor one but a synthetic heart could provide more than enough energy to power his arm and be a lot less stressful on his body overall. With the new information, Zephyr was now really pushing for Ion to have his heart replaced, which Oliver hoped would make Ion finally accept it but Ion just said he would think about it. Oliver left the two for the night, returning home feeling a bit defeated in his fight for Ion's well being but knew he still had to keep pushing. \n\nOliver returned to the hospital the next day for his shift where when he got there, a nurse told him that Ion wanted to see him right away. Oliver went to Ion's room where he was transported to over the night as his condition improved and entered to see a serious look on Ion's face, with a relieved one of his mate's Zephyr's face. Ion had a hard time getting the words out but got there eventually, finally agreeing to Oliver's advice of having his heart replaced with a synthetic one. Oliver could see Ion did not take this decision lightly as he was shaking a bit but deep down, he could see Ion knew this was the best thing form him. Happy now that Ion was taking this very seriously, Oliver put a comforting hand on his shoulder, telling Ion he made the right call and they would get to work creating his synthetic heart right away, after taking some blood and tissues samples for his body. A synthetic organ was made specifically for the person it was going to be implanted into, taking about a week to make from specialized synthetic tissues and some mechanical components. Ion's surgery was scheduled for two weeks time, giving them enough time for his new heart to be crafted and to prepare Ion for his new life, a life where he could finally live normally which he could not since his serious injury he suffered at the age of 18. \n\nAs the days went on, Ion tried to relax but the idea of having the transplant was still filling him with unease, his friends stayed by his side the whole time which did put Ion's mind at ease a bit but he was still scared of what was to come. None of his friends except for Zephyr had scene Ion like this, shaky and studdery, overly nervous to the point it was making him sick. They felt bad for him, hating to see him this way but knew they had to be as supportive as possible, hoping that they could somehow put a smile on his face before he went under the knife. Try as they might, they couldn't break through, though they never gave up, hoping thins would get better as the day of his surgery quickly arrived.....\n~\n\nStory continues here: https://inkbunny.net/s/2148355","description_bbcode_parsed":"Art by Arrteen on FurAffinity

I am deciding to make this image a little prequel to a series of other images I have already in commission which will continue the story

~
Oliver was just about finished washing up when his next patient was wheeled into his operating room.
