3 of 5 of a little series I am drawing where Ion, due to his serous injury where he went into cardiac arrest and almost died years ago, left some permanent damage to the left side of his heart, causing irregular heart beat that required a pacemaker to make it function somewhat normally. Over time though the left side of his heart weakens causing both aortic and mitral regurgitation, to a point where he has to undergo open heart surgery to replace both.\n\nPart 2 - https://inkbunny.net/s/2103077\nPart 4 - https://inkbunny.net/s/2113605\n\n\n~\nLeaky Valves PT3 - Fragility of the Heart\n\nMeeka raised her hand from Ion's head as he was now in a medicated deep sleep. To make sure he was pain free, Meeka pricked him with a needle in different places, that if the anesthetic hadn't had it full effect, Ion would be wincing. With no reaction's from Ion, Meeka felt it was safe to begin the surgery, as Oliver started rubbing a disinfectant solution all over Ion's chest that gave off a strong smell. After seeing Ion's vitals were normal, Meeka motioned to Oliver to hand her the scalpel and she inserted it into Ion's chest, not too far below his neck, with blood oozing out around it. She then slid the scalpel down the length of Ion's chest, stopping just before his gut as blood freely oozed from the newly made incision. \n\nOliver began using the suction device to suck up the blood form the incision as Meeka sliced down Ion's chest over and over, continuing the spread apart his fur and skin. After a couple of passes, with the incision spread open decently, Oliver handed Meeka the electric-knife and she continued cutting Ion's tissues as the knife now cauterize the tiny blood vessels, helping to stop most of the bleeding. It took a bit of time but Meeka finally got to and exposed Ion's sternum. Taking a bottle of distilled water, Meeka sprayed some on Ion's sternum, cleaning it off a bit. Ion, having undergone open heart surgery before for other reasons, his sternum still had the closure plates screwed into it from before, so Oliver took the medical drill and unfastened the three butterfly looking plates so Ion's sternum was unobstructed. \n\nMeeka then grabbed a special saw and told Oliver to deflate Ion's lungs to make it safe to cut apart the sternum. Meeak took the saw to Ion's sternum, as you could hear the blade grinding against the bone, with Meeka carefully making sure not to push it too deep into Ion's chest where it could puncture the deflated lungs or worse, his heart. After Meeka finished cutting apart Ion's sternum, Oliver re-inflated Ion's lungs and Meeka waited a few minutes before continuing, giving Ion's body some time to re-oxygenate after his breathing was stopped for a few minutes with the deflated lungs. After the brief pause, Oliver pulled apart the two sides of Ion's sternum, exposing the muscular layer underneath that was pulsating a bit and Meeka started using the electric-knife to cut through. As the muscular layer was cut apart, you could start to see Ion's beating heart poking through until it was fully exposed. Meeak then uses a retractor to fully open Ion's chest, prying apart both sides as you cold hear Ions ribs pop a bit from the pressure exerted on them, though Meeka was careful not crack or break them while spreading open Ion's chest. \n\nFor Meeka it was always a site to see, exposing a patient's heart, as it always gave her that reality of having someone's life in her hands and she would make sure to protect it with all of her skill and ability. Meeka did a quick physical check of Ion's fair sized heart, holding it gently, feeling it pulsate against her hands. When she felt all was good, Meeka began to isolate Ion's heart in his circulatory system, bypassing the blood around it so she could safely open it up and replace the two valves. She grafted special tubes to Ion's aorta, inferior vena cava and superior vena cava, back filling them with sterile water to make sure no air got into the system. The tubes were connected to a special machine that would become Ion's heart and lungs while his heart would be stopped to replace the valves. \n\nOnce Meeka made sure everything was good and tight, she then took a syringe with special liquid and injected it into Ion's heart. Ion's heart immediately slowed down and then started vibrating as the ECG monitor showed his vitals flat line with the loud long beep. Oliver quickly turned on the bypass machine, restoring blood flow through Ion's body as the ECG stopped making its sound, showing Ion was on pump and blood was flowing through his body. Ion's heart was still vibrating and to make it stop fully, Meeka dumped ice water on top of it, preventing it from beating and cooling it down to protect it from damage as blood was not flowing through it at this time. \n\nMeeka then turned Ion's heart, providing clear access to the left side and made an incision into the left chamber with the scalpel. Some remaining blood squirted out, splashing a bit on Meeka, Oliver and Ion's face. Oliver then sucked out the rest of it, fully cleaning out the chamber as Meeka isolated the mitral valve and stated cutting out the damaged leaflets. Using a special measuring tool, she measure the diameter of where the valve was and asked Oliver for the appropriate sized new valve that they were going to insert in the old ones place. Meeka decided to put in a synthetic tissue valve as a mechanical one would cause Ions to have to go on blood thinners, and with him still wanting to do his hunter work, that could be dangerous is Ion got an injury, as thinner blood would bleed out faster. The only drawback was that the new valve would only last ten years or so, making Ion have to have this surgery again at that time to replace the valves again but this was safer for what he does.\n\nAs Oliver prepared the new valve, Meeka began running thick sutures around the circumference of where the valve would be placed so that the new valve could be locked tightly in place and be able to take the full force of a beating heart. With the sutures on the heart in place and the valve fully prepared, the other end of the sutures were thread into the new valve and it was lowered into position. Meeka and Oliver tightly tied the suture ends, fully locking the valve into place. After pulling on it a bit to test it's strength and seeing that it wouldn't come loose, Meeka turned her attention to the other side of the chamber where the aortic valve was. Looking the the heart stop time, seeing it had only been about 40 minutes or so that Ion's heart was stopped, she was making good time. Meeka then cut out the leaflets of the aortic valve and repeated the same process as she did with the mitral valve. \n\nWith Ion's new aortic valve tightly in place, Meeka then started to close the incision into Ion's heart, overlapping the tissues quite a bit and using the same thicker sutures to tightly close the incision so it could take the full force of the beating heart. Meeka then used a internal defibrillator to restart the beating of Ion's heart and when it was pounding correctly, she restored the blood flow to it. Once the bypass machine was empty of Ion's blood, Meeka then removed the tube grafts which caused a bit of blood to squirt out each time, but she tightly stitching closed the mini incisions in Ion's blood vessels, recreating the air tight seal. With Ion now off the bypass machine and his heart pumping his blood through his body again, Meeka use a ultrasound on his heart to make sure the new valves were working smoothly. After about a half an hour of using the ultrasound, Meeka didn't notice anything out of place and continued with closing up Ion's chest. She stitched closed the muscular layer before removing the retractor and reattaching the clamps to Ion's sternum, closing it as well. Meek then stitched closed the layers of Ion's skin and finished closing his fur with surgical staples. \n\nAfter Ion was all closed up, Oliver washed as much blood off Ion as he could as Meeka removed his breathing tube and placed an oxygen mask on him instead. Meeka and Oliver then gently placed Ion on a gurney and wheeled him out to his recovery room where a welcome surprise would await him when he awoke. \n~","description_bbcode_parsed":"<span style='word-wrap: break-word;'>Part 3 of 5 of a little series I am drawing where Ion, due to his serous injury where he went into cardiac arrest and almost died years ago, left some permanent damage to the left side of his heart, causing irregular heart beat that required a pacemaker to make it function somewhat normally.
