  "description": "Sex is bimodal for most animals, but the majority will fall into either the male or female category. This makes a lot of sense if you understand how evolution works. After all, life more than likely started out as single celled organisms that would have reproduced asexually. At some point \"male\" and \"female\" have evolved out of this but just like with any vestigial organ or bone, occasionally an animal with a bimodal sex model will be born between those two sexes; this is considered intersex.\n\nI wanted to draw an intersex animal and chose a cat. Calico cats are usually female but occasionally will be born male, something like one out of 3,000 I think. Though outwardly male (having a fully formed penis and balls), genetically they are intersex with XXY chromosomes. I figured because of this a calico would be good for drawing an intersex creature.\n\nOn another note, keep in mind intersex does not mean hermaphrodite. A hermaphrodite is an animal that has both fully functional set of genitalia.
