Pencil...
The featured pencil is a long-ferruled specimen from the early 20th century. It's fairly unique for most pencils of its time in that it has a square barrel (an enlarged image of the pencil barrel is shown in the lower-right of the comic).
Square-barrel pencils are known as '*boxy' pencils---I've never before seen such an early example of a boxy pencil as this.
