They are wax sticks bound in paper. The paper has a string attached that one pulls to 'sharpen' the pencil, hence 'self-sharpening'.\nThe china marker gets its name from one of its intended purposes: to write on china/porcelain, as well as glass and other tricky surfaces.\n\nThis specimen is from Blaisdell Pencil Co, and has a patent date stamped on it.\nIt's very hard to read, but I interpret it as,\n\n\"151 Blaisdell Pencil Co. Pat. 10.27.*1891; 11.19.1895\"\n\n*looks like '1891' to me, though it should be '1893' (more on this later).\n\nMine appears to be unused.
