BtrfyFx (yes, that's his name) is back, playing about with his insect friends. :3\n\nIt's a scritch-scratch drawing, arguably lazier than some of my Quickies, but it's cute, and someone (or sometwo or -three or -ten) will fave it. ^_^\n\nEven so, I wonder who or what this drawing is for. I mean, I've said before that I make art for my watchers, and that's true: I've drawn just about everything I'd ever want to draw for myself, hence most everything I draw now is for the internet.\n\nWho are my watchers? Furries, mostly. I don't have access to specifics, but many who I talk with (and to, and at, respectively) are roughly my age, with some exceptions (I don't make it a habit to exchange non-public messages with 'kids', albeit I do know a few who watch me).\n\nBtrfyFx is appealing to furries? ...I guess so---I mean, I don't foresee Dragoneer taking this down! XD\n\nBtrfyFx is a fox; he's a cartoon drawn in an 'old-skool' style furries my age grew up with via TV, comics, etc. The art (while rough) is childlike and has an 'achievable' look to those who are afraid of drawing (yes, I've been told this ...and was meant as a compliment ...anyway).\n\nPoint is, most furries would at least like some aspects of this scribble, even if just for the sake of the paws, etc.\n\nBut isn't it incidental, that furries would like a drawing of a cartoon fox? ...Yes. I mean, this drawing has no 'intent' behind it; it's not specifically 'for' anyone; there's no 'ends' I'm trying to achieve with this drawing.\n\nKids might like BtrfyFx, too (and most kids aren't furry)---Fx is cute, looks like a character one could see on TV (via VHS lol), and is generally appealing as an animal character. Yet, BtrfyFx isn't 'for' kids (and neither are the sites I upload to, but that's notwithstanding).\n\nWhat am I getting at here?\n\nWell, as some of you know, there's been a big ado lately about what the FTC (Federal Trade Commission) considers as 'for kids' or 'not for kids' as regards video content on YouTube, esp. as regards a video's or channel's compliance with the FTC's COPPA (Childrens Online Privacy Protection Act) laws.\n\nHow does the above affect me and what has it do do with BtrfyFx?\n\nAs some of you know, I have a YT channel. As fewer of you know, I made a video about my artwork in which I showcased most of my ACO drawings. I marked it as 'not for kids', and deleted it a week or so later (before the COPPA laws would take effect on YT).\n\nSo, what if I wanted to reupload that video or (better) make a new one on the matter of my drawings; would the video be 'for' kids or 'not for' kids?\n\nDear Lord, there would be so many variables to consider there... I mean, the determining factors would extend past the artwork. My language, idiolect, presentation, etc., would be among the relevancies (and, yes, there's also the art itself).\n\nFirst, who am I? I'm a single, childless adult man drawing cartoon foxes (no judgies!). I count myself as a furry (not merely a 'furry fan', but a member of the community---I have OCs I identify with, and I make art; I contribute to the community, even if I have no fursuit).\n\nWhat is furry? It's a penchant; a fetish. That said, furry art needn't be sexual (the majority of mine isn't), but furry is what it is. Even if one disagrees with me on this, the human population doesn't in a general sense (either rightly or wrongly).\n\nBut this doesn't resolve the problem as much of that which appeals to furries also appeals to (and arguably is intended to appeal to) children. The difference, really, is how an individual responds/reacts to what they see on, say, a television screen (a child and a furry may respond very differently to the 'Kaa' scene from Disney's 1967 version of 'The Jungle Book', for example). ^_^\n\nSay, in my hypothetical video, I introduce my art as 'appealing to furries'. This wouldn't be incorrect or dishonest in any way, yet my art isn't objectively 'furry'---much of it is child friendly, even if incidentally so.\nEither way, I'd be expected to define my video as one or the other: for kids, or not (and there are consequences for getting it wrong).\n\nDigressing, perhaps, but I find applying COPPA laws to YT ridiculous. For one thing, YT isn't Hollywood, neither does YT require its content creators to be large, corporate entities.\nIn fact, most who upload videos to YT do so in much the same way as a cartooner uploads their scribbles to FurAffinity/DeviantArt: you make it, then click 'Upload'. Done!\n\nThe same couldn't be said if I, say, tried to pitch BtrfyFx to a major comics syndicate, or if one pitched their animated-cartoon idea to Nickelodeon.\n\nThe difference is this: Say one has an idea for an educational, cartoon series for PBS. All right... first, one would need connections to even get one's ideas seen or heard.\nOvercoming that, one's ideas must then meet the approval of various focus groups, educators/advisors, shareholders, lawyers, etc., before the idea could then be turned upside down and inside and out by editors, screeners, marketing executives, etc., before anything gets moving (even then, there aren't any promises).\nThe end result would be a product customized to appeal to a specific demographic, and tailored to achieve a desired ends (ie, to generate money, earn awards, etc).\n\nA YTer? ...buys a camera from a Target store, points it at something/oneself, yammers for ten minutes or so, then self-approves by clicking 'Upload'. Done!\nThe goal (often) being pageviews, or (if the YT is 'successful') to earn ad revenue (through which one person's click is as good as another's).\n\nMajor difference there.\n\nFor example, one never has to worry about a character in (say) 'Paw Patrol' dropping an F-bomb, whereas there's nothing preventing a YTer from doing so at any point in their video (regardless of the video's subject).\n\nThis is why I say YT videos aren't 'for' anyone, except perhaps in some nominal or imagined sense.\nSame applies to my gallery and artwork---I may draw (say) a cartoon bunny, but its description may include my ramblings about religion, depression, and/or my drinking habits. The next upload might have the cutest, most charming *story attached, but the art would show a naked 'cupid' flirting with Pikachu (all in the same gallery)!\n\n*I wish I were joking. More than once, I've been unironically told I should write childrens' stories ...every instance of which has been in response to one of my Timmy cartoons. :P\n\n...Anyway.\n\nSo... BtrfyFx... is he 'for kids'? We may never know (but you're certainly free to enjoy him, age notwithstanding)! :3","description_bbcode_parsed":"<span style='word-wrap: break-word;'>Aw!
